The word "Icon" is a Greek word and translates as "image". For the icon to have the power of guidance, defense, etc. it must be sanctified with the prayer of the Orthodox priest. There are also wizard icons with charms on them. The icon must be purchased only from the monastery or church and not be recieved as gift. The word "grace" translates as "the right given by Jesus Christ to priests to offer prayers of release, baptism, communion, etc.", grace can only have the priest and not a icon or anyone else.

First of all, Catholic priests have apostolic sucession, so are also ministers of grace. (In fact, this channel is a done by both Eastern Catholics and Eastern Orthodox) Second of all, most of what you said isn't even Orthodox. I am guessing you are a member of True Orthodoxy™. Either that, or ROCOR.

Can we just find the appropriate wood in art stores all ready for iconographers these days? Are there places to order from?

Definitely following. I’m curious if we can contact lumber yards to source wood. We may need to cut our own boards; something I will be doing most likely.

Hello, can I coat with rabbit skin glue and gypsum directly on birch plywood and paint with egg tempera without linen, or cloth, or other else? I am waiting for answering, thank you very much.

I have never made an icon, but use birch plywood for my portrait paintings. I first coat it 2x with oil based Kilz. Then add a layer of Liquitex gesso and sand that with 300 and then 600 sandpaper followed by "sanding" with 0000 steel wool. Perfect.

The hieromonk mentions redwood as a possible wood for icons. Is western red cedar acceptable? It is more stable than fir or pine, but does anyone have experience with this wood?
