In this video, I use the Soldano Astro, Victory The Super Kraken, Mezzabarba Trinity & Mesa Badlander in some examples of how to make your amp sound better. - Zábava
Because I suck
This was it for me when I first got my ENGL Ironball I hated it compared to my 5150 and Invective. It was because I sucked and ENGL Ironball is a super tight modern sounding amp that doesn't mask mistakes at all. Really need great playing to make it sound good. I kept it and now that I improved a bit I love it.
Lots of good advice here. I have a few overdrive pedals just so I have options whenever I add a new amp to my collection. My Maxon OD808X is probably my favorite of the bunch, though. It has more output than a regular OD808, but it also has less of a mid hump, so it tightens up the low end really well without thinning out the tone. It also has this high end bite to it that just sounds so good.
I have two lunchbox valve heads - the Orange Jim Root and the PRS MT15. Both have a 7W mode, but even then they suck so bad in the house at neighbourhoods-friendly volumes. I bought a TwoNotes Torpedo a few days ago, what a difference! -20dB output really helps, allowing me to turn the master volume up a bit more. Now I’m using my amps a lot more instead of relying on plugins or a modeller.
Pickups and speakers are half of your tone. I’m with you.
Omg you just made me love the tone with the Astro with the Mud Killer. I havent heard anything I like with it until that. Huge difference
About the pickup thing. I always dislike when people say: this and this doesn't matter. In my opinion, every single aspect of the signal chain matters. Sure things like speakers may matter more than other things sound wise, but in the end it's every single aspect of the chain matters.
Dang right. Good advice!
EQ is the real secret with amps IMO. With an EQ in the loop, you can basically altar any amp to sound however you want. I have the Source Audio EQ2 and love the shit out of it. It's a 10-band EQ that is midi controllable with 128 presets and you can change the bands to any frequency you wish. The only real drawback is you need to use the Application on your PC or phone to get the most out of the pedal but once you have programmed a bunch of EQ presets, you can switch between them easily on the pedal itself or map them to midi channels to correspond with amp channel switching.
For EQ in the loop I use a parametric. With that I can target the specific frequencies I want to boost/cut and control the bandwidth of each one as well. Since my amp is rack mounted a rack EQ made sense. The EQ I use allows me to enable each frequency section individually, so I can target what I need to fix and leave the rest untouched.
Awesome video I'm a Badlander main right now I'm using it with a diezel herbert overdrive and an EQ when I'm not using the quad cortex. Just ordered the Centura should be here next week can't wait to check it out
They all sounded pretty good to me, I know it's a bit rare to settle on one amp as the do it all, but it is possible to use only one amp as the foundational building block for a preferred cab setup or a bit of pedal enhancement to achieve the sweet spot as the sonic perfection for any player, there are lots of factors that affect the great tone hunt, I've used conventional amps for decades including combo's and great cabs etc, I'm more of the mind now as I've got older that most of the larger heads and cabs although fantastic aren't required because of their size/weight-bulk etc, not to mention that a lot of bar/pub venues have smaller stages and volume restrictions in most instances, these day's I use a small inexpensive multi unit/modeller and it's to me actually better overall regarding tone personalisation, cheaper on upkeep/servicing previously etc, it sounds like and better in most instances than the stuff I was using previously by way of amps and cabs for sure, I'm very constantly being hounded by friends and fellow players to reveal my tweaks, I can only politely giggle a lot and run like hell avoiding the asking, I know I've got it right, I knew it was right when I hid my entire setup in dummy cabs when live including a dummy famous amp head containing my modeller in it behind the grill.
Finding the personal holy grail tone only took me around 30 years to develop it.
I got a new amp a couple of years ago, which I still have and love, that I used a Boss SD-1 on and it killed way too much low end. The MXR Custom Badass Modified O.D. was recommended and was much better. I also used a FET boost for a while. Now I am using a clone of the Friedman Buxom Boost. I use it with the EQ switched off. This boost works best for me with this amp. So I definitely agree that you have to match the boost to the amp.
My first amp was a Peavey Bandit back in the early 90’s. Literally any modern amp sounds 100x better than that thing 😂
Thanks for commenting. that was exactly what my first amp was... a Peavey Bandit 65. good times LOL
Just got the ODD box........Love it !
