Guys You’re gonna want the antenna above your roof line as the satellite network is built out. Starlink doesn’t work like regular satellite internet, they cover or will cover the entire sky. You got kind of lucky with where the current satellites are at, but as the network is built out, it needs to see the whole sky.
When you were dropping that pole I was envisioning Liz getting squished like Wiley Coyote LOL
She made a great catch
Subed thanks. Ordered mine yesterday, 2023 date so far .
As for obstructions, the dish needs to see sky in a clear conical area 100 degrees wide perpendicular to the face of the dish. Where you have it mounted the overhang for the roof looks like it'll be an obstruction.
Also, with that long of a mounting arm, you should have some supports on it.
As it favors the North sky many people have got good results with that kind of install, The moor south you are from the 52'N line the more it looks North rather than directly UP.
I liked this video. I am helping a friend of mine get his hooked up for his family. They have Hughes net which is teriable! I got them on the list and hopefully they should get Star Link in a few months. Your mount is exactly what they need! As always, thanks for taking the time to film and share!
Rick From Virginia
Thanks Rick, glad you liked it! Thanks for watching. The link is in the description now!
Good job guys, that went smooth. Good luck to you both with the full-time YouTubing.
Good catch! Thanks for sharing.
Glad it worked thats awesome
Excellent job lowering the pole!
Love you guys
Dang that was pretty good team work. I thought it was going to be pretty darn heavy. Good job!🙂😄🤐🤪
So glad to start my weekend off with a new LBL video!
Thanks for watching!
Good catch 🙂
Good job I'm dropping the pole. You guys Keep On Truckin. You will be a success to success on CZcams and your homestead
I just watched your intro video and like what you have going on. I am hooked and new friend 5 stars
Thank you for joining us!
good job
SALUT,BON WEEK-END 🍻👍
Glad all's well that ends well nice catch guys . Be careful mike stay safe on that ladder. I thought that was snow u was walking in Liz n the shop. Hope the ⭐ link works better for you . We sure need some of your rain !!
That mount looks like the same mount my crappy internet dish has. Hopefully we get our Starlink soon. :)
..Gotta stay connected....lol...good one, stay safe..
I’ve got to admit, I thought for sure the base of that poll was going to snap and the dish was going to come down and hit Liz in the head. Not doubting you abilities but ….. lol
You did it👏. Good job on getting that attached to the house. Duct work is the handy man’s miracle tool. Just ask Red Green ( He’s on CZcams, if you haven’t watched him you need to). And I we noticed your table. We have the exact same one. Good vid guys. We shall see ya again. 😁
Bravo....I was so scared for the lady. I'm not trying that at home!
Thanks for sharing your tip. If you get snow, that location would catch the snow fall from the roof and rip it off the wall. Better on a gable where it won't catch too much at once. I personally would also want it somewhere that's easily accessible to clear snow off without needing a ladder, but rather just a broom or something similar. Have a great day!
It is on the gable end..
Safety Sally just had a heart attack. lol :)
Hi Mike n Liz! I am moving our Starlink dish as well! I am raising it another 9 feet, as I have encountered more obstructions as the nearby trees grew leaves this spring. Let's hope it works for both of us :)
Hopefully it’s working well!
Sweet
Your getting in the 200's out West I see...welp I guess it's just us in Northern Ontario that only see in the lower 100's if 100 at all on the Down Speed. I've also had to move my dish from my roof of my house since the Willow Trees filled in. I've now mounted mine on my barn and I send the signal from their wirelessly using a set of Ubiquiti Bridges.
Good Catch ! Its mounted now to low. the building is an obstruction. needs to be at the top. as high as you can mount it.
It Needs struts and the cable taping to the pole, And a drip loop before entering, A bit Crazy that you routed the cable before testing it for 24hrs. Amazing Catch Liz, That scared me.
3:22 At this point I was thinking, "Are we about to have us a Looney Tunes moment?".
Lol
Will the snow take it down?
Great job. Hopefully you'll get less cut outs when live streaming. By the way, great catching of that pole Liz.
Thanks Chris, hopefully it’s an improvement!
its good that you took down the wood platform (i.e. future hawks nest)
hell ya mike you do have shoes......lol
Need a taller ladder…or wings…to work all the way to the soffits! Nice work. 😎👍
It’s wayyyy up there
That intro lol
Please get a chainsaw that doesn't require a windup key. 😂
How well does your starlink perform off grid style??? I Teach remotely and need high speed quality internet. If I can accomplish this then I can teach full time while living off grid. Your show is great thanks for putting it out there!! From Southern Oregon
We are grid tied to power but hope you move off the grid. I would think it would depend more on location of satellites than being off grid. It works really well for us even though we are out of good cell phone range. They wanted to reach a rural audience from the start. Good luck with your teaching and internet endeavors, thanks for watching!
@@LaidBackLiving thanks for the info I definitely appreciate it. Have a great summer 👍👍👍🇺🇸
hi can i ask why you havent put the dish on your roof
Some winters we have feet of snow here in Idaho. So there’s that. Plus accessibility
Is that a flat coat retriever?
