Good point, I ve had em fall, because I use just a bar sometimes (no frame) Richard you deserve a Medal for your "Banking Frame" sooo good, so much better to have bees feeding Virgins than me too!!
Another great video Richard. I have just converted over to the Nicot system on the back of watching your videos. Used the Nicot cage & queen laid it up. Went back 4 days later to find the bees had eaten or moved every egg! Luckily had my grafting tool & had to graft 44 larvae on the apiary floor. Only 24 accepted so more practice required...
Thanks Richard, another great informative video, bees are amazing, building the queen cell from the cup that fell between frames. I presume your queens still get mated even if you mark them when they are virgins.
I just love your videos and I showed this to my 4yr old son and he said, “the blue dot is the queens crown” 😂 It’s important to gain knowledge and I thank you for sharing everything you know. This channel is also educating my son as well as myself and it’s extremely important.
Richard Noel Your videos aren’t bad. He hears a lot of bad language from the outside world and doesn’t repeat it 🤞🏻. However, he’s told a lot of people about the queen bee and he found a dead bee in a spiders web and we had to bury it in the backyard.
getting ready to try my third graft. first, i missed a queen cell. second they drew out 34 of 40, i was happy. only half hatched, not enough jelly, finisher swarmed before they were done, and left no queen below the excluder. I learn every time, thanks so much
Great Richard, full on!🙂 im running through the days as well. Lots! of swarming in middle germany this year wich i have to manage wisely by total brood removal and putting the bees back after hatching etc to still get the summer flow and doing lots of nucs for next season. Would be very interested how you manage swarming?! Regarding putting queens into nucs. I always try to put the queencells into the nucs one day before they hatch after checking under light if its a living queen in the cell. So i dont have to wait and break cells and the queen is accepted and directly fed very well wich is a great start. Just like a baby getting the first milk. I do this nicot thing around the cell to safe it from being eaten out from the side and can check a day later if it hatched properly this way. Always love your videos! Lots of good sidetipps to think about. You really got me with the pollensup😄 Wishing you loads of honey and strong healthy colonies! Greetings, Florian
Hi Florian, we had issues last year too.lots of swarming and poor hatching, this year we have turned the corner. Not much swarming and also good hatching success, however, we find it is easy to introduce a hatched virgin, as we prefer to see the queen first and mark her. after last year i had a couple of bad batches of queens that did not hatch well and subsequently decided we would always see them first! Wood wishes for your year too. Thanks for your interesting comments!
Hi Richard, I think I found a way on how to have a consistent/constant builder hive all season long. A method where you can re-stock your queen builders with frames of capped brood, knowing they are free of any larva stages and always desperately queenless. I will upload a video shortly. Regards, Colin
thanks, Colon, look forward to seeing it, however I've seen similar and in my mind, this works great, but it doesn't kill it the hopelessly queenlessness each time. they draw up cells but perhaps not as vigorously as they could?
Could you please tell us what kind of food should be provided to the fertilized queens If they are kept in the incubator's queens storehouse? Thank you.
hi Richard In your experience for how long you kept the queens in the incubator before introductions? How long you think is ok to bank them in a queenless hive. Thank you
the grey boxs u put u put the queens in would u consider selling them,i have made one out of foam its a bit diffy THANKS Bruce, Australia great videos ,watching them very day thanks again Richard
I ripped the guts out of a $50 eBay chicken incubator and modified it to fit in a 5F Nuc it works a treat I can incubate 3 bars at a time and bank 1 bar, the internals take up a frames worth of space but it’s good enough for me. We’ve just about finished feeding ready for winter, another 150 bodies to wax dip and paint and a couple thousand plastic frames to wax and a couple thousand timber ones to wash and rewire, aaaaarrrrgh oh the joys of being a keeper huh 🤔
Another great video Richard thanx I'd also like to know where you get those rapid round feeders from as the one's from China are rubbish and bee's cant get over the inner ring to access the syrup cheers Dan from Aussie land 🍻👍
Hi, we buy ours from a supplier in France. if you want to email me I can send you a link. It's on the catalogue for Le rouge Apiculteur, its a big beekeeping company in France. you can buy them in the uk, I have a feeling they are made by Nicot!
Hi Richard very good cover for most of the questions .Can you tell me if you know about the fresh air flow in the incubator . i converted an wine chiller and obviously is quite sealed . and a second question how do you keep your records written or digital ? By the way great videos. Keep them coming . :) Regards Andy
Hi Andy, Fresh air is a good question, I suppose I've never really thought about it. but on my incubator there is very small slots for slight ventilation that does allow some exchange of air. Bees have to breathe too, but they would not be suffocated even in a tiny box so I think you will be ok.
Richard, my queens run at lightening speed and are a sod to try to pick up in the field. I'm currently using a queen marking cage. Any tips on picking up a "runny" queen.?
Hi Paul, use the wings wherever possible, I agree its never easy to do, that's one of the reasons why we hatch out and introduce live virgins. they are already marked.
Cindy Dotson ... you looking at eggs I think... but young queens don't lay proper at the beginning, they need some days to become a professional. they at first lay 2 to 5 eggs in the same cell and mostly not centered.
Hi from Greece Richard, I would like to ask you if you have find a way to keep the queens alive for 2-3 days in the incubator after their borning. I have an incubator that I have made it, works perfectly but I can't keep the queens alive more than a day. Thanks in advance Pantelis from Creta Greece
Hi good question. check you give them a tiny drop of honey in a corner of the cage but not enough so they get covered in it. also, give them 1 drop of water on the cage each day. Check also your humidity levels and the amount of airflow in the incubator. I find my top shelf has too much draft from the fan, so when they are born, I move then down to the bottom shelf. Get them in a nurse bee colony (one that is queenless as soon as they are hatched) that gives the best survival rate. good luck.,
I feed my own honey, my sprong honey , but some use royal jelly, some use a mix of the two, but make sure its a tiny amount in the cage where the queen wont get covered in it!
Hi Kevin, I've heard of this problem, it is usually because they think the eggs are foreign and try to clean them up. I don't use the Nicot cup laying cage because of this, as its just easier for me to graft. a friend of mine says he keeps his cage in the hive all summer and just adds the cups. this may help you!
I'm grafting here in Charlotte and had some luck. I got 20 out of 30 started in 3 days. I checked back to see if they were capped on day 6 and the bees reduced my 20 to 2. What happened? What a bummer. I will graft again but where did I go wrong? Ideas :) I used a 6 frame poly queenless builder hive to graft into.
very difficult to say but in most cases, the starter was not up to good strength. I have been there many times. it can be a virgin made her way into the box? check with a screened box and shake all the colony through to check before you graft again!
Thanks mr rich. I did another queen rearing and had better luck. Don't you love how nature makes an ass of us. We bee keepers keep learning how much we don't know. Yay! hahaah
Like I say in the video, one or two drops of mineral water or de chlorinated water through the cage twice a day. Honey if Royal Kelly in a tiny amount where she can only drink it, not get covered in it.
