- Picture This 2: Wineskins - Mark 2
Jesus, the master teacher, knew better than anyone that a picture is worth a thousand words. That’s why his teaching is loaded with imagery. As he taught, he filled his listeners’ minds with vivid pictures of fields ripe for harvest, buried treasure, slowly germinating mustard seeds, banquet halls, and more.
Join us as we unfold the deeper meaning behind some of Jesus’ most famous object lessons. By going back in time to understand what these pictures would have meant to Jesus’ first century Jewish audience, we will bring their timeless meaning forward into the present.
In part two, we explore the image of a bursting wineskin.
I was literally only looking into wine skins and what they were. Cause I was reading this passage over and over! I clicked on this only expecting to learn about the wine skin. And here you are breaking that passage down. Praise God!!! I loved this message it helped so much

Thank you so very much. I just started a study of Matthew and was having difficulty understanding this example from Jesus. This has really helped clear it up. Keep up the good work.
A new covenant...

But no man having tasted old wine desire new, for he saith the old is better- if you are gonna exegete, you need to exegete the entire passage.......
Luke 5:37-38 was the last passage in the KJV that said wineskins, not bottles. It too has changed to wine bottles now. I took a photo of the page when it said wineskins, and I wondered if that photo would change if the book did. But the photo still shows wineskins. It also has a capital H for Him (Jesus) which is now lower case.
I'm trying to find the source of your Israeli wineskin story. Will you please provide where you got the information from? Thanks so much!
Einstein touched on this:
_We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them._
_Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results._
Faith can be closely likened to using scientific axioms. You assume what is written to be true, and then ask, "how is it true?" The answer that comes, if you are in the flesh you might say is from your imagination, but if you are in spirit, you know from Whom the answer has been given, and how it was given to you to have.
You can know the truth if the answer provided advocates Christ's teachings.
You can know the truth if the answer provided opposes your old thinking.
Luke 5:39 _And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, ‘The old is better.’”_
John 8:32 _Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free._
John 14:6 _Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me._
John 17:17 _Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth._
This is the new wine.
How do we get new wineskins?
John 3:3-8, 3:11-12 _Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!” Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” ... Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things?
We must stop believing we are flesh, and start believing we are spirit. This is repentance. It's not a one-time fix, but an ongoing process. There is much to repent from.
Why spirit?
John 4:24 _God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth._
John 4:23 _Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks._
Through spirit, we find the distinction between double-mindedness (Psalm 119:113, James 1:6-8) and single-mindedness, and that God is single-minded because God is One. (Deuteronomy 6:4, Galatians 3:20)
What is single-mindedness?
Flesh is created of earth, flesh gives birth to flesh, flesh returns to the earth.
Spirit comes from spirit, spirit gives birth to spirit, spirit returns to spirit.
A true worshiper always worships. (John 4:23-24)
A true Savior always saves.
A true Believer always believes.
John 10:28 _I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one._
Being one in mind with the mind of the Spirit (Romans 8:27), one in spirit with the spirit of the Spirit (Genesis 1:2, John 4:24), one in will with the will of the Spirit (Matthew 26:41)
Then you will find idolatry is the source of all addictions. We are to be addicted to the Word of God, Jesus Christ, in spirit and in truth, seeing all creations as creations, and grateful to the Creator for His creations that help us to fulfill His Will on earth.
John 3:30 _He must become more important while I become less important._
Matthew 23:12 & Luke 14:11 _For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted._
Then, you will find that all good things done on earth are God's Will whether we accept all things done as His Will as good or not. For God alone is good, and does all things. (Mark 10:18, Ecclesiastes 7:13, Isaiah 45:3)
Straighten out fidelity:
Obedience obeys, disobedience disobeys
Fidelity: Active obedience to obedience results in passive disobedience to disobedience
Infidelity: Active obedience to disobedience results in passive disobedience to obedience
If we obey our parents, though they do not do as they say, we will find later in life we are able to obey God's command.
If we disobey our parents, though they do not do as they say, we are in obedience with their disobedience, we will find later in life we are unable to obey God's command.
Seek the truth. It's been there all along. The truth is within you. Set free the truth so that you may be free.
Peace be with you. Amen.
They used to soak old wine skins in water to make the skin elastic again. Baptizing them to renew.
Has anybody noticed that the word wineskins is now bottles in the KJV?
The old man of sin is the old wineskin Gods Spirit is the is the new wine. The old man can’t contain the new wine or”Spirit “for they are contrary one to another, for Gods Spirit is only given to the obedient. But the new wine can be contained in the new man where both are preserved, thus the parable
Wouldn’t it just be the new and Old Testament
But what does any of this have to do with the pharisees question about fasting?
Hey Mysteroo, thanks for the question. Jesus’ response to the Pharisees does not only provide a quick answer to their immediate question about fasting, but also gives a subtle critique of what is *behind* their question. The Pharisees' question reveals that they are hyper-focused on religious rigor and human tradition, to such a degree that they are missing the much greater thing that God is doing among them at that moment.
So Jesus’ answer builds from a direct metaphor to explain why his disciples aren’t fasting at that time, to a set of metaphors that critique the Pharisee’s broader concerns. It is those metaphors that this message is primarily concerned with.
Thanks again for the question, and for watching.
I love getting drunk off wine
I don't think Jesus was referring to their mindset but to the old covenant system. The old covenant law system involved a physical temple and the levitical priesthood.
That's not the system that the Lord chose to put the church in.
The church is an entirely new and different structure than Israel was.
Sadly, many people today are trying to mix old and new together and the results are disastrous. We replaced the temple with "church buildings" (unscriptural). We replaced the one body and the priesthood of every believer with one or two professional ministers and the rest are a "congregation" like Israel was.
Read the church epistles. Thats not how the church is supposed to function.
If the wine was the 'old Pharisical wordlview' how does one reconcile that the 'old wine' is better? Maybe a new paradigm is needed. If the focus is shift to the vessel and not the wine you'll have a better foundation.and you've done ok with that part. Think context about the preceding question the fasting habits and understand there was two major teaching schools at the time (the school of Shammai and the school of Hillel)... then Yohanna came on the scene but was most certainly schooled in Hillels methodology. Look at how they picked and trained disciples and relate to the 'stretching' and what that stretching material they received was. There was no Gospel 2029 years ago so what was the REAL Gospel being preached then by Jesus? Remember there was NO NCS / NT then also so what was their understanding then? What was being taught then by the Living Word made flesh (that living Torah scroll)? One must understand the message preached then apply the Savour and live as the Savor... so has the church got the RIGHT roadmap? One whom hears needs to discern it right, then from hearing it, put it into action (obedience with is God's love language). The old is always better so unless a person really understands that, they will forever be in the shallows. Salvation is of (from) the Jews! See Ps119v83
This doesn’t answer why he used this analogy in comparison to the Pharisees question. 🙄
its about the new covenant going to people outside the old covenant religion. people following the old covenant thought the old covenant was better.
romans 3
27 Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. Because of what law? The law that requires works? No, because of the law that requires faith. 28 For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law. 29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too, 30 since there is only one God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith. 31 Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Not at all! Rather, we uphold the law.
3 out of 4 Gospels?
I thought there was one Gospel.
Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John
These are commonly referred to as the "four gospels"