Awesome!! Congratulations
What Boost drive would you recomand to use on diferent Amps? i have ENGL, AMP1 Iridium and a Blackstar and using Boss sd1 but i dont like it so much. i am considering Warrm Audio ODD, would itr work well with my amps? Tks a lot for the videos and all the info and effort you put in. 🤘🤘🤘
I'd try the Warm Audio ODD Box
I stick with the mud killer and use it for every amp that I can because of its Channel switching capabilities ...on stage I need to switch from clean to distortion and I don't want to have to turn off and on a Overdrive... I usethe Lonely Ghost pedal for my Reverb And delay with Boost.... and yes like you have in your video I use a mxr 10 band in the effects Loop with every amp I play I will never play without it
Thanks!
Thank you!!
I did it with the blackstar stage series 212 60 watt conbo hated it as 1st since ive experimented with od and so.on its came.around but dont touch my ENGL alot of your advice has helped so much
Thanks for commenting. I'm glad you are enjoying the videos. so good to hear this kind of feedback. Much appreciated 🙏
Jarod, thanks for pairing the Badlander with the Odd Box. Although I preferred it to the Mud Killer, it wouldn't have saved me from selling my Badlander. It is a cool amp, but not the right palette for me to paint with right now. You saved me some $$$. Thanks you da man!
My pleasure. that's what my channel is all about...giving you the best information I can so that you can make the best, informed decisions that work best for you
This video was freekin great. That kraken sounds awesome. Had my heart set on a Freedman small box but now I dunno. They're way different sounds so maybe I have to get one of each.
Thanks for commenting, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. yeah, that Kraken is never gonna leave my studio
Another thing that can make a huge difference in tone is the pots and wiring in the guitar. Probably not an issue on top end stuff but I bought an Epiphone ES335 for 100 bucks at a pawn shop and .....got it home and it sounded like a steemin turd. Slapped some good pick ups in it and it sounded way better but still not right so I took it to my tech and he suggested pots, wiring, etc. When I got it back holly crap, what a difference.... awesome, and yes I do play metal on that thing and it sounds great.
Great point!!
you can also try the EQD Plumes for the Badlander as it has 3x more output than a TS9 and cuts way less low end and it's only $99.
I recently purchased an evh stealth 100 based on your vids and I wasn't disappointed - especially the blue channel. I find that it sounds great to my ears with a fishman modern ceramic equipped guitar without a boost. However when I switched to an emg or passive I found it was missing something. Thankfully a boost pedal fixed that. First i tried a maxon OD808 and that was OK, but then I took a risk and purchased a boss SD-1 and that was better. So the question is what is your preferred boost for the evh stealth 100?
Recently bought the same amp for the same reason. Try the ODD Box and play between the US and UK modes.
Awesome, good to hear. in my opinion, the best pedal for the stealth is the warm audio odd box, I use it in UK mode. it sounds full, aggressive and amazing. and the feel is unbeatable
thanks for the replies. So you both recommend the odd box. I think that is a safe bet then. I'll grab one and see how it goes. Thanks for the help.
So I picked up an odd box. First impressions are positive. I tried it through an emg81 equipped guitar and liked the UK mode and the popular dialing. When I tried it with my ormsby hype gtr equipped with a moderate output "nunchucker" pickup, I found the US mode better and dialing in some gain as well. Cant wait to try it in a rehearsal situation in a few days.
Thanks Jarrod for another video with great advice. I've been watching your channel now for a couple of years and always enjoy it. I have a quick question for you. I just got a Mesa Boogie JP-2C and love it! I was thinking of trying out a boost pedal with it, just for shit's and giggles. What boost pedal do you recommend that works well with it. I was considering the Wylde audio MXR or maybe the Electric eye mud killer. Also I have a Carvin Legacy Steve Vai amp I'd use the boost pedal with too. Thanks Again!
Thanks so much for commenting and for the kind words. I really appreciate that.
And congratulations on the JP-2C!
I think the mud killer would be a good choice for that amplifier if I remember correctly. The grid slammer is also a good choice, especially when you crank the tone knob all the way up on that pedal.
Because the tone stack in that amplifier is active, you can actually try cranking the treble all the way up and lower the base and you can get the amp really tight by doing that as well. I always boost it and then adjust the treble accordingly to get that extra little bit of bite and great feel. give that a try and let me know what you think.
Thanks Jarrod Shall do. Appreciate the quick response, I'll pick a mud killer up. I'll also try tone knob trick. Honestly this amp is so good no matter what you do it has good tone. I guess it depends on your pickups and dialing it in according to what guitar your playing. @@TONEWARSgearshow
@@zensutraguitar My pleasure. let me know how the new pedal works out. I'm actually covering your comment in Monday's Riffs and Responses video. I'll be trying a few overdrives with my JP to and sharing the results
That's awesome I'll watch it after work!

