Mikey Gets A Little Angry with Chap in GD70CAO

  • Some drivers simply don't want to share the road. As always, the driver tries to deflect from his aggressive and intentional driving to blame the cyclist. This driver can't understand that he's no faster than a cyclist, and that it would be much better and easier to just relax instead of trying to pass at every opportunity. If you're wondering why I'm out and well away from parked cars, it's because of the danger of being doored by someone carelessly throwing open a car door.

Honestly there's not much to it, with Met Police you report online through their website under report a traffic incident. Fill in the details, provide a statement explaining what happened and upload the video (they ask for 1 min either side of incident but that's not a strict requirement, I generally provide 40 seconds either side). Usually within a couple of days, but could be longer, you'll be told if a NIP is sent. If you haven't heard from them after two weeks then no action is being taken. You'll only hear more from them if it goes to court.

Car as a weapon is a severe red line. Swerving at you is bloody dangerous and then having the temerity to use you "weaving" as an excuse for his insane driving. Then using his phone behind the wheel? Motorcycling friends often tell me about drivers being pissed about them 'weaving', not appreciating that small factors - spotting a person parked about to open a door, a hole in the road that is big to a cyclist's wheel, or even just a gust of wind can cause movement. All power to you Mikey.

I've had the accusation of "swerving all over the road" before from drivers who have tried to "teach me a lesson". They don't realise that a two wheeler is allowed to occupy whatever position is safe to do so within a single lane. A two wheeler also handles very differently from a car which they also don't understand. They can't go in perfectly straight lines the same way that 4 wheelers can.

We did not have the sort of body worn camera that you can use now so I did rather overstep the mark a few times, one of my favourites was to strike down hard on the left hand door mirror of any car that came close enough!, no more than one foot away, the result was usually that the mirror broke off and fell in the road!. I can offer no excuse or justification for this and I did not do it often, just that such things happened so often that the frustration boiled over!.
    Cheers, Richard.

I really don’t understand people like this. Even if I thought a cyclist was being an idiot I’d still make sure to keep as far away from them as possible. Why risk injuring or even killing someone? Even if the cyclist is in the wrong I’d prefer not to have that on my conscience!

Mikey, you did nothing wrong there whatsoever! The driver was ignorant and a self absorbed idiot. This has happenned to me in exactly the same way and I also lost my temper in the same way. Afterall, it is your safety and life that has been threatenned. I hope he gets hauled in to complete a training course for what he did.

Sadly Id not be surprised if the idiot driver had already left the country and gone back to Beijing.
I once reported a chinese national for driving into me - well, it was his girlfriend / wife who wasnt insured to drive. They drove away and attempted to swap over drivers before returning to the scene but were followed by another motorist who acted as a witness.
Cops were talking about prosecuting for perverting the course of justice - case was dropped because they both cleared off back to China.

Your caption, "Haven't you realised that you aren't any faster than me?" entirely overlooks the the fact that so many people switch off critical thinking when they climb into their cars. They become automatons, following the same routes, with the same cars for company, and captured by the same mental distractions day after day after tedious day.

It should be drummed into drivers when they first learn to drive:
      - You don't have a right not to be held up.
      - Choosing to use a car is choosing to accept the risk of being held up.
      - You are not in traffic. You ARE traffic.

  • @delbified

It's the same in Australia. Some drivers, if they see a gap in front of you, they feel compelled to overtake and fill it. Even if you're about to overtake the queue in front of you on your bike. Car brain.
