The icon-painting studio of St. Elisabeth Convent was established in 1999.In the fifteen years of its existence, the icon-painting studio has painted icons for churches throughout the world. The icon-painters follow in the footsteps of Byzantine and Russian artists of the XII - XV centuries and use ancient icon painting techniques.
I can't imagine a more gratifying profession.
I'm also writing icons, its something incomprehensible in it. I think it is spiritual development. I would say that process of making icons, teaches me humility and mercy from God.
I also have written an icon, great effort, boundless spiritual rewards in doing so. It surprises me though to hear them discuss “ painting” an icon, you are the first person to express it as “writing” an icon, exactly as I was taught. We don’t paint, we write, when creating the icon.
When I was Chrismated last month, my godmother ordered me an icon of my Saint from this studio. It is very special to me. Thank you for your wonderful work.

These nuns and lay sisters are absolutely oozing with God-blessed talents and charisms. I love how serious they are about preparing the wood in the traditional way. These images are meant to last.
I used to love drawing and painting up until high school, it’s been about 8 years since I’ve done any sketches or art but seeing this(after coming to orthodoxy) really gives me the desire to learn to write icons

It is a way to connect with God and His mother and His angels and His saints, and a visual reminder of them all. So long as you are not worshipping the icon itself, but rather, what the icon represents, there is no problem. Have a blessed day.

How fascinating that a painting can transcend a object of art and become a spiritual icon.
I’m an atheist but these works are nonetheless breathtakingly beautiful and I’m greatful to those who have preserved this cultural tradition.

it is really creating a miracle of life,do you also use birch or cedar wood for painting the Icon,here in Holland I always check out the large containers for waste,few weeks I discover a wooden oak tree plank of 3 meters long and 5 cm thick and I mold them wich comes in practical and spirituall and use it for decorating the home I rent, wood is like gold but most people here in the west do not always realize it's importance,burned two candles for you all so you will enjoy a blessed Icon spiritual painting day and as I was singing the jesus prayer on the way home,the birds were happy singing along,I love the early mornings now and when I was a child but we all are children of God,only now in one mature body universal

Very nice... Keep up the good work... God bless you all... Jesus is now in sorrow because His sacrament of Eucharist is not given to the people He really loves (almost every where in the world) . The Church authorities make so many rules that His people cannot freely go to Church. A large number of His people, young and old, in the covid era leave Him behind and engage in worldy things, even on Sunday, a day that should be devoted for our Lord. We need to pray everyday and dedicate our time for Him, because He really loves us.

Definition of "graven image" : sculpture or image of an idol or god that is venerated/worshipped/used as an object of worship
A graven image is only something which is worshipped. In the Old Testament, we find God's command to Moses in the construction of cherubim on the Ark of the Covenant, additionally, there were also paintings of angels inside Solomon's temple, neither of these can be considered idols or graven images as they were constructed directly at God's command, or by one close to God such as Solomon, despite the fact that in the commandments, God states: "Thou shalt not make to thyself a graven thing, nor the likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or in the earth beneath, nor of those things that are in the waters under the earth. 5 Thou shalt not adore them, nor serve them: I am the Lord thy God, mighty, jealous, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me:" read in context, this passage conveys that God only passes ill judgment on those who "adore"- which is taken to mean worship: Greek: λατρεύσῃς - Worship, and also those who "hate" him Neither of these can those who venerate icons be accused of. In the same way, Icons and statues are not created for the purpose of worship, and so they are not graven images. Veneration of icons, statues, relics and other sacred objects is a permissible act and is encouraged for one's spiritual life in the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches.

Are you Catholic or Orthodox by any chance? Both accept 1 Maccabees as a canonical book of the Old Testament, and both make icons and images.

Thank you, but I have such a question, can I cover it on a tree and paint it with an egg tempera directly on the tree? Or should I put a blank (canvas) and glue it on the tree? Then paint on a blank (canvas) which is stuck to a tree? I am waiting for an answer, thanks
you should (and traditionally it is) paint it directly on the prepared wood surface, at most maybe some kind of a gesso might help.
I would travel there and spend however long it takes to learn the whole process. Are there those who teach in English?

With love & respect, I must lament the use of "painting" an icon whereas in all the ages, icons have been "written." This is the root meaning of iconography ‐‐ icon writing. The icon is theology in color. Please correct the English voice over. 😢
I’m afraid you are making a mountain out of a molehill.
The word for paint and write are practically the same in Greek. And the 2 top iconographers (one being Dr. George Kordis) both say paint instead of write.
It’s as Paul says in Titus 3:9 “But avoid foolish disputes, genealogies, contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and useless.”
When you create an Icon you draw it and than you paint it and you also write on it so it’s all correct at some stage. Tools are used to point us toward God and the Saints.
It’s like saying sing or chant or intone, it’s all the same, we don’t need to get legalistic and shed tears and correct people about it. It’s not like it’s heresy or something.
