I saw one today. Has to be a '48 sedan hardtop Super 8 with ALL the bells and whistles - driver's side spotlight, fog lights, what looked to be read side mounted reflector or actual lights on the rear panels, white wall tires, moon hubs, chrome everything. It was a rolling work of art. I can't even imagine what that world looked like where all the cars were behemoths that really didn't last all that long for all the work that had to have gone into producing them -- when America was its own producer of the raw materials, steel mills, rubber factories, textile mills, chrome operations -- and if one hit 100,000 miles, it was pretty much spent as I recall. What a wonderful sight to behold on this dank, rainy day where I reside.
The Buick Super Eight is a stunning car that owns the road, even today. Thank you for making this video. I actually came to this video because I just watched ABBA sing "Knowing Me, Knowing You" and Bjorn Ulvaeus is wearing a jacket that says Buick Eight on the back of it. If I remember correctly, Ulvaeus means "of the wolf", The Buick Super Eight is also of the wolf!!
Beautiful car!; Great to see it in action and running; The seats in those cars were like a sofa you would find in your living room; not the blocks of foam rubber of today.
I love Buicks and playing LA. Noire I unlocked the Buick Super, and I jumped with joy knowing I could play the game and drive some of my favorite cars of all time
***** I live in OZ and our Prime Minister from "49 to "65 at one stage used a Four door one of these as his official Government car. these old Buicks had some real style.
Great video work and song. My dad had a 1950 Buick Super for 9 years back in the 50's when I was a child. In 1959 the dynaflow went bad and he bought a new Studebaker Lark. Smaller cars were in our future back then !
GREAT CAR! Looks very original - which is how I like to see them. Last of the pre-war designed Buicks - built like a tank. Buicks of the 40's are great cars.
The last paint job it got is really a pretty black but it has just the slightest hint of red in the black paint that it is almost the darkest maroon I have ever seen it is a very dark oxblood more than anything else I can think of. One of the best tinted black colors I have ever seen. Nice car. I have done this old, old trick a couple of times. A gun metal grey is another really good candidate to tint. That started in the late 40s when people were beginning to get some pretty good painting equipment inexpensively as far as quality goes.
Hermoso, color, estado, y mecànica felicitaciones al propietario. Tiene usted un trozo de historia. Conocì uno igual, incluso mismo color, en 1952. Yo tenìa siete años.Lo mas lindo que he visto, Take good care of this baby ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
Manual transmissions are my preference in older cars. Natural sound is best, especially when showing a vintage automobile. Straight eights don't sound like V-eights. I love the nostalgia of cars from 1932 to 1972.
To Frank Eggers. Oh, I don't know. You did still get to hear the TONE of this smooth running engine! And I did like the music itself! Plus, it would sound as if you hearing it, as you listen to the radio when you're cruising along!
Great car. I have a 58 Century Riviera 4 door which needs to get restored.... so you don't need the key to turn the ignition on ? How does that work ? In the vid, you press the accelerator to the floor to start it (that's how it is on the 58 too) but you insert the key into the switch only after it starts... how is that ? Don't you need the key to turn the ignition switch from off to on ??
'48 Buick would not be a V8. Buick's first V8 debuted for the 1953 model year. However, neither was this car ever powered by a flathead engine. David Buick's claim to fame in the automotive world was the OHV engine from its inception in 1903.... www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/a7931/buicks-111-birthday/
I saw a abandoned 1942 Buick Super Eight with a Manual transmission inside a farm barn here in Philippines. No rust, last registered is year 2006. I wonder if I will buy it. The owner will sell it 25,000 Pesos (500USD) to me. All is complete except the interior seats and panels :(
agree! I can't understand why Caddy and Olds had the far superior Hydramatic and Buick was stuck with what they used to nickname the "Dyna-slush" transmission.
And don't forget, the ORIGINAL 1st generation Powerglide was simply a light-duty Dynaflow copy. From '50 through '52 it didn't shift. Some people called it "Slip-n-Slide Powerglide"! LoL!!
does anyone know what year Buick discontinued the 3-on-the-column manual transmission? we had '51, '53 and '55 Buicks and I always hated the Dynaflow automatic.
I loved the Dynaflow. So smooth, no annoying down shifts. Dynaflow was made by Buick only not for other cars. If you take note, Buick had many things that no other G M cars have.
@@Wallace823 ...Dynaflow was a revolutionary moment in automotive history...within a decade everyone had a torque converter transmission...including heavy equipment companies like Caterpillar with their Powershift...torque converter science was established and progressed because of Dynaflow...

