Hey all! Thanks for the supoort on this video! My friend and I actually did go and create the first SSD grip case! Just made a new video on it. We just listed them for sale too! czcams.com/video/y_B_owcabtU/video.html
None of the items you mention are available for sale booo
Leaving anything connected to the port while carrying it around is just a bad idea no matter how you see it. Sooner or later you'll end up with a messed up port. Next thing you know you have a faulty connection that requires you to move and bend the cable into a specific angle in order for it to work. Been there, had done it and regretted it. If you love and care for your expensive device, you better spend the little extra time (once in a while) it'd require to transfer the data to your external solution.
add a magsafe sticky strip to the ssd and it litreally fits as an accessories
Why don't you just use an SSD flash drive? Use something like the SanDisk 1TB Extreme PRO solid state flash drive.
I swear if someone invents a MagSafe shaped SSD that attaches to the back of the iPhone with a short cable connection, it will sell like hot cakes.
Someone on CZcams did already
Show meeeee!
@@Mrstefdidit figured someone would!
@@Mrstefdidit links or it didnt happen

This video is a game changer for me!! Seriously! Even though I'm still an Android lover and haven't been compelled enough to switch to iPhone I love this setup for my Samsung. I'm going to try it. I have the T7 SSD so I just need those adapter things now. Thank you!
The iPhone 15 Pro's ProRes Log video recording is truly incredible. 📽👌 It allows for stunning cinematic video quality and unprecedented control over your footage, making it a game-changer for content creators and videographers. Btw incredible iPhone camera
rig.
is ProRes Log available for 128gb?
Why not we just transfer recorded prores log video to ssd after recording? is there any video quality difference between log video recorded in local vs direct recorded to external ssd?should be the same right? this is not the same as clean hdmi recording as found in cinema cam/mirrorless cam rig right?
I use a M.2 2230 form factor and a small enclosure then double side taped it into a case with a short USBC cable. That works really well.
Perfect. I checked out the dimensions on the Samsung regular T7 and it will work. Also for stability one could use an iPhone grip. I have an old Shoulderpod grip that should work fine.
My original wishlist is gone, thank you for sharing! I’m absolutely getting your setup, I’m so excited to get filming 🤟
I’m waiting for my 15pm to arrive and yes I’ll put a thin case on it and my first thought for this is just good ol velcro tape on the case and the drive - detaches easy and can be kept in a separate pocket till you’re ready to shoot..
Coming for a way to split the USB-C so I can use my Crucial X6 SSD with a Rode Go II at the same time. Crucial SSD IS using Mag Safe ring from Mophie. It’s called the Mophie Snap. Amazon sells them 2 for $15. Works great by itself. I just want the Rode Go II feeding digital audio into Blackmagic’s camera app at the same time, since Michael showed that you can record directly from iPhone 15 Pro to the SSD with the app. I don’t know if a Thunderbolt 4 splitter cable or a USB-C splitter cable would work for that.
I just used a 180 that works with a case plus a microSD reader. Works nicely and very tiny.
which 180 was it? A lot don't work with a case
Nice video and thank you for making it. I had somewhat of an idea like yours, but I do like the small adapters you used, didn't think of that. I was going to use velcro to attach my drive to my phone, just a thought.
I’ve been using the Apple USBc SD card reader as an external storage device. It looks a little clunky but it weighs practically nothing and can withstand a lot of movement.
And the write speed doesn't make it drop frames?
@@thatssomegoodpie i haven’t had any yet but im using an Angelbird 300MB/s card.
Dude, this is awesome!
Thanks man 🙌🏼
Just what I wanted - I thank you very much!
Some kind of magnet comes to my mind for stabilization.
Hi did u figure it out the magnet for stabilization? thanks.
Love the innovation and creative thinking here. Excited to see what accessories will follow. At the moment if I'm doing mobile filmmaking, I'm using the Apple AV Adapter for iPad. It has usbc pass through power, HDMI, and USB 3 A port (I use A to C) for going to the Samsung drive. It's a perfect mobile rig with the beastgrip.
