Developing an idea from sketches to finished works

- Previously, I made a video about developing ideas in sketchbooks. Now I’m sharing the whole process - from initial sketchbook play to final finished pieces. In this video, I share how I develop an idea and then use those initial ideas as a jumping off point for making paintings. This isn’t about enlarging sketchbook pieces - it’s about taking those initial ideas and developing them further on canvas or board.

I LOVE all the books, but especially the Black and White!!
Thank you
Your sketchbooks are so free and playful😍
Glad you enjoyed seeing them!
The idea of subconscious incubation through the mediation of sketchbook is a wonderful idea. Instead of copying from the textbook you suggest letting the idea get assimilated and transformed into a new entity and let that take birth on the canvas. This idea is lovely. It works!!! Thank you Louise.

Thanks so much for watching!
I have never seen an accordion style sketchbook before, that is the most amazing thing!!
Your sketchbooks are Eye-Popping! You are flipping through the first two and all I can say is Wow, lady Louise, you have a great style. I am sure you are going to inform my future work. I hope I can put a stamp on that does you justice.
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for all of your information you share. It is so helpful watching your videos. I love your style so much. Every single piece, down to your sketchbooks.
Your sketchbooks are perfection! They have everything I ever want to achieve. I love your paintings but those scetchbooks topped it all 💙💙💙
Your best clip ever! Those sketches were amazing. Every single page should be on a huge canvas. Can’t wait to see you paint the open space ones you were talking about. Totally agree with you.
Huge fan from Sunny LA!
Thank you so much!

Hi from an ex-Art teacher in Australia. This was an amazing process video, your work is really exciting. Thank you for sharing. I have reached a stage in my life that I am able to devote time to developing my work and thanks to my Husband and a renovation I now have my own art room!!! I feel like I have found a teacher/mentor in you. Message from you is to be brave and experiment. Loved your description about experiencing lockdown. Thanks again.

Your sketchbooks are fabulous and the paintings just beautiful! I’m filled with excitement and hope and I can’t wait to get started in your course as well. You and Alice have been my motivators through this whole pandemic. GREAT BIG THANKS!!
Thank you so much!
You have a wonderful way of putting your feelings out very clearly by explaining your methods in your paintings and videos. Thank you for taking time to help the rest of us.
Thank you so much!
Love those sketch books! The third & fourth one... love it💕
Well done! I've enjoyed watching you create this series, and showing us how trusting the process and having the patience to see it through can result in developing a great body of work. Looking forward to the course, I've got a big box of collage material waiting.
Hi Kim, we won't be doing much collage on the course but hopefully I will set you free to use it all up in your own way xx
Oh! Louise these are wonderful and your commentary is so informative and insightful. Thank you for sharing your processes and then your final commentary. I love your works and have followed your journey for about three years now, even before you took Nicholas' course. You have come along way baby❣❣❣😀💗

Thanks Louise, I really enjoy watching your video on patternicity. I can just feel the process you are going thru and from all of those sketch books came ideas and then your painting on board came alive. Soooo very inspiring. Can't wait for June 3rd.

I've found you fairly recently. I love the things you say about art, developing it, etc. I've never understood abstract painting, but have been enjoying some of what I've seen here. However, I really love this series. Thanks for the work you do. I'll keep watching.
Love the combination of blues, blacks & whites with structured pattern and loose circles.
Love this, Louise. The sketchbooks, themselves, are beautiful works of art. Love the palette.

