Thank you for showing this. Alway excellent preview.
Thanks đ
Nicely done and thank you for that! btw what is the musical selection please?
My music in this is off my editing software Wondershare Filmora.
The mini 2 has surprisingly good range! Surpassed the pro by a large margin.
Itâs definitely not a drone to pass up just because thereâs a newer model.
@@QCGUY I agree, to the responsible recreation pilot without the need for sensors and long flight time the Mini 2 is an incredible bargain.
â@@jaybomb5022, I have three of them and I fly the Heck of them !!!
I hope the battery was recoverable. Nice controlled landing. Nice to see that on "0"% battery you still have a minute or two to search for a nice clear spot. đ đ
Charged and working fine. Unlike Autel DJI knows how to add reserves in there battery programming. 0% is 8% left to burn easy đ

The A2S is hard to beat đ
HI Chris - superb comparison! Question if and when DJI allows the new controller to fly the Air2S, would you recommend getting it to fly the Air2S?
So far yes I would for sure đđ»
Great video. My Mini 3 is do in on Monday but now I might return if for an Air2s. QUESTION: Do you think the range would have improved if you were willing to fly it at 800 feet instead of 400? Thanx Mr. QC
Iâm sure that would help đ

I have heard on good authority that Chris's dog is part 107 certified.

Hey Chris! Nice to see you again. I like your videos and for me you are one of the most that I trust regarding your reviews. Nice comparison video. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful weekend! đ
Thank you đ
Thanks chirs again for a great and honest review as away

So, in the normal flying range of most pilots, either one should be fine, but one will likely stay in the air longer, and then it is the features you want or need and how well they work.
Nice vid Chris. Glad you were not over the lake.
Thanks đ
Thanks for performing and publishing this test Chris. I'm surprised you maintained signal behind that thick treeline close to where they were launched.
I had to dance around a lot to do it with the M3 but it managed

I saw your video. Glad you are enjoying it âïž
Correction I saw Darnells video đ
Thank you for this video. You have verified exactly what I was thinking. I love to fly the Mini 3 but the Mini 2 is better suited for helping me find my cattle without a weak signal.
If thatâs your main use then your more then good sticking with the mini 2.
Awesome flights. Love it when you push them.
Thanks đ
Great test Chrisđđ»đđ»
Thanks
Wow brilliant test QC Guy you certainly know how to push the limits I applaud you for doing so.
Thereâs pushing the limits and being stupid but thank you very much. I enjoy both đ
I enjoyed the new video format side by side. Nice emergency landing and recovery too. The thing about range is that your control and video can often out fly your battery's ability to bring you home. Herbert's neighbor's dog is doing well on the sticks, even with no thumbs.
đ
Great comparison Chris. You nailed it on the flight path. I agree with you on the antennas on the controllers. I think the antennas design and setup on the drones is what makes the signal strength an issue. The music was superb!đ€Ș
Thanks John
Has the signal strength gotten better over time with updates like some though5 it might or no?
Not sure about people that had the biggest issues like Canada but nothing different here.
Very interesting. Your video seems to confirm RC all the concerns about signal issues on the Mini 3. The wind performance is a huge surprise. From your experience is the Mini 2 more stable but the Mini 3 is stronger in the wind?
Iâm going more stable and better in wind for the mini 3.
I got the mini 2 and a spark. I'm debating on my next drone either be a fugly mini 3 or a big air 2 without the s...which would u prefer? I want range and battery life more then anything. If the mini 3 is like my mini 2 it sucks in the wind.
Mini 3 is better in the wind but I canât steer anyone away from the A2 or A2S if those are the choices with any mini quads.
Thanks for taking the time to conduct this little experiment. I understand the Mini 2 has been great in terms of range but for all other things, it's obvious the Mini 3 Pro has the edge over its predecessor
Both are pretty great either way đđ»
Range for both is respectable. The Mini 2 has the edge since probably it has a more mature firmware. M3P still has a lot of growing up to do but I'm confident that DJI is on top of it like they always are. I also notice better wind resistance for the Mini 3 Pro which is a very good thing as well.
Hopefully it continues to get better with age then đ
Spot on assessment đđđ
Thanks đ
Thank you for the no BS, honest video. Unfortunately, youtube has turned into one huge shill festival. Honest reviews are as rare as unicorns now. Much appreciated.
Thanks for the comment. I totally agree and itâs getting worse. Puppets for the product!