Hey Jarod great video and good advice 👍
Just wondering if the Friedman golden pearl is comparable to the odd box. I remember you saying it was a good match for the Badlander without sucking out the low end!
Thanks and keep those videos coming they are really useful 👍👍👍
Thanks for commenting.. I prefer the odd box over the golden pearl because the odd box gives the amp a really nice solid punch . The golden pearl, in comparison, can be a bit softer
@@TONEWARSgearshow ok thanks 👍
wish you would have camera on your pedals. would love to see the different od you use
Thanks for the suggestion, I'm actually working on a solution for that
I used to be one of those guys who would say " I have a two thousand amp, I shouldn't have to boost it with a $70 BOSS SD-1!"
Now I know better
I have a good friend who is a touring musician and he absolutely refuses to use a boost with his Marshall JVM410JS
So his live tone is flubby and his solos get buried in the mix
All it would take is an SD-1...
Thanks for commenting. I'm so glad you discovered how awesome boost pedals are..
Hopefully, your friend will see the light someday
If a valve amp, replace and rebias new power tubes. Tubes wear after many hours of play.
Hey jaraod is the odd box by warm audio the pedal your tslking about 17:51
Yes. It's amazing
What Lundgren do u have? I have M6 and The One. Best i ever tried.
I have the M7 pickup in the bridge
“Helping boost Karens out of wet paper bags since…”
"You listen with your hands". Sorry I couldn't hear you with my gloves on 😂
But seriously I get what you're saying and totally agree.
Haha Guitar players are the only weirdos that are capable of doing that. it's a special power we all have😅
I'm in the same boat with the Badlander, what a bad call I made with that one. With the gain and bass maxxed it just doesn't have enough low end or gain. It records really well though as the bass is largely filtered out on YT. But in a room, it sounds like someone castrated a Mark series amp and gave it "Rectifier" aesthetics to try to sell it to the masses. You basically have to spit-roast it with an OD in the front and an EQ in the back, and at that point, it's not even the same amp anymore, might as well buy something else. The EQ pedal did make a difference here, it's just a shame that Mesa didn't give it a little more low end; I always say, better to have slightly more than you need, rather than not enough.
Yeah I think Mesa overdid it with sculpting the Badlander ...it could use a little more gain and some more low end and fullness. maybe they'll make a revision of this one and fix those issues. That would be nice to see
Do you prefer the super kraken or the soldano Astro 20
That's a tough one. let me give it some thought
One idea would be to get the 10 band eq instead of a boost and use it in front of the amp as a customisable boost. That way the one pedal can be changed to match each different amp. Then use the gain to boost to taste
Thanks for commenting. I actually do a video about that a while back. that is such an awesome concept.
An EQ pedal works great as a boost and it's very customizable.
I hate it cause it’s too tight, damn 5150iii.
Savage Jarrod is my favourite type of Jarrod
Haha I have to let it out sometimes 😁
@@TONEWARSgearshow good. Let it flow. Boost Karen's have ruined the lives of many.
Jarod, as a boost apostle, it's time for you to try Walrus Ages. It's the juiciest overdrive on the market in my opinion and it has a MID and BASS (needs to be at minimum usually) control. If you haven't done so already ofc.
Thanks for commenting. I'll have to look into that
Pickups matter. Put sonic ecstasy in my RG 550 so much better over stock.
Love those pickups!! My favorite
Back in the 90's... I bought a brand new USA Peavey 5150 "script" head. Paid around $700 for it.
Took it home, played with it for 2 hours. HATED THAT THING. Absolutely hated it.
It was ear-splittingly LOUD. Like loud enough to kill me. And sounded HORRIBLE.
Took it back to the music store the next day! 😆
We have all definitely been there with certain amplifiers.
I have about 30 amps and I like them all not cuz it's on your bench the one I hated the most and actually sold is the Mesa Badlander then I ended up buying a mini rectifier and that thing blows the Badlander away to my ears but everybody's different
LMAO
6:20 🙈🤭😆🤣🤦♂️🤘
I had the Driftwood and sold it to keep my Badlander. i run a silver archer and blues driver in front of my badlander.
Thanks for commenting. I think the driftwood sounded good but it was really really loose. you almost had to double boost it just to tighten it up. I wish they would fix that.
I had one a while and ended up selling it too.