Love how you describe sketchbook use! I had thought it was about copying from the sketchbook to the painting. Your description of your method freed me. I'm new at this - lol! Sorry I missed the course (pouts).
I am glad this helped!
I am so glad I found your channel on CZcams. I have been struggling to find a way to express what I feel and just continued to churn out pretty things that sell since I live in the back of beyond and do not have access to tutors. I eagerly look forward to your course next month and anything on offer after that. Your videos are so packed full of knowledge, visual examples, discussion, and advice -- thank you.
You are so welcome! I know I can help :)

I love this video so much! Thank you!!!
I'm so glad!
Enjoying immensely!
I am so pleased :)
Seriously incredible!!!
Aww thank you Cindi!
Great video - thank you. I finally managed to track down a concertina sketchbook in a shop (I live in Aotearoa New Zealand). It cost an arm and a leg, as they do on-line, so I am making my own. I'm really enjoying experimenting with them, and am making them as presents for friends too.
Have fun!
Fantastic video. Thank you.
Thank you for watching!
I just love the colour palette
thank you x
Dear Louise, inspired by one of your earlier videos, I signed up for Karen’s six week concertina workshop, we just started on Monday. It is awesome! And I signed up for your free week in June as well, it’s going to be a busy June! 😄 Thank you for sharing your sketchbooks, so loved seeing them.
Wonderful!
I am a new fan. Love your Art painting!
Thank you so much 😀
Beautiful collages.
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks for this video! Always great content👍
My pleasure!
Beautiful work! Thanks so much for sharing. See you on June 3rd.
Can't wait!
Just brilliant thank youdomuch
You are welcome :)
Awesome work in my opinion abstract art is all about contrast, that’s what I found out in my art creating the more contrast the more impact the artwork makes.
Yes to an extent I agree - but you also need balance and harmony x
Amazing thank you 🙏
You’re welcome 😊
Love your process
Oops runaway post. The most amazing for me is your open sharing of the process
I hope it helps x
Ow I’m so interested at how successful I can hopefully can improve and enjoy my art from Cyprus 🧿Mary🖤
good to 'meet' you
That's a very helpful video - wonderful to see your process summed up like this. Thank you for your generosity - looking forward to the free class! (and unschooling after CVP ;) ) And I just ordered 2 of those sketchbooks from Jackson's - why don't we have them in the US??
Glad it was helpful!
Really liked this. Where do you get the accordion sketchbooks? Thanks for sharing. ❤️
Thank you Louise for sharing your wonderful inspirational work. Where can I get stencils with large numbers & lettering in the UK. Looking forward to your course.
I just search on eBay
Thanks for this!
My pleasure!
Hi Louise your sketchbooks are just wonderful, love them! have you ever tried baby powder to avoid the sides from sticking? Try it, they also get a nice smell 😉
Thanks for the tip!
Danke !
I would like to apply your process and approach to art to a more representational result. For example an abstracted landscape or figure. I hope you will have some guidance towards taking that last step in this direction. I’m looking forward to focusing on using all of the many workshops and lessons to develop my own artistic expression. Thanks in advance for your help.
Amazing 🥰
Thanks 🤗
I have tried a bit of baking soda lightly dusted over art journal pages. It has kept my pages from "sticking"
to each other. Love your enthusiasm.
good tip!
Hi Louise, love the sketchbooks I'll be trying this myself but have you used gesso before adding paint? also do you use both sides of the paper?
Really like the flow & freedom you have in the text books. What do you fix the art with ? 👩🏼🎨
I seal with gloss medium
Love all of those journals. Tons of material for paintings. Where did you find the accordion journals?
They are seawhite journals
Hi Louise, thanks for this! Super helpful! I am wondering how long this series took from the sketchbook from the class to the finished series. I often find that I start work/ideas in sketches and idea form and then panic because I don't know how to allow them space to grow and become what they really want to be. I'd be interested in if there's a gap between sketchbooks and then a gap between them and the panels... and how long each of those gaps were. Cant wait for the course in June!
I'm sure it's different for everyone - for me this series happened quite quickly (a few months). My last series took two years!