I buy most of my stuff but what I get for free to review I usually call burning bridges because I look more for the negatives than the positives and try to give ways to deal with them. Thanks again for taking the time to stop by and drop that comment. âïž
Agree with you on VLoS well said! Range is limited by battery for safety?
I donât think so no
Thanks for giving information about no difference between RC with screen and without. Bcs some guys disappointed us that RC with screen has law signal
Great video Chris, I think it's the lack of front landing legs/antenna that makes that lack of distance although I could be wrong
Itâs a different antenna type so yes anything is possible . Thanks
Nice comparison. I just got a Mini 3 and have only flown it a few times, but so far, the distance has been OK for me. Quality, flight stability, and overall features are great! I can totally understand how some people are frustrated with the (seemingly) weaker signal but for me, 2-3km would be more than enough. If I need to go farther, I think I'd pickup a Mavic 3 with the Pro controller (mainly because I eventually want one anyhow :)) But for now, 1 - 1.5 km seems to be working well for me.
It's interesting that in Canada, mRPAS are *not* subject to the VLOS regulations that apply to sRPAS. You can also *technically* fly above 121m/400ft with a mRPAS in Canada but you are still subject to 900.06, which is basically, "use commonsense and keep people on the ground and in the air safe" or... don't fly like an asshole. So flying BVLOS could possibly be ruled unsafe, depending on context. Flying over farm fields though is probably reasonably safe. :D
so far so good but how old is your mini 2 battery and how old is your mini 3 battery ? or was is still buy in the same time ? ;)
The mini 2 battery is older from when it first came out so naturally that can be counted as a factor but ultimately wind killed the return flight.
I included that bad return but the main point is comparison of signal between the two. Thanks âïž
@@QCGUY đ
small tip! battery voltage matters more then mAh thats why at 0% you could still push it up some people call it a "reserve" this can last 30 seconds to 4 minutes.
I know this all too well but thanks for the tipâŠ
Interestingly today whilst out flying the M3 I had a forced landing at 8%.......is that normal?
Seemed a little annoying I was about 20m from myself heading back to land and it simply said "Nope, this pile of horse shit will do nicely as a landing pad" with fuel still in the tank!!
Also noticed that when it's first stating low battery alert that the obstacle avoidance seemed to stop working... but need to test it again as I could be wrong.
Any thoughts @QC GUY ?
Yes thatâs the time to fight the sticks mode that kicks in at 8%. Itâs very stupid!
Let me fly the Fuc@ing drone DJI!!!
@@QCGUY đđ€Łđ true!!
One way to think about it: The radio range matches the battery range in the III but not the II? Thanks for the demo!
Wind effects the 2 more so and I gotta remember the batteries are older on it as well.
Amazing comparison !! Luv your BVLOS disclaimer .... LoL
Always gotta explain these things đ
Type of battery use in mini2 thanks
The stock mini 2 battery naturally
Nice comparison Chris. Results speak for themselves..I flew the Mini 3 pro this morning with the DJI RC. Twice the video screen went blurry with good signal then back to normal.
Since we have talked several times there no need to comment. đ
Great test Chris. I believe that you are correct about the tuned down on the m3p range. you can only put so much in a small drone. you have to cut back on something. I think if the power was turned all the way up, equal or higher than the m2. The drone would overheat in flight on hot days like you did the range test in.
That to me would be the reason for cutting back if true or correct. đđ»
I hope it only gets better
Did u have the stronger battery in the mini3?
Good question and I forgot to mention that. It was the ultralight battery đđ»
Thanks
@@QCGUY I still prefer my mini 2, ha ha
Is it my impression or could the Mini 2's front feet be being used for the antenna, giving a better signal?
The same thing can be said of the RC-N1 controller, it has a wider area for the antenna, for me I use these drones almost every day, both the Mini 3 Pro and the Mavic 3 have better signal quality on the RC-N1 than in the DJI RC which suffers interference much more easily.
I donât think the legs with the antennas holds as cause and I I definitely donât see interference being more on one than the other but everyone flyâs in different locations so different outcomes for different people. đđ»
I still fly my mini and looks like the mini 3âs signal in long range flight could pose a problem . I love the fact that you seem to have no fear of flying long distance. Do you think range on the mini 3 would be better using the other controller. Great video Chris
Thanks but no it wouldnât as I mentioned in the video. Tried that pretty early on đđ»
I'm waiting for a refined or improved 3. 2 is gtg until then.