Great job, so how do you like the Starlink dish so far? Has it been reliable during winds and storms? I am new to the channel so I still haven’t watched some of your earlier vids so sorry if I am asking something you already covered. Peace!
Thanks for going us. We love it. For what it is, it’s great.
@@LaidBackLiving Just ordered it! Thanks for sharing!
It's only $25 for the Starlink pole bracket on their site that goes with the J Mount you bought on Amazon.
Build a deck on that end, at level with living quarters, with stairs going to hillside back there
In case you don't know (by now) you're using that chainsaw upside down.
So what was the "hack" other than finding a better deal on a mount?
Did you guys recently post this up in the Starlink reddit? I remember seeing a picture that looked like this this morning
Lol yes
Nice catch Liz, we need to get you a hard hat! Be careful guys, you have a Wedding coming up. Take care, Jack 👷♀️
Hey Mike and Liz.
I got a little concerned when you cut the pole and when Liz was going to catch it. How ever I think you would have been better off mounting the dish on the roof because this limits it. I assume you have a metal roof also. If it is on the roof in the right place there should not be anything in it's way from what I could see. Besides the original mount would be a lot stronger than that one you have with no braces. Looks like you building is pretty high and would clear the trees better than the side of it.
Just some thoughts from a old man that has been there and done that. ;-) Good Luck.....
stagger your sheet rock next time. The vertical seems should not be above the other boards seem.
Sounds good thank you.
Holy S**t! You guys get lucky doing some awfully wreckless stuff. So far Mike, if you were a cat you would have surpassed the 9 lives cats are said to have. Not just the possibility of the pole slipping out of your hands and dropping onto Liz but, you almost lost your Starlink dish in the process. Please, please be careful so that we have you around to make more videos without making our poopers pucker!
What was the money-saving hack? Buying your mount from Amazon?
Yes!
I just installed a Dishy with the included three bolt mount, on the top of my Dad's roof, which is pitched about the same as yours. I located it near the ridge, placed two of the three bolts directly over a rafter, and ran a 15" piece of 2x4 blocking between two other rafters where I needed the third bolt to go. I used roofing cement and flashing to keep things waterproof. I don't think you really need the custom "volcano" mount unless you have a really steeply pitched roof.
Oh, and that made it have zero obstructions even though there are tall trees all around. The obstruction checker part of the Starlink app is pretty good.
It would appear you used the wrong side of the chainsaw to cut that pole.
Sooooooo....... where is the 'money saving hack' portion of this video? ?? I seem to have missed that part.
Amazon mount vs Starlink mount
Did you guys name your cats after "Jack&Jill" the format of dance competition ? Example: czcams.com/video/BA3rAMBdCo0/video.html
i would of put it on the roof
Drop...sorry, had to go with what's more fun to watch.
wow you have next to nothing for insulation in the attic, sure you dont have 40 below winters but any cooling you have will be lost, standard is 18" of blown in in an attic in any climate to keep heat and cold out, specially with a metal roof.. i looked into that star link set up as i am on a wireless canopy system witch was supplied an set up free, with UN-limited Dada, for $58cnd a month, not bad speeds but though id look into it, and for over $700 plus shipping for the little equipment is nuts, then a starting monthly fee of $147 plus tax, 114%. you read the fine print and it says in there, once all testing has been complete and there whole system is set up the fees will go up, because they say they re only running on an experimental license.. highway robbery
Thanks for the input!
This is not a workable solution but you did get my click.
Well thank you for the click, and thanks for watching.
@@LaidBackLiving It is the second click that counts.
4percent
Why did you go to all that trouble mounting on side instead of just going a few more feet and put it on the roof? Now, you'll be doing *that* next. The only logical thing to do. Gives much steadier working surface, plus can consider anywhere on the roof peak to optimize positioning.
Well, a few reason. Lots of snow, lots of trees, trail and error
You're gonna need more satellite rollout by Elon for it to be seamless...
So damn lucky Liz is not laying in a hospital bed in a comma. And I'm not trying to be funny. She was so very lucky the pole didn't break loose at the bottom.
No drop,, , , , , ,
A hack?
Cheap Amazon mount vs. expensive Starlink mount
@@LaidBackLiving I guess but really its just a simple DIY project. I guess your definition of hack is different than the dictionary. Have a good day.
@@Richardj410 I too, was thinking they actually had a hack, but that's what I get for thinking when I'm not used to it!
If you stand under an extension ladder with a worker aloft using tools, wear a helmet. A dropped tool sticking out of your skull will make your Internet connection seem like a first world problem.
Sounds good thanks
people heres the hacker people look out
Yikes...$500 dish and you didn't take it down before taking the pole down, super lucky is right.
Lol we nailed it
That was pretty sketch, you needed to strap that thing and get people and dogs away from it. You about killed your wife!
Glad it worked and no one got crushed!
Lol thanks!
Why are you not protecting your ears from that chain saw? Life with hearing aids is NOT fun. I know!
What!? Can’t hear ya. It’s electric
@@LaidBackLiving elec does not matter....still loud.
So, doing a job properly ... in millennial-speak ... is a hack. Well OK then.