Love your work and your love to share WITH us your techniques……I missed your june course😪, is here something recordéd or any other course?…. Thanks a lot!!!
I am MONICA From mexico.
Hi Monica, I may offer the course again in the future. Stay tuned to my newsletters to find out when. You can sign up here: www.louisefletcherart.com/contact
I also have an ongoing monthly membership site. You can learn more about that here and sign up for a free trial! www.louisefletcherart.com/art-tribe
Loved the sketchbook work! Also, the piano music....could you share what it was?
Yes of course - it's music that comes with iMovie x
Love the new hairstyle!
thanks! lockdown hair :)
Love your abstract art.
Quick question, how do you stick paper?, is it PVA glue or glue stick?.
Thanks.
Keep shinning your beautiful art light ❤ 10:21
Very beautiful and inspiring sketchbooks! I really enjoy seeing them and the late paintings. Are the Seawhite Concertina sketchbooks A5? I think I heard you mention the size but now can't find that reference. Thanks :-)
I have no idea - I have different sizes
@@ThisPaintingLife, thanks. I'm guessing the one's you show here are A5 based on the size of your hand.
Great video! I have a question about the text you using in the sketchbooks. I know you use it in a way that it is less visible but do you think about what kind of text? For example some words of a poem, or some words from an article that speaks to you? Thanks Louise!
I tend to choose the text for the look of it rather than for the meaning (although not always)
This was a great demo on your process with sketchbooks. I have been wondering about how painting in a concertina sketchbook works as the images look as if the entire book was done at the same time. Meaning that there doesn’t seem to be a break from one double page spread to the next. Is that the point of using this type of sketchbook?
Yes it just means you can keep flowing over the pages if you want to and continuing the same story in different ways
Did you paint directly in the journal or glue pictures in the book after painting?
If you are interested, Try a light dusting of corn starch for the sticky pages.
thanks for the tip!
Just ordered these sketchbooks! I’m trying to move away from subconsciously ‘copying’ the artists who inspire me....yourself, Karen Hale, Caroline ashwood, Michael Lang....and more! All fabulous artists with different styles. I’m hoping that by working in sketchbooks I can develop my own style whilst drawing on what I’ve learned from watching hundreds of videos....is this likely to work?! I really enjoy your videos...I’m in Yorkshire too ☺️
Please take my free course - I will show you how to start tapping in to your own creativity rather than following others x
Hello Jackie, could you tell me the sketchbook name cause I did not understand. I. Speak more French than English 😀. So I could order it too for the course! 🙏
@@johannerousseau7800 hi, it’s called the seawhite concertina sketchbook, I got it from Amazon 😊
@@jackielloyd5151 oh thank U very much....I understood sea white but the rest was Chinese to me 😄😄😄 🙏
I love this way of creating & learning. What ink are you using ? 😊
just acrylic inks
@@ThisPaintingLife I have some v small bottles of acrylic ink & would like to find larger sizes ? I’m so looking forward to the weeks course & really hoping to join the 10 week course. I have lost my mojo & your way of talking & painting really inspires me. I live in Devon. 😊
Where do you buy the note books? Or do you make he concertinos yourself?
It seems the sketch books are the living of life experiences/ then the paintings are the telling of that story of experiences in a life.
I love these - there's something a bit punk about the ripped up text and collage - so textural.
Thank you!
You can rub wax over the pages and they won't stick together. I do that in my sketchbooks. Hope that helps.
I thought of that but I like to go back in and do more painting so I've held off
@@ThisPaintingLife That makes sense! :)
@@montanaphoto I was just going to suggest that Donna!
@@gailwhitter3293 We're full of advice, lol! lol!
Could you possibly elaborate some day here, on the value of creating abstract art? It seems my friends and acquaintances Pooh-Pooh abstract art as “A waste of effort.” Some of us across the pond here could use some encouragement!
I will keep it in mind for a future video - but caring what others think is the real catch 22 - you have to get to a place where it just doesn't matter xx
Hi Louise can you please give the name of the Constantina sketchbook? I can only find one from seawhite in a4 size but I'm in holland and postage too pricey - thanks!
How did you put the sketch book pages together like that, not like a book but accordion?
It's a Seawhite sketchbook x
