    Hi Shane, great video! I used your automations and paired them up with the security system plugin in homebridge/hoobs. With the plugin you get a flashy tile in HomeKit you can set to “home”, “away” and “night” so you don’t have to use a (dummy) switch. It also provides notifications when it’s armed/disarmed and triggered. That was the big reason for me to choose for this plugin. You can also play sound and delay the trigger but I still have to figure that one out. Works perfect for me with the Aqara sensors and the siren of a Ring spotlight cam. Thank you for the instructive video’s!

    Excellent video as always. Just got my Aqara hub on your recommendation (and like a dozen door and window sensors). The thing is fantastic! It was a bit of a struggle to set it up, but after I set the region to Chinese mainland in the Mi Home app, I was good to go. I've already rigged things up so my AC turns off when I open a window and turns back on if and only if ALL the windows are closed. Sensors open up so many doors! (Horrible dad-level pun intended.)

    Very cool.
    I think my recommendation for this type of set-up would be to add any/all exterior lighting devices to automatically turn on when the ‘security’ system is triggered. As many of us are using camera systems for monitoring our property, it would (hopefully) provide better image clarity for review.
    Also. Maybe I’m expecting too much from Apple, but I’d really like if this same functionality could be obtained without using a 3rd-party App. Your solution is definitely creative & simple, but I’m stubborn and prefer to not have to use & maintain a bunch of different Apps for ‘specialty’ features. Just my $0.02.

    I run Homebridge on a Raspberry Pi with Elk plugin for the Elk M1 my company sells that I put in my home. Lets me arm with Apple Watch or unlocked iPhone and you can use any sensor for automation. Recently I bought a Resideo (Honeywell) Lyric Controller because it has Homekit integration. It works great. Homekit will eventually be a great solution for alarm companies that never wanted to start working on home automation because it puts all the control in the hands of the end user.

    Hi Shane, just sat this up and have it working like supposed to. However I suggest that the alarm off automation also resets the speaker volume to a normal lower volume level besides pausing the music, otherwise it can be very loud next time you start up some music. I did this by making two scenes, one for pausing the speakers, and one for adjusting the volume. I then include both scenes in the trigger the alarm off automation.

      Brian May thanks! I haven’t tried creating conditional home automations using shortcuts. Doubt it’s as easy as the Eve app tho if it is possible. For notifications, the easiest thing is probably just turning on notifications for sensors “when nobody is home” in the home app.

    • @ShaneCreates

      No, unfortunately there isn't that I can think of. If using this method, I'd probably just set up notifications for all of my sensors included in the setup to notify me when away. Then you could assume that the alarm was triggered if you get notified of one of the sensors opened while not home.

It's super frustrating. Every time I try to create a new rule and press the 'trigger' button the app crashes on me. Both on the iPad and the iPhone. I've tried deleting, reinstalling the app with no success. I wrote to Eve and told them my issue. I even sent a screen recorded video that shows the app crashing. Not even they know what's going on or how to fix it. Has any one gone through something like that?

    I am not yet familiar with eve. Assuming I have eve installed on my phone, where is that critical conditional logic actually stored? Is it on my phone or on an eve cloud somewhere? In ether case it sounds like it would be dependent on my phone, the internet or both which wouldn’t be ideal for an alarm system. My hub is currently an Apple TV, would it be better if eve was on an iPad that I was used as a hub?

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  Před 3 lety

      That is probably possible...through Apple Music on the Apple TV, not CZcams. But that could potentially result in a pretty slow response if your tv has to "wake up" when the automation is triggered. You could test it out, but mine takes several seconds when doing something like that.

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks Bruce! You probably could...sort of. You will not be able to trip the Aqara alarm with other, non-Aqara sensors. There's no way to do that. But you could use the "security system" state that Aqara exposes to homekit as your "condition" for the automations you've setup, instead of using a smart plug like in this video. Hope that makes sense.

    • @brucedelacruz9973

    Shane, your videos have been a super help getting my HomeKit automations set up through the Eve app. I just set up the alarm but I’ve got about a 6 second lag between when the door is triggered and when the alarm sounds and the only thing I can think is causing this is the ecobee door sensors I am using has to run through the ecobee thermostat first then to HomeKit, what do you think? I’m thinking I may need to go with the Eve sensors that are direct connected to WiFi or Bluetooth for a faster response time, what are your thoughts? Keep up with the great videos!!

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  Před 3 lety +2

      Thanks Mark! I'm not sure, I don't use the Ecobee sensors for any of my regular automations, so it's hard to say. Bluetooth sensors can also be a little slower sometimes. I tend to like sensors that connect via zigbee to a hub for speed, if every second is important. Those seem to be faster than bluetooth for me.

    @brucedelacruz9973 Před 3 lety

    Hey Shane! Had a question hoping you might know the answer. I reference this video all the time. So I setup a DIY system just like you did. But I’m actually using the Aqara Hub as the “dummy trigger”. I like it better because of the security system status it exposes to HomeKit.
    So I just got an Aqara button and trying to configure the presses to activate the security system itself.
    Single for “arming”
    Double for disarming
    And long to activate the Code Red scene kind for like a panic button.
    They all work great but the one thing I’m trying to do is that when I do a single press, it arms the system, but it waits for 30 seconds before it actually arms. That way we have time to leave the house before it triggers anything. Does that make sense? I thought I would find it in Shortcuts but I can’t tweak each specific “press” on the Aqara button in Shortcuts. And i looked in the Eve and Home+ app and no sort of “IF single press, wait 30 seconds before arming security system”.
    Any thoughts?!? Would really love to try to get this working! Thank you in advance!