Nice setup! That adapter is also great!
@@initialfocuswhat USB C hub was that? You mentioned it had 10 gig ethernet, I didn’t think that speed was possible over USB-C. I thought it had to be thunderbolt.
15 Pro Max still sold out everywhere here. :-(
Genius! I hope many gadgets using similar ideas will be coming out soon.
Apple said good-bye to lightening and gives us much wider options with USB C.
They made a really great decision - finally!
It was an EU decision not Apple.
I'm only 2 minutes into your video and enjoying it greatly! Not only is it informative, you're a funny guy!!!!
Hey thanks so much! 🙌🏻
There is super thin genuine Velcro strips that would hold the drive perfectly against the phone. Perhaps you may need to experiment with different 180 degree usb-c adapters to adjust for the slight added thickness of the Velcro. I’ve bought several brands on Amazon and fortunately there are enough differences to play with.
This was amazing! Thanks so much!!!
To fix the wobbling issues perhaps take a look at some of those clever rubber pad type grips that you can get for your phone which stick to the car dashboard. They're super sticky but not in the literal sense. Could cut one of those down and place it behind there and you should be good to go.
I did exactly this. Works great!
I’m wondering if you are able to add some sort of magnet, like part of a MagSafe ring to the back of the drive. Great setup, thanks.
I can see someone combining one of those Magnetic USB-C connectors that supports 10Gb/s, a short USB C cable, then a MagSafe SSD enclosure/holder. Then you can magnetically attach this accessory when you need it. Maybe some enclosures will be showing up on Etsy that are 3D Printed with this type of setup in mind. The other accessory that could benefit from some "storage" options, are those MagSafe Camera Shutter attachments (the grip + button thing). If they added a way to connect to the USBC port and add in a high speed SD Card slot, you can quickly swap out for more storage as you need it.
Love the innovative thinking! Probably will all happen. Although while magnetizing would be amazing for efficiency, probably wouldn’t be great for recording data. Think about halfway through recording a clip and you accidentally bump it and the magnet disconnects, odds are it would corrupt the video file.
Two options for stability that come to mind. I’ll start with the less clean (but most strong)
Option 1: Velcro on both the phone and the ssd.
Now the less intrusive and probably sufficient solution…
Option 2: diy MagSafe ring on the back of the SSD placed where ever needed to hold it in place.
Better than gaff or double sided tape.
I have a couple MagSafe compatible mounts that I use in the car for my phone that came with little metal plates that attach via 3M adhesive. I stuck a couple of those to the back of my SSD and they grab onto the MagSafe ring in phone or in MagSafe case with no problem at all
Amazon has the MagSafe rings in a 2pack for $15. It is called the Mophie Snap adapter.
Install half piece of MagSafe magnet on the SSD and it will hold. Tried to do the same and it works fine.
Thanks. This definitely has gotten me to think about adapting your concept to meet my needs. 😊😊
Love it! 🙌🏼 adapters are cool haha
@@initialfocus I just ordered some of the adapters. So cheap and easy to use. I fought with the cables just like you. Going to play around with a T7 2Tb and get a decent setup for myself. Btw I have the action button programmed to launch the Blackmagic Camera app now.
Lovely and cleanest simplest set up! How about the heat when ssd is placed right behind the back pf the phone?
Looks dope definitely the way i would go just gonna get the double sided tape tbh
I have a couple of the samsung thumb drives and you’ll get dropped frame while playing it back on the phone but the footage is perfect after import and playing it back on my MacBook
Oh interesting! Good to know!
I have even heard of people using V30. SD cards to record ProRes Log on the 15 pro. Wild @@initialfocus
I sometimes use the DXO camera attached to my iPhone with a 512GB-1TB micro sd card, it’s a smaller rig and has beautiful a 1 inch sensor camera
Suggestion, lubricate the connector contacts before gluing two adapters together. They fail due to corrosion and the lubricant will prevent that. Once glued with cyanoacrylate glue, they are permanently bonded. I suggest the dry type lubricant that puts a single molecule thick coating on the connector rather than the thick greasy lube but either can work. Vaseline works if that’s all you have. As for the drive shifting, part of a magnetic ring might work. If you don’t mind chopping up an inexpensive flexible case. You might make a careful cutout for the drive which will keep it from shifting about. I’d try both. Cases are $10 so cheap.
