Netherlands lost the WC final in both '74 and '78, but Cruyff retired from international football on the eve of the '78 tournament, officially because he needed to be near his family after someone broke into their home, tied them up and threatened to kill them, though there are theories that he had other reasons for not being willing to go. Though whether the Argentinian government would've allowed them to win even with JC in the team is a moot point I suppose.