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Bruce. A couple of thoughts... One - you can probably "convert to shortcut" when setting up your single press and then use the "wait" action to create that delay.
      Second - you can actually create that delay in the alarm's setting in the Aqara app so it will give you that 30 second delay every time you arm the system. That's probably the route I would go. I will make a HomeKit Alarm System at home and at my workplace by creating two places in the Eve App. Then I will be able to know if someone breaks into my workplace when I am at home and vice versa. But what do you do if you are out? Yes, you can get a notification in your iPhone, but you may not notice it when it is in your pocket. Can you set a good alarm signal in the iPhone or use some form of caller when outside the local network?

    • @ShaneCreates

      No there is not a great way to do that. This solution is more of a DIY option, using what you may already have available at home. I'd say, if you are truly concerned with security, consider getting a real, dedicated security system. There are a few available that support homekit.

Go into Siri & Search in your Settings app and toggle "Hey Siri" off and then toggle it back on. Go through the process for Hey Siri again in a QUIET space with no noise and do it properly. Do the test again and you'll see that Siri now recognizes only your voice. This worked for me.... although I would never have Hey Siri be able to disable my alarm system.

I really like Apple, but I would really like to have the Google Nest video Doorbell (and therefore have the Google Assistant Smart display), do you know of any apps which would allow us to stay in the Apple environment and not through the GA system just for this as well?
    And secondly, do you know of any sound system compatible with Homekit but not as expensive as the HomePod? I have already 2 of these. As much as I love them, they are expensive.

    • @ShaneCreates

      Thanks for watching! I do not have any nest products. There is the Startling Hub that is made to integrate nest products into HomeKit, but I’m not sure what level of integration you will get with that. There is also Homebrige, which many people have used to integrate ring doorbells into HomeKit. But again, usually these solutions are not as good as native HomeKit support.
      Any speakers such that support Airplay 2 should integrate with your HomeKit setup pretty well.

    Hi Shane, I’m in the process of deciding how to do a homekit alarm system. I followed your instructions but for some reason when my device triggers, it’s not setting off the scene. I’m using an ihome device as the dummy switch and Lutron lights / homepods for my scene. I programmed one of the Lutron switches / door locks / and sensors to be the triggers, but not of them are working. Any ideas on what could be going wrong? Also, I created a really cool Siri shortcut I would love to use with this setup to turn on my bedroom TV, load my home cam’s, and flash all of the lights in the house with the siren sounds playing on the homepods. Any idea how to trigger a Siri shortcut via a door sensor or homekit switch? Hey Patrick, not really sure what the problem could be if everything is set up right. I'd double check the automations in the eve app. Maybe remove all triggers except one in an attempt to troubleshoot the problem.
      When you setup a new homekit automation and convert it to a shortcut, you do not have majority of the shortcut actions that are available in regular shortcuts, unfortunately. That's why you can't use the Apple TV remote app in the shortcut/automation.

    Problem with this is the reliability of smart devices these days. Relying on WiFi, Z-wave, Bluetooth, or even this new Thread technology is not something I would put full confidence in. Devices can sometimes go non responsive or scenes could fail and that could mean the difference between someone breaking into your house or not. I currently have a Paradox alarm system that is hardwired and has motion sensors, door sensors, smoke alarms, window sensors, and water sensors in the basement all hardwired into a panel in my basement. I would LOVE for a way to integrate this system into HomeKit by maybe some sort of Homebridge plugin for the control panel or swapping out the control panel.... will have to look further into it

      You can now use "convert to shortcut" when creating automations. You might be able to do it that way. General idea is make a new automation for when a door opens, then convert to shortcut. Then use an IF statement to determine if the outlet is on or off. If it's on, "wait" 30 seconds, set HomePod alarm sounds and other lights or scenes, etc. Otherwise do nothing. Haven't tried this so I'm not sure how well it would work, but that's probably how I'd go about it. Can't add a delay in the eve app.

      I‘ve fixed it. First of all I have only one Sonos One in the automation. Then I‘ve set all my sonos speakers with AirPlay 2 to the automation and it works. Next problem: how I get the Philips hue blinking? At the moment the bulbs only turn and stay on :-/ sorry for my bad english 🙈

      @@Chabalaba83 haha no worries. I used the light effect mode discussed in a previous video but that method doesn't work with hue lights. Unfortunately phillips hue doesn't expose the light effect mode to homekit.
      There is a way to do this using shortcuts. If you convert your automation to a shortcut, you can make the light turn on, wait a couple of seconds, turn off and repeat a number of times.

      @ShaneCreates  Před 4 lety

      I don't think there is an easy way to set an alarm on your phone for sensors unless you are using a dedicated alarm system. Best options is probably to use automations to send an alarm sound to airplay speakers, or just get some type of alarm system. There are a few out there that work with homekit (Aqara, Abode, etc.).

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  Před 4 lety +2

      Yes so you can turn on/off the “security system.” Otherwise, the alarm would sound every time you open the door after setting up the automation.

    • @ShaneCreates

      PW-Gamer nothing is connected to the outlet. It’s just a “dummy switch” that allows me to use the conditional automation. Yes you can definitely use the Aqara hub to turn on/off the security system instead. That’s what I’ll probably do. The smart outlet is a good solution for anyone who doesn’t have an Aqara hub.

      Xavier A No, not at all. I still very much enjoy my Aqara setup. I will probably combine them and use both.

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  Před 4 lety +2

      Xavier A I don’t have an ecobee (yet) but yes I think this will work. As long as they show up in HomeKit as a motion sensor. Also worth noting tho: the main reason I love the Aqara sensors is, not only are they super fast and reliable, they are VERY affordable. So they are a good option if cost is a concern and you need a lot of sensors. Not sure your location, but I’ve been told that they will be available in the Amazon US store very soon.
