For the German one, it’s actually a bit of a word play…Biss with two s means „bite“ (so the vampire reference) and bis with one s is „until“, so it’s actually more like until midday 😅

Often times, German book titles are really weird. Either they are totally random and have nothing to do with the original title or they just use the original English title and give it a weird random German subtitle.

You can't translate or keep the cultural connotations around it by simply translating it. Cinder from Cinder-ella would have to be translated to Asche which means ash. The German term for Cinderella uses a still commonly used word for cinder that wouldn't easily remind the reader to Cinderella. You could just keep the English title but translating it.... You would in no shape or form create the same image or expectations in the readers head
The cinder cover with the blue dress reminded me of selection … I’ve never read selection but I’ve seen it lots… also that comment about the chicken soup had me snorting!
I'm from Bulgaria and I share your thoughts and feelings about The Raven Boys' cover. The first time that I saw it, I was like... "Um... Um.. Um... Art is precious and subjective and I'm trying to find beauty in each and every style of art but... WHAT. IS. THIS?!" And it is so sad because we usually get some really beautiful covers for YA fantasy here in Bulgaria. TRB (the translated one at least) never became that popular in the country and sometimes I wonder whether it would have done that had we gotten a more decent book cover.

Love the Lunar Chronicles, but yes the book covers weren't my fave. We had to read Cinder for school, and I was so self-conscious about it that it I just took the cover off when I brought it to class lol
i really like the german covers for the raven cycle series - but i love the original covers as well. a lot of the time i find myself disliking the german covers compared to the original ones (and am happy that my english is good enough to just buy the english version instead), but these are really cool. i also think they did a good job finding german titles that reflect the atmosphere of the books .. i tried translating them back, but "wen der rabe ruft" sounds so much cooler in german than "whom the raven calls" (english translation).

The final New Moon cover lowkey reminds me of some of Rhonda Parrish anthologies covers. Think ones like Scarecrow and Fae. Even some of alphabet series which I haven't read any of but I do plan on it.

I have never seen this Polish version of Cinder - I thought it was always the same as the US one! And the first edition of Clockwork angel... Before they were replaced, I already bought two of the three books and even though I REALLY don't like the covers I HAD TO hunt down the third book in this style😅🤦♀
I actually sort of love the cover of Clockwork Angel. The second two were a little weak. I think the benefit of the first one was that the model was sort of obscured in shadow, and had that mysterious London in the fog vibe, where the second two just had plain old models in your face, and it was a tad jarring.
8:04 German is my first language. I've read "The Lunar Chronicles" in german. I own a book with this exact cover. (Instead of the first one.) I think our covers are kind meh. Not awful, but also not beautiful. But at least the first 3 are metallic-shiny. (I have no idea why the last one, "Winter"/"Wie Schnee so weiß" isn't also shiny.)
Illustrators are often given synopsis and a techinical details that need to be on the book cover. Most publishers do not provide descriptions of the characters. That can be the reason for them not knowing she's Chinese. And it's easier to find stock photos of white girls, because most stock photos sites are based in the USA with around 80% white population. And they don't know Chinese to go and look for the photos on Chinese stock sites. So it's more of a laziness thing than whitewashing. A lot of book covers that were in this video are "designed" covers that basically means a collage of already existing copyright free photos and textures.
Ahaha, and once more I notice the german urge to rename Books😅. Dunno why here in Germany they like to do this.... I also never read twilight and I guess I also never will. I saw some of the movies thanks to a friend of mine who was a big fan of the series. And they convinced me to not read the books 😂

If we are going off the idea that the raven boys characters were in high school during the years of 2012-2014 (when the books came out), then they would've been born somewhere in between 1994 - 1997, so technically millennial/gen z cusps, or zoomers more likely.
That second Russian cover of The Raven Boys, with the Unrelated Beautiful Person on the cover, actually says "The Crows" (according to Yandex), so I think more was lost in translation than just the cover! 😄
Russian word for a crow is ворона, and for a raven is ворон, it's almost the same word, and воронята could mean both little crows and little ravens. So the translation is pretty accurate 😊

Personally, a lot of European edition covers just doesn’t do it for me, and Idk how people living in those countries can tolerate such weird, and often rather poor-looking covers (some are great tho, don’t get me wrong, it’s just the ones that have very little effort put into them that put me off).

for the German Cinder version, the shoes are actually all silver-foiled, so it really glitters in person, the digital cover doesnt do it justice