Nice video.
Thanks
Hey Chris. Great video. I do have a couple of questions though.
1. Has anyone taken a M3P and the new RC apart (or the old one for that matter) to see if new remote has a narrower signal beam width? I'm guessing there are other instruments that can do this, but I know I wouldn't have access to anything like that.
2. I noticed a couple things in the comparison. For one thing, the M3P had a LOT of moire. A whole lot! Any reason for that?
3. Why the big difference in colour between the 2?
4. The M2 warned about max height of 400 but appeared to let you override it by saying that you had permission to go higher. The M3P didn't seem to have such an option. Am I reading that wrong?
5. How does the M3P do when there's a building between you and the drone? Or a small section of trees, like the ones you flew over?
6. (6? Damn, sorry!) I was hoping to get a mini, but now I'm not so sure... Out of curiosity, do you have a Discord group?
Thanks for your hard work!
DM
The color and image were both set to auto and one came from a phone screen recording with the other being the controller screen recording and different dpi soooooo đ€
Thereâs controller breakdowns here on CZcams if I recall and as far as max height I donât recall getting the okay to go higher.
Good comparison- thanks. Drone recovered No buckshot in the nether regions- success!!
Amen to that! đ
Just picked up my own Mini 3 yesterday (UK) first flight a few minutes ago.
Thoughts....... even fairly close to myself felt that the signal was a bit "Jumpy" in comparison to my mini 2.
I generally fly fpv using the "Drone mask" and I must say the 1080p image back to phone was crisper which I enjoyed.
Having the sideways flight turned off was strange when out of habit I was instinctively using pitch and roll.
Very happy with the reduced noise from the M3 although I would say its easier to see in the sky than the mini 2 with its larger size.
Quite impressed with how it felt in the hand, a quality bit of kit for such an incredibly low weight.
Excellent video
Good to hear and glad you enjoy it. Yes that sideways flight is strange.
On private land I had 5000m with signal and it came home due to battery, as the wind was fairly high and i was using the RC so I don't believe there is an issue.. I also did a test with my Air2S with my RC pro and they both cut out the same places..
I love my Mighty Mouse DJI mini 2 â€ïž what a powerful mini drone . Awesome honest reviews
I canât part with my mini 2. Itâs definitely a keeper đđ»
Great comparison, well done Chris! Even though the mini 2 didnât make it back, it consistently had stronger signal strength, which for me is the preferred attribute.
Preferred over camera quality?
Yes, even over the camera quality. Iâm not a photographer nor do I post videos online. I fly strictly for fun and to explore.
Thanks đ
Love the shirt! Fly it like ya stole it! Right on!
Sorry, one more (can't help my obsessive nature) - do you give any credence to the fact that Mini 3 Pro form factor has no landing gear "legs/feet" with the arms sticking straight out? O3 calls for 4 antenna. Mini 3 signal fluctuations "seem" more sensitive to drone orientation from casual observation đ€ -antenna spread is good, but odd positioning and possibly closer to motors. I agree the "RC" -RM330 beam shape is narrower; more directionally sensitive. Your thoughts?
I give no credence to the fact whatsoever. DJI had a test version that did pretty close to what was advertised Iâm sure and then comes the problems spotted in testing where they have to rob Peter to pay Paul. Thatâs where we are now and thatâs what I believe đđ»âïž
@@QCGUY Seems reasonable đ€ I have observed some elevated sensitivity to the aircraft's orientation. Still, I'm getting "acceptable" range- (1-2 miles), considering the use cases I have for it. The Mavic 3/RC Pro is more suited to flights to Katmandu, Mini 3 is a small child you don't want wandering too far away. đ đ€Ł
Hey Chris nice video. Also please Let the pilot know he did really good flying

Welcome back Chris.
In Canada I did eventually buy the mini3 pro but prefer the color quality of the mini2 and I think that shows in your video too.
Disappointing still with the signal quality of the mini3 pro. I hope something will be done about that.
Good video, thank you.
I was thinking that exact opposite. I thought the 3 had way more punch and color than the 2. The exposure was more accurate on the return flight also.

