The song Black Sabbath was written when the band was still called Earth. They would put it in their live sets and people were blown away. Anyway after mistakenly being booked at a gig due to there being another band called Earth, a pop band, they changed their name to Black Sabbath after the Boris Karloff movie of the same name. Sabbath's first album was recorded in October 1969 and was released on Friday, February 13th 1970.

First time I heard the song "Black Sabbath" I was stoned of course and the song scared the shit out of me and excited me at the same time. That day in that bean bag a metalhead was born. I love your reactions! Keep up the good work! If you want a less talked about tune Sabbath song that kicks ass spin "Hand of Doom" I love it! The live version off ”Made in Japan” is even better than the studio version IMHO.

I prefer the live 1970 (the one from the TV show) version, myself, but the MiJ one is great too.

Thank you for a great reaction,if you`re gonna do some more Deep Purple I would suggest you do anything from they`re classic live-album "Made in Japan"(1972), Deep Purple were/are one of the few bands that were actually better live than in the studio, they`re muscicianship on that album will completely blow your mind

I read that Heavy Metal got it's name from a critic who said it sounded like heavy metal objects being dropped on each other, but it didn't say which song was being reviewed.