I like this minimal setup it seems to be feasible for shooting videos and snapping photos. 😎💯💯💪🏾👍🏾
Ideally you get a usb c splitter thats tiny for power delivery in one and ssd in the other. Plug it into mains or slim battery along w the SSD
Love it! Haha
How do I get around using both the SD card holder and an external mic, for a iPhone cage/rig?
Beautiful and simple!!
Just like you! 😏
@@initialfocus 🤫😉
Oh that looks so cool I need to pick that up
Whats the brand of the 180 degree USB-C adapter you're using in the video?
An accessory I pulled from my Intehill portable monitor. Not sure if they sell it stand alone. Here’s the video of that product:
czcams.com/video/6MTzVc2xpKY/video.html
That's great! I'm wondering if there's a solution to connect an SSD AND usb-C microphone...I'm hoping to use the Rode Me-C mini-shotgun...
nice setup mate!
You can get a magnet case, then also buy seperate magsafe sticker magnets and attach it to the ssd, then you can snap the ssd onto the back of the phone like an apple charger would snap on, and then run a small cable from the ssd to the phone. One-handed shooting and the ssd stays in place and can snap off easily
I have metal plates from a magnetic phone mount that I put on my SSD and it snaps to the MagSafe case I use perfectly. Now I just need to grab a cable that has the necessary flexibility to efficiently handle a 180-degree bend
im gonna be going to Disneyland in December for my birthday and my 15 pro max delivers November, so excited to capture high quality video with this setup
I have this same ssd card but I’m having issues with mines. What did you format it to for the iPhone
Looks great, but what about the over heating issues with the 15
I think the best bet is to create a case with a secure section for different storage options
im sure many will be made , the usb c gives many options now
Attach a magnet sticker to the angelbird and put it on the magsafe ring should stop the wiggle.
*How about a case with a built-in SSD and connector, like the battery case one?*
This capability is really making me excited about mobile "professional" shooting. I used to get so hung up on having a so called "professional" camera. However, I'm now taking the lead to create only with the iPhone. There's literally no excuse now, especially with functionality like this.
There is absolutely no camera required now, with the current generation of phones. I am literally trying to sell off all my camera gear. Even a point and shoot is unnecessary.
Buy those Magsafe adhesive magnets and attach it to the drive. You could cut a portion of it since it doesn't cover the entirety of the iPhone's magnets.
Honestly I’ve just been using the as card reader for iPad, and an as card. It’s light weight enough that I don’t mind the little dongle hanging off hahaha
it can also shoot to SD and even micro SD, which would make for even cleaner setups
Interesting solution that you would like to use. But I would still like to use an external microphone for recordings at the same time.
Can you recommend something to me?
I really like the set up only thing is I wish you could use a case while in this mode 😅
Because the internal iPhone mic is not that great, especially outside dealing with wind, is there a way to have this external drive “setup” and also have a Rode mic plugged in the iPhone? Maybe it will need some sort of a double or triple tiny usbc adapter right?
for me using samsung t5 i have purchased steel magsafe ring to hold it on the place.
Try a small piece of ‘Alien Tape’ to affix the ssd to the back of the iPhone. Strong, but can be easily removed without a sticky mess.
There is this double sided tape thing. Don’t remember the name of it but it’s a material that is sticky but easy to peel off. Then wash it and dry it and it becomes as sticky as your first got it. Does not leave any residue. Don’t remember the name of it but it’s out there and would be perfect to keep the drive on the phone.
You could use an OWC drive or something similar.
I think filming a concert with this would be risky as a concert is 1hour ish long and the phone coupled with the Ssd might overheat. Short bursts why not but a whole show…. What do you think ?