Cadillac & Oldsmobile each had their own, individually developed motor. . I The 49 Olds DID NOT have a Cadillac V8 in it. I don't know where that misconception came from, but I have known for as long as I've been a gearhead that Cadillac and Olds DID NOT share a motor. The Cad was a 190HP 354CID VS 135HP 303CID for the Olds, but the Olds motor was the heavier of the two by 20lbs.
'48 Caddy, 346 Flathead, 150hp '49 Caddy 331 OHV, 160hp. Don't think they saw 190hp until '52 with the 1st use of the 4bbl carburetor. Olds was 304CID & 135hp but later went up to 160 with the 4bbl.
Lovely car. My tongue is hanging out in envy. Unfortunately this video is spoiled by the harsh rock 'n roll music. Something smoother and more in period would have been better.
Weren’t the straight eight engines of these Buicks grossly underpowered. If I remember correctly, they had an output of only about ninety horsepower. No wonder they had no pickup to speak of.

Pensé que era un Buick súper de 1942
My folks would have been delighted to get a car like that as a wedding gift back in 1948. Looks like a prize.
Aerodynamically perfect!

What a car :) My dad had a 47 Buick when I was a kid, inline 8, music to the ears :D
48 Buick and Ray Charles! Now all we need is a country road and a mild sunny day!
Took my breath away!
Beautiful car!; Great to see it in action and running; The seats in those cars were like a sofa you would find in your living room; not the blocks of foam rubber of today.
Very NICE. I remember curb feelers. What a car
They’re called ankle slappers 😉😁

Have to agree would like to hear the sound of the car being driven even though the music is cool.
Fantastic car one of my favorites, I've had several Buicks in my car collection.
R.I.P, Ray Charles! You are missed!
Totally fantastic, great make, great model, great restoration! I'll take it.
Stunning car, and to think that some mush head might get their hands on something like this and turn it into a Ratrod makes you want to throw up'

I'd seriously kill and maim to own this beauty !!! Agreed about the music !
Cannot believe the need for music in car videos!
It don't even fit the time the car was made.
Roooh ; l etat de cette Buick : superbe .
La musique va vraiment bien avec la video (surtout lors du ride) .

sure with there wasn't that music to drown out the natural music of that straight 8.
this engine doesn't make a sound ;) it's a flying carpet !
btw the car has been sold a year ago

Chanaka : i don't know, i'll ask the owner... it's not MY car but a friend's one.
I'm guessing the original flathead 8 was swapped out for an early 50's OHV 8, Buick all the way
There has never been a V8 in these, it's a Buick...

just like the buick tank
Start out in low gear for faster acceleration
I have a 48 and if it's not sold in a few weeks it's going to be a street rod. I really don't want to do that. But...
Why was there a car on this music video?
It starts without the key in the ignition?
Yes. You have 3 positions on the ignition switch. Off, run and lock.
great car, stick shift! most buicks seemed to be dynaflow, or as we kids called it, dynaflush......

We called it slipaflow.
Slipamatic.

Ray Charles
I do wish you had not covered the distinctive sounds of this car with anachronistic music.
Bachfeuer You must not be American.
He thinks Ray Charles from the early 1950's in anachronistic with the late 1940's. Off by only 5 years.

Why do people ruin car videos with loud, shit music! Mustn’t be car people.
It's a shame those engines suck. There are way smaller 4 cylinders that put out more HP and torque than these straight 8s.
There was nothing wrong with these engines. Buick built millions of them.
There's no problem with the Buick engines. They used many of them in sawmills and highway buses. They were favored for their torque. .
