  • I realized I never talked about actual visual novel game development on this channel so I figured I'd make a little video on it lol. This is a very High level overview of some things that happen during viznovel development, and definitely can be further expanded upon in terms of the sections and stuff. If there are video requests on something specific let me know and I'll try to make something on it!
    ------------------------------------------------------------------
    If you didnt watch the vid, here is the tldw:
    Plan
    Don't start development too fast
    Seek out feedback
    Don't harp on projects needing to be perfect

    The part about your friend calling you a dumbass because he easily solved your puzzle is SO RELATABLE. I had huge story where the final act twist was that the protagonist had a split personality and was actually the villain. First person I gave the script to predicted the ending as soon as the villain was introduced.

      yep that stuff happens so often it seems😅all I know is going forward, I always go to that friend for a read through of whatever I’m writing because he’ll always call out something that’s lame on it haha😭hopefully that lesson didn’t hurt too much when you showed them lol

    A friend ended up hiring other friends of hers way too early for voice acting, and we didn't even get the demo done, those people were pressuring us to see the results so hard!!!

      ahh😵yeah voice acting is one of the last things to lock down for that reason! I learned that the hard way as well😅

      @ChrisMason_01  Před měsícem +3

      yep! that sounds like my friends also😭they’ll call out stuff that’s confusing or questionable all the time! it’s always good to get consistent feedback if your friends are available for it. that’s what I’m doing going forward for sure!😂

    Even though this is very different, this advice goes hard for comic making
    Two of my best friends and I are working on a comic, the idea is gonna be a year old in early September. Funny thing is we've been taking our time, revising the story and where we want to take it, how the characters are gonna be, world building, backgrounds, full on concepts, facial expressions, poses, etc. We have a full on Series Bible that was originally just a couple of docs half haphazardly that stemmed from the funny idea of, "hey what if these two become friends?" (we haven't gone truly in depth but we have a solid foundation now to begin working)
    We know our story will have flaws, but that isn't stopping us from trying to make it as perfect as possible and dedicating as much love as we can to it. This week we'll begin drawing out the first issue (we have written down the first few issues already dw) and while that maybe painful to read, this is something that we're very passionate about and we're determined to use this as a part of our portfolios for our dream jobs.

    • @ChrisMason_01
      @ChrisMason_01  Před dnem

      I wish you all the best! :D Passion projects are the best! I did something similar with a couple of my friends too. As long as you're putting your best foot forward then that's all that really matters imo. Thanks for the comment! Im glad this also has some overlap with making comics!

    I come from a writing experience. And I will say it makes the actual novel part of this thing a lot less intimidating. So I guess some advice I'd give to people if you've never written a full chaptered story from start to finish ((Just meaning a full rough draft, not published even)), start there. Do that until the formula of writing is second nature. Not only can those become visual novels later (If you want a kinetic story to start off) or they can become the basis of an idea later, but it gives you a foundation story understanding. I've already seen so many people just.. use anime as example of stories they wanna write but they kind of forget a lot of those sell you on flashy animations or fan service. Visual novels don't tend to have quite the same freedom as that lol.

    • @ChrisMason_01
      @ChrisMason_01  Před měsícem

      Thats such a great tip as well. I agree. Having a basis for the story structure goes a long way. And I’m glad you touched on the medium itself as well. It’s so important to know the medium you’re writing for. thanks for sharing!

      Do you have any recommendations of books or videos on how to plan a story? I have trouble actually coming up with a plot. I normally just have a jumble of really cool ideas but don’t know how to flesh them out to an actual story.

    It appears~~~~~~~~~~ that I didn't hear about you until now because I live under a rock! Nice video! I can see this helping quite a lot of people!
    And I hear you about perfection paralysis, and about eventually reaching a point where you didn't want that to stop you!
    But I think, in a way, it was good for me - personally - to go through that phase of perfection paralysis, because it gave me time to grow as a person, writer, and artist. I was still figuring out a lot of things about myself, figuring out what stories I wanted to tell, finding my art style, and just growing up... but when I was ready, I was suddenly like "I'm sick of not releasing anything! Let's start a project for real!"
    But until that point, I think I really wasn't ready. Loads of revising ideas and redrawing characters to find my art style, and so on... when you're ready, I think you'll reach a point where you realize you're ready! :) And at that point, don't worry too much! Create, and put things out there! ^^
    Sort of like a chick breaking out of an egg, you'll realize you don't need to be in the egg, anymore. Even if you did need to be in it for a while, to grow, now that you've grown, the only way to go is forward.
    Yeah. :)

    • @ChrisMason_01
      @ChrisMason_01  Před měsícem +1

      That's a really good analogy😲yeah I can totally see some people eventually just snapping out of perfection paralysis like yourself! I guess I was comparing that with folks I knew or myself since I've mainly only ever seen people holding out on projects to polish or revise or rework into oblivion😅lol. Thanks for commenting! I will check out some of your projects now!🔥

      @@ChrisMason_01 Thanks! And yeah, I know some people like that, too! I keep saying things like "I know you want to have everything figured out before hand, but after you have a general plan, you have to start, otherwise you'll keep trying to perfect it and never write a page!" I certainly understand. :)

    The difficulty I've had is in the scripting stages, I've even solodeving a game and the overarching story has been easy pz, but the individual interactions are h a r d

    • @ChrisMason_01
      @ChrisMason_01  Před měsícem

      yeah tbh, I’m not super experienced enough in writing a vast amount of solo interactions, but what I try to do is make them character/personality specific that shows off a side of the character that wouldn’t be seen to the player otherwise. this usually would incentivize learning about the characters individually(atleast for me😅) hope this helps!

      Learning Digital Art can be tough but there are a ton of beginners tutorials on how to do it on youtube! I have a couple tutorials on how to make visual novel sprites specifically if you're trying to make those as well! Id say to start off with a free art peogram like Paint tool sai or firealpaca. Id use procreate if you are using an ipad. Those are pretty beginner friendly.