Gday Chris,
First time on your channel. Great range test. Like the USA, AUSTRALIA uses the FCC version and Iâve been very happy with the range I get from my Mini 2. I have had a theory regarding the range on the M3P and it has to do with the antenna location on the M3P. From what Iâve seen and heard the antenna is located in the two landing skids on the rear of the M3P, where as the antennas on the MINI 2 run down the vertical landing legs. I believe this is one reason for the reduced range, not the remotes or like some try to say the fly app
Good theory đđ»
We may never know for sure but at least it still performs at a good distance. Going out as far as I do in a range test isnât something most need to do but these advertised range specs are something they should set more to the average not on the pushing the limits side of things.
DJI mini 2 has a great signal but if it has a same battery as the DJI mini 3 pro I think it can go father
I have both but I only take the risky flights with the Mini 2.
It's the far more affordable one.
Regardless of which drone won (no spoilers here) the mini 2 is a gigaChad.
I bought a mini se, but it didn't sit right that I could've bought a perfect condition dji refurbished mini 2 for $80 more, so I returned my se and bought the mini 2, which arrived today.
It's faster/more powerful, the reliability of the connection along with the range is SO much better than the SE, and the camera, despite what some reviewers say, is substantially better. The video, even on a 1080p display (properly downscaled 4k footage will basically combine 4 pixels into into 1, resulting in sharper corner) is noticeably better. More importantly than the resolution though, the mini 2s auto settings work way better for some reason.
Im almost on shock that my mini 2 only cost $380, as I said, it's a gigaChad
I think it has been the trend with tech gears and gadgets these days. Manufacturers select which aspect of the gear is most utilized by users and invest most of the upgrades there. The advantage of the Mini 3 Pro has been more about its camera specs and features and its portability, something that many users really enjoy in the drone.
Iâll agree with you there for USA users. Thereâs a bigger concern that doesnât fit with in other areas though.
Oh my, then end of the intro. Lol
You can say you did this or that on camera but still the proof has to be there so no oh my or bs from the nut gallery. lol haha lol đ
I was very close to ordering the DJI Mini 3 Pro... BUT I will wait until the very serious range issue is resolved. It will be interesting to see how this obvious issue is resolved. Hopefully, it can be fixed with a Firmware Update; If not, DJI may have to issue a revised version of the drone...
I mean I don't see how miles worth of range is an issue really. The reality is none of my dji drones get over 2 miles of range in my experience.
Sounds like a very weak reason not to get a Mini Pro 3. You shouldn't be flying it too far anyway.
@@busterhoodstar4447, it's simple; the advertised range is 12km/7.5m. If you're content/satisfied paying for a drone that doesn't perform as advertised, that's your substandard prerogative. Who are you to tell me I 'shouldn't be flying that far anyway?" I'll tell you who... NOBODY. You & your ilk should spend more time worrying about how/where you fly your drones & less time about others...
@@jetsetjoey Yeah, I'm content. I didn't buy it for the range. I bought it to be able to power it up quickly and capture video within quickly with the remote that has a built-in screen. For close up captures. That's what I bought for.
I have better drones than the Mini Pro 3 that are bigger and more powerful. I don't rely on just one drone. I wish Autel had made a drone this size with a built-in screen remote this size. But they didn't, so Dji got my money this time.
Line of site. There's a common sense reason for it. I'm not bashing anyone for not following this. I'm bashing the ones who complain about the range. Because the rule is LINE OF SITE.
Shut up about it. You're complaining about something you're not really authorized to do.
@@jetsetjoey dude unless you live in the desert you aren't getting 7.5 miles with any dji consumer grade drone. My mini 3 gets the exact same range where I fly than my original Mavic and air 2 did. Trees, competing signals, elevation and air density all have a major effect on range. With all I get about 1 mile of range. In an open area with less restricting parameters I've gotten 2.5 miles and no more. All of these claims are not realistically attainable.
I noticed the mini 2 was at max altitude for a lot of the return trip in the wind as the mini three was at a lower altitude, which definitely played a factor in it not being able to return all the way to the home point.
Return trip had nothing to do with the purpose of the video. Range and signal strength but you are correct about the hight difference. I knew the outcome already prior to this flight but being higher had its reason. đđ»
But on the original controller, you can put the Yagi-uda 5.8ghz antenna for more range. (Yes they work)

Good to see your face Chris! I have had nothing but problems with every DJI that I have ever owned. It is impressive đđ»
droneXfactor did a comparison with all three DJI controllers , standard and both RC Pro's and the results were very similar with all three controllers. That said the range issue is definitely base on the drone it's self and not the controller. I have always been impressed at what the Mini 2 can do........ Good flight comparison on you part and you didn't get shot at.......
