- WHAT'S IN MY CAMERA BAG? WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY IN ALASKA EDITION
I thought it was about time that I did an updated 'what's in my camera bag' video, as it has been a few years since I last made one. I have recently been signed as a Nikon creator, so I am now shooting on the Nikon Z9 and a range of different lenses.
This video was shot by Libby Penman.

I'm still a DSLR shooter and don't think I'll be switching anytime soon just because of how cheap it is now. Recently I've picked up a 400mm 2.8g from Nikon and man does it feel nice. These used to be a dream but now the price point is so accessible.
Ah awesome! Glad you’re enjoying your camera
Absolutely agree with you!
Your dedication to showcasing the wonders of the natural world through your lens is truly remarkable. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to preserving our planet's precious creatures. Keep up the amazing work! ❤
Thank you so much for your kind words, I really appreciate it
“Small” bag :D carrying around such big utilities must be a heavy duty. Thats passion 🎉
Another really informative video - beautiful results... great work
Thank you, I’m glad you found it useful :)
I have the z9 with the z400 2.8. I made two trips to Alaska this summer and carried this combo on a peak design strap virtually everywhere I went and shot handheld photos, no video. I considered taking a lighter lens in my Brooks River walk in Katmai National Park but decided I paid too much not to use the lens (it is insured). It was a workout but is doable. For photos, I miss too many shots trying to use a tripod or even a monopod unless I am camped out in one spot. I am a 59 year old 5’7” female. I had to get a new bag when I got the lens. I use the Fstop Tilopa with the extra large ICU.
Sounds awesome, I am sure you got some great images. Definitely worth carrying it in my opinion!
I love hearing anything you want to talk about. I also love your pictures and videos, they are beautiful
Thank you so much!
I am a huge fan of yours Roxy, I love your work@@RoxytheZoologist
Loved watching this! Wondering what you use to carry all that glass tho 🤔
Hi Roxy. 👋
You're using my latest set up for my bird photography.. the Nikon Z9 plus the new 180-600mm Nikon lens. 😊 A brilliant pairing!
That's where my kit ends though...I always handhold, I don't need to narrate or film myself, so all your extras I do not require myself. I have been thinking of a tripod for video recording though. Thank you for the great vid! ❤
Ah awesome, it’s a great and versatile lens! Yes, the rest of my kit is all because primarily I film rather than photograph:)
Roxy, just found your channel and the first thing that brought a smile to my lips was that you pronounce "Nikon" the way it should be, kudos to you. SO many others have a funny pronunciation. They don't say Leeka or Leheeka when they talk about that german camera, do they? Will be watching more of your vlogs from now on.
Everyone has great camera gear but your passion, drive, dedication, commitments, respect for Nature will definitely reward you .Yes,dream big and best of luck .Yash, Ecocare Foundation,USA.
Thank you, I really appreciate that!
That's quite an endorsement for the Peak Design travel tripod that it is actually capable of supporting that fluid head and camera setup!!
Yeah it’s pretty impressive to be fair! It’s not sponsored by them in any way; I have zero affiliation with peak design :)
An impessive array of kit, but a bit of a job to lug it around, but we know what fantastic shots and recordings can be made.
It’s heavy, yes, but totally worth it! Plus I always keep up with my gym training to make sure I can carry my kit :)
How come you deleted your previous 'what's in my bag' video about your old setup? Just looking for it as it would be a more affordable option for me starting out also super helpful to see where you started out! Love your videos x
WOW!, I pretty much have the same equipment, with the exception of the Fluid Head and Wireless Mic (using the Komodo 5 and 7, along with the DJI Mic), I ordered the Z 400m 2.8 in April 2022, and the 180-600mm in July 2023 (still waiting for both lens to ship). The last time I was in Alaska was on a Cruise Ship in 2006, I found the Wildlife unbelievable! It is also where I learned about DSLR Camera's. At the time I had an HP Point in Shoot Pocket Camera, capable of shooting a max size of 640k images... Times have definitely changed :)
Ah awesome 😁
That's awesome, I too use the Peak Design Travel Tripod (with the universal head adapter and a video head). Mine is the aluminum one though, a bit cheaper than your carbon fiber version. It's such a great tripod!
I have a lot of the same gear including the z400 2.8 and 180-600. Might try to get on your next Africa trip and learn a thing or two
Thank you so much for sharing this with us
My pleasure 😊
Fabulous
Thank you
thank you so much. I was waiting for this video.
