Developing an idea from sketches to finished works

  • Previously, I made a video about developing ideas in sketchbooks. Now I’m sharing the whole process - from initial sketchbook play to final finished pieces. In this video, I share how I develop an idea and then use those initial ideas as a jumping off point for making paintings. This isn’t about enlarging sketchbook pieces - it’s about taking those initial ideas and developing them further on canvas or board.

The idea of subconscious incubation through the mediation of sketchbook is a wonderful idea. Instead of copying from the textbook you suggest letting the idea get assimilated and transformed into a new entity and let that take birth on the canvas. This idea is lovely. It works!!! Thank you Louise.

I often find that I start work/ideas in sketches and idea form and then panic because I don't know how to allow them space to grow and become what they really want to be. This was a great demo on your process with sketchbooks. I have been wondering about how painting in a concertina sketchbook works as the images look as if the entire book was done at the same time. Meaning that there doesn’t seem to be a break from one double page spread to the next. Is that the point of using this type of sketchbook?