Yes itâs definitely coming from the quad and I feel good in my assessment of that. đđ»
I have been flying over 10 years and I didnât get into flying drones so I could fly in my backyard. I also do range tests
When the mini 2 received the first strong wind warning I have had similar problems and tested the drone when in high winds reduce your altitude by at least 100 feet this will help the drone avoid strong wind gusts. Also I have found that in the evening after 6pm the winds are usually not as strong unless itâs been storming or getting ready to. But those are the best times for range testing on calmer days.
Well, no matter which drone is better, the bottomline here is that these drones have performed impressively to be able to reach such distance.
YesâŠ.one just needs a scope with crosshairs so I can accurately point it at the drone is all. đ
Wooowđ€đŒđđ€
At least you got it back ,other then that the Mini * did pretty good im thinking the battery you were using used more then the Mini *
Definitely a factor to consider for sure.
I got a Mini 3 Pro & was doing some testing, both around the community in my small town, & then again, along the seashore; in town, it varied widely depending on obstructions & ofc, with communication interference, but with trees, houses, cellphone towers, etc. I think I got maybe, ~1, no more than 2 miles at best.
Along the seashore, I made sure that the wind was blowing onshore, so if something went awry, the drone would likely come down inshore rather than to a salty death.
So, along the shoreline, in a very rural area with only a strip of beachfront homes around the launch area, in 1 direction, I got to ~5 miles & in the other direction, ~4 miles, before the low battery RTH engaged.
I didn't have either the screen or drone recording going, & I did leave the sensors on & I flew at the normal speed. I used the RC controller, the 1 with the built-in screen, & the +battery for both tests.
As to the flight altitude for both, I flew at the maximum allowed in my area, close to 400' (100 meters).
As to the absolute altitude possible that I was able to fly, I claim The Fifth, but let me say that the drone will fly to its maximum rated height as described in the Specs for the USA market.
Comparing the 2 DJI models, I've had conflicting results as to just where the Mini 3 Pro's antennas are located in the drone & how many there are, & I am wondering if the basic layout for the Mini 2 & the Mini 3 Pro are the same.
I'm also wondering if in your test of the Mini 2, what battery were you using?
Regardless, I think that I'm happier with the Mini 3 Pro, although it's my 1st drone, so I have no comparison, but I'd rather have my drone RTH due to loss of signal, than not make it back at all.
Perhaps there was a difference in wind strength between your 2 tests, but I noticed that your Mini 2 seemed to start out with less total battery time indicated, which is why I asked about the type of battery you used in your Mini 2.
Thanks for posting your video!
The main purpose of the video isnât whatâs better, what goes farther or one being on newer or older batteries.
My main goal is showing the signal strength between the two in the same location, same timeframe and flight path. Both are fine quads and both have there strengths depending on user needs and expectations. Thanks đ
Hi Chris !
đ
Get an Apple tag and stick it on the drone to locate it if it goes âghostâ
It's not about who flew longest but rather who got home safe and sound LOL
It wasnât about either of those but yes good to get home safe and sound. Adventures are more fun sometimes as well. đđ»
I took the mini 3 up out of my back yard and got 2 miles with no problem
Wonderful đ
Good thing there are no crop dusters in North America
Interesting test to be fair the only reason the (cough) didn't make it back was the close to 400ft you flew it back, with strong winds, if you'd had flown well below 200ft it probably would have made it.
Good test though, shows the difference clearly between the Mini 3 Pro and Mini 2.
I was looking at options to upgrade my original Mavic Mini, which to be fair still does everything I need my drone to do, I considered the Mini 3 but I have no need for obstacle avoidance, that's OK for a novice pilot but it just becomes an annoyance, I have no need for vertical drone footage either etc
I also considered the Avata but the noise of that thing just makes it attract attention and the last thing I want is a 'karen' complaining I'm annoying her peaceful walk in the country, plus the CE version has zero useful range.
Hence why I opted for the Mini 2 it made perfect sense, prices have vastly reduced now and the 4k video and better video bit rate, wind resistance and range will all be a huge plus to what I currently have.
Yes good point but still wouldnât have made it. That was over a mile out still and in the flats there that wind is equally bad enough down low.
The main point was purely to focus on signal behavior between both quads not a how far can I go and will the battery hold up. Especially with the battery age and usage difference between both. Thanks đ
I have both the mini 2 and mini 3 and the mini 3 goes much further. And that is with the RC controller
Happy for you!