You do the best job my brother
A case with pass through port with battery and SSD or micro SSD port would be amazing.
Small piece of plastic hook and loop will solve the ssd mounting and allow removal/install
What do you think about using usb c flash drive that support high speed < 220 mb/s it will be better and smaller
Thanks Michael! What’s your SOUND RECORDING recommendation with any iphone shooting? What mic to catch the ambience sound on the iphone 15? And probably some levalier mics for dialogue but which?? So looking forward if you have any links or info on this important subject. THANKS!!!
I need to make a clean set up where I will have connected an SSD or memory card + the DJI Mic. If anyone can help please let me know
Very good thanks you for sharing.
Would be interested to see how the Kingston DataTraveler Max usb thumb drives work as they seem to be quite quick
For sure! Can’t wait to see variations of this
Would nVME maybe have a smaller profile? I'm trying to figure out a setup that would work on a gimbal, yet to see anyone do that
PD - Power Delivery. It's in the USB C specs. BTW still technically a cable and not wireless. Finally recording to external storage is probably the biggest upgrade in years for Iphone
Love to know if there is a way to run a shotgun mic and USBC external drive at the same time
That's a really clever idea!
The problem I have with shooting concerts is battery life not storage issues. My old 12 Pro had .5TB and the new 15 Pro has 1TB. I carry multiple Battery packs, two MagSafe and one with both a Lightning and USB-C. I also use a case. Looks like a neat idea but don’t see a way to make it work?
An nvme mini enclosure seems cheaper and fast enough write speed. The main thing missing is a mini solution for power delivery if recording long concerts at 4k60.
A case with an ssd/CF Express holder would be epic.
No doubt someone will release it soon I’m sure!
They sell MagSafe rings in sticker form. I think a quarter of it can hold the ssd. I don’t know about the thickness and fit tho.
A usbc thumb drive does work! Easy !
I like the angle adapter. Even cleaner would be a 1 TB SanDisk flash drive. $70.
Wouldn’t the magnets in the max safe wreck the SSD or cause file corruption?
You could cut the appropriate portion of a magsafe magnet and glue it on your ssd
To stick it to the phone use some Sugru. It’ll hold like it’s permanent, but can be taken off with a plastic scraper.
Are you able to record directly on an SSD while also using the external DJI Mic through the USB-C port?
PDN is Power Delivery Network. Very nice video, good ideas.
Does the beast grip and lenses work with a phone with a case or does it always have to be careless?
I like the idea of using SD cards instead and you have swappable memory on demand.
What format should the SSD be formatted in? Because no one says anything about it, which is very strange
We want videos like this 👍🏽 just try making another video which can be done with much smaller devices like pen drive or type c to sd card reader and it should also be hassle free just like how you have shown it to us. Amazing work I really loved it
Ohhhh I’ve got something cooking you’re going to love just like that!
So maybe i missed something. What is the process of bypassing the phone drive and save directly to the SSD?
I want this but for my MB air. I use a internal ssd on a enclosure. I tried using sticky pads but the enclosure doesn’t stick for long.
Maybe if you can use a metal ring to go with the MagSafe from you phone
With the expansion dongle can I do a USB mic and external drive? Hmmmmm
Can you edit ProRes on the iPhone while using the attached SSD or UHS card?
I tried using my sandisk 2tb ssd with the provided cable but when i pan, the video seems to lag or is jittery. Can you help me out? Thanks!
Amazing
Dongle question in that setup can you add a USB mic to that?
you think I can make a magsafe angelbird cf express type a reader ? similar steps just not ssd but their reader ? hope you can answer
It’s out is stock!
this is what i was looking for, it would be nicer if I can attach to any phone cases.
Will a T7 Shield work ?
Can the iPhone 15 use a 2TB SSD ?
and then you take out the usb-c and the small part stays in 😅 there will be mounts soon voor small ssd's with a small cable I guess.
Can I transfer videos captured by iphone 15 pro max to external hard drive
how do you manage if you want to connect a mic and a ssd at the same time?
can you please make this for Vlogging