You are so welcome!
Maybe one day I'll have forearms and biceps big enough to carry industrial sized camera lenses like you Roxy. Great lesson nonetheless!
Have to keep up my regular gym training to make sure I’m strong for all my camera carrying!
Hi roxy :) love your channel. Can you pleaee recomand me about camera? What good camers to start with?
nice
i'm in love
Nice setup and kit. That 400mm is indeed a beast, as seen from the quality of your Lynx images in your last video. I am curious to know what you mean when you say you are signed as a Nikon creator though, is that your occupation? You always seem to be visiting many wonderful places, making these great vlogs. I can't imagine a better job to have, lol.
Great video as always.
No; my occupation is a freelance filmmaker and photographer. But Nikon support my work with photography kit and other opportunities etc
Have you tried the Z 400mm f4.5, if not do give it a try.
The lynx photos were superb.
She already have the 2.8, why would she want to try the 4.5... might be lighter but once you have 2.8 you'd never go 4.5 🤷
I’ve tried it, yes, but don’t love that lens. Lots of it is personal preference though!
@@dicekolev5360 i told because i think she mentioned she doesn't own the 2.8. Yes i know weight is never the matter, the bank balance is.
@@RoxytheZoologist Except the difference between f2.8 & f4.5 background separation and the inbuilt TC and super sharpness of the f2.8....do you find any other problems? I really want to buy that f4.5 lens over a f6.3 zoom & 70-200mm f2.8 for mainly bigcats. I don't have the budget for the 400 f2.8.
Can you mention any reason for not going with the f4.5 ?
@@stripes_in_raw The 600 - 6.3 ?
If I was using Nikon Z system, I would get two Nikon Z7 II Cameras, Nikkor Z 400mm 4.5 VR S and Nikkor Z 800mm 6.3 VR S, this set will be compact and Light weight, also more affordable.
The Z7ii doesn’t have the specs I need for my work as a filmmaker, but definitely a good option if you’re doing it as a hobby :)
@@RoxytheZoologist Well for purist like me that never do videos, the Z7II are all a still photographer needs. I have been a professional photographer, I would still choose the Z7II for professional still photography ! By the way, I think video work is much too overrated today !
same mic setup here
I have to say with the current IBIS and lens stabilisation the tripods are certainly not as much of a factor as they were in the past, at least for brief hand-held sessions. But obviously when waiting for a subject a 400/600mm prime will get tiresome!
I haven’t got any decent footage handholding a lens of this size - not enough stability, especially on boats
Ibis is master when taking only photos but the technology is still not quite there for video . No matter the mode, once you start panning it always fails and gets jerky. No matter if 400 f2.8, 600 f4 or 800 6.3
@@dicekolev5360Yes nikon's IS is really good for static shots, but as soon as you start panning or are unable to hold it still, it gets jerky. Fujifilm have the same problem, just not optimised for video.
Panasonic and canon do a very good job in video stabilization at longer focal lengths though.
@@dicekolev5360Not from what I've seen
How is the performance of the new 180-600 mm? it would be really nice if you can share some pics taken with it. Thanks
Lots of images on my Instagram already plus full Alaska vlog coming soon 😁🎥
What bag do you use to carry your equipment?
Interesting video 👍🙂
Glad you think so!
@@RoxytheZoologist 👍
That lense is crazy 😂 Basically looks like you're holding a telescope
Haha it is a big lens that’s for sure!
Question for you… do you ever find the Nikon screen limiting in terms that it does not articulate like the Canon? That is the only thing holding me back from jumping to Nikon. Love the lense selection and price point. Yourself and Morton Hilmer make me wanna go to Nikon so bad…..
Not at all, it moves around plenty for what ever I’d need. Plus, when I don’t have to carry kit long distances, I tend to use a bigger monitor, like the Atomos Ninja anyway for filming 😁👌🏻
@@RoxytheZoologist thank you very much
I don’t doubt your core strength 😂
From Indonesian 🇮🇩❤️
👍🏾😎
What bag or carrying case do you use?
Currently I have a shimoda backpack, but it’s not great for my filming kit, nothing to attach my tripod / doesn’t fit the bigger lenses, so looking for a new one :)
@@RoxytheZoologist How heavy is your gear (excluding the backpack itself)?
You look like Scarlett Johansson
Im tired of those "what is in my camera bag" . Be different, Be more creative! Just a thought!
It’s my most frequently asked question. If you don’t like them, simply don’t watch them!