Badlander? i have the 25 version and i love it no regret, just use a Gridslammer and a Mesa cab it just sounds great. i have a long list of OD and boost u name it. but gridslammer just do it for me obviously its voice for the brand amp. anyway its just me, i sometimes use MxR 77 badass modified man its like Gojira. lol
Thanks for commenting. yes, I love the grid slammer as well. it allows more low end in the front of the amplifier when you use it. that's a great option
"Don't let a studio engineer tell you a pickup doesn't matter". Hhmmm, I wonder which other CZcamsr that's aimed at looll 😂
😅🤣😂
I see you still have the bad lander. You ended up liking it?
Thanks for commenting. I'm still on the fence with this amplifier to be honest.
@@TONEWARSgearshow yeah for sure me too, I feel like some days it sounds amazing and other days it leaves a lot to be desired.
@@oscargomez5537 That's exactly how I feel about it
I hate my
MK V 90
SLO 30
Revv Gen 120 MK3
Mini Nightmare
I like my EVH Stealth 50 and AXE FX3 and my Synergy setup is ok too. 🤷🏻♂️
I wasn't a fan of the MK V 90 either.
I feel that way about my amp 1 iridium. For 800$ i should have bought the 5150 icon
What don’t you like about the Iridium?
I wish I lived where I could buy an Amp 1 Iridium.
@nicolasmtremblay ...sometimes when I turn it on the thing sounds like flubby shit, and I have all the overdrive, eqs, ect. Its a 50/50 shot weather or not it's gonna sound as it should, which isn't really as good as all the videos brag it up to be. Save your money and buy something else. For 800$ you can get a katana mk2 2x12 and a decent guitar and a good guitar cable and have an awesome setup.
@TheMasonator777 save your money, buy something else trust me.
@@michaelmitchell5909 I wonder if yours had an issue… the nano-tube could have had a problem. I have a Katana and I do like it… I also have a MK V 25… I think I like the Katana almost as much for sound and way better for reliability.
I bought a new head and it sounds great without my pedals but , all my favorite pedals with my american amps sounds like shit with this british monster....oh well any one have a recommendation for drive pedals for a rockerverb?
What pedals have you tried?
The ODD Box is what made my Badlander the least favorite amplifier in my collection, to right up with my Stealth as my favorite!🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
It’s like tone is a hoagie, it’s a sum of its parts. Changing one ingredient can change everything. Some of the signal chain has a larger percentage of the tone equation but fuck up that last 5% and you will hate the whole thing.
Agreed!!
I have hated every amp I have ever owned or played through. So far, no matter how much I spend on an amp, they never make me sound better or more skilled. This is obviously the fault of the amp designers. Maybe I need to try different tubes....But I bet they are all defective as well.
Bahaha
I've found that I play much faster and cleaner with mogami cables😅🤣😂
@TONEWARSgearshow , brother, don't get me started on cables. I've tried them all, and it's the same thing as the amps. They just don't make me sound any better. So I switched to wireless. Which also didn't make me sound any better. But at least now I can get far enough away from the amp that I can't hear my crap playing......
Gosh darn boost karens again lol
Haha they're everywhere 😅
I have 72 amps. I hate none of them. They are superior to everything analog because they are LIne 6 Creations and they are digital. We all know digital is far superior to "problematic tube amps" in every way. Even tube guys like Dave Friedman are building digital creations because they are superior to analog in every way. Even the new Soldano Astro that everyone loves has a digital backend. Soldano admitted that DIgital is the future and the easiest way to add versatility to technology from 1912. Mike Soldano is the GREATEST amp builder and he recognized that Digital is the way forward. Dave Friedman is starting to make more and more digital products. A significant part of the Wampler line is digital. Digital is the future. Tubes are the past. IF I were to get bored with amp 59, I could try amp 64. IF 64 were not to click with me, then I could goto amp #8. When I get tired of #8 I could goto amp #11. And I don't have to worry about burning my house to the ground. One of the 72 is going to melt my face or inspire me to write the next hit. All contained within a black enclosure and priced less than a very basic tube amp. LINE 6 for the win. Metallica went digital. Megadeth went digital. John Petrucci will go digital when he learns to spell it.
You trolling? 😂😂😂😂
@@hyperbolekid NOPE. 100% serious. Facts are Facts. Do your research. The truth now comes in a digital form. Look into it.................
Soldano astro has a Digital back end? Hmmm is it a solid state power section with a tube preamp?
@@crock2434 How do you think they incorporate IRs and silent recording? Asking for a friend?
Bahaha
Are you talking about an amp or a woman?🤣
