I'm seeing lots of people saying they're now switching to this note app from others, especially Obsidian. Capacities is like a cross between Notion and note apps like Logseq, Obsidian and Reflect. A little similar to Anytype which I reviewed a few weeks ago. In this video, I talk about what you can do with Capacities and why many people are choosing to switch to it.

For many of us, we prefer our notes -- our "second brain" -- to be fully owned and managed by ourselves, rather than by a corporate entity. This removes the risk of our data being subject to the whims of the market and developers in terms of access, features, and cost. This is probably a good alternative for the average person, but I can't see most true users of Obsidian actually wanting to switch.

Does Obsidian used to be free and open-source?
I can't find anything about this anywhere, but i'm pretty sure that the first time i've accessed Obsidian's site it was presented as an open-source software which had its back-end part mainly made by an asian guy while the front was made by an asian girl.
That would make it a trustable place to put your personal things, but why do you think so about a proprietary software like it is right now?

Learning how to set up Obsidian is such a drag. Every day something new brakes and it takes hours of troubleshooting to rebuild the code anew because some update messed up the plugins again. I spent 95% of my time in Obsidian setting it up, rather than actually using it. I think the main objective of note taking apps must be to take notes and not internet connection. Obsidian and logseq is an epitome of such tools because their priority is the complete ownership of data and the ability to use the tool without the internet connection be it woods or airplane which is more private and secure. Anytype too again focuses on "offline first" and then backup the notes to the node(cloud) when there's internet connection. These tools really prioritise note taking and not the need for internet connection just to take a simple note.

As many other commenters have already pointed out
There's no way Obsidian people like me would leave Obsidian to this Capacities app
Obsidian have many advantages and features out of all the other note taking apps key important one is the private data ownership of data with key features from many popular note taking apps RoamResearch (Second brain of linking notes) to Notions integrated features of All in one note taking that's the reason why Obsidian started to begin with
Capacities entire design language from the start is made for the Apple people aka people who have preference of aesthetical simplicity which is seen on several of your video chapters (Graph view, Page Layout, Gallery and Table views etc) over functional complexity and these are entirely two different approach and target for app user customers not even the same
Even the paid model is a exact copy of Apple centric app AI Assistant and AI chat which can be used freely if you know how to sort out the hugging face extension in Obsidian
Video title is very click baity with no reason to even exist cuz the target user of Obsidian and this app Capacities are very different even if they look similar in a glance
If vid was titled new simplified obsidian or obsidian alternative both neutral titles would be much better than this type of click baits also shows need further research or writing change from the creator

    obsidians absolute MASSIVE ADVANTAGE is
+ It stores its information on your device and not in some sort of internet cloud thingy.
+ It has as much storage as your Device is. if your PC has 1 terabyte storage, your obsidian has 1 Terabyte storage.
+ It doesn't require the internet to get access to your files. its fully Offline app. all you need is Charge your PC.
+ It is a FREE APP. No monthly subscriptions etc.

The Ai Assistant can be replicated by the “smart connections” plugin which creates a vector space search embedding using OpenAI. You use your own API key and you know exactly what privacy terms apply. They don’t train on your data and you can exclude individual files from training. Much more private

@@pyr3x_ yes. However, openAI gives you $20 of free credit when you create a new account. That free credit is on your account for 2 or 3 months before it expires (regardless of if you use it or not). I pay on average $2 per month to use this using GPT3.5, but you are in total control of how much you use this or not.
I use it because it provides me with instant info retrieval as a student. It is a lifesaver since Obsidian's default search is really poor in comparison.
I have no doubt that there will be a locally powered llama equivalent sometime soon for more powerful computers, but for now this solution is worth ~$2 a month to me. And if it ever isnt, I can simply stop using it and it will not bill me

And page formats for. various objects. I think the only limitation is the integration with an email client. which admittedly is extremely cool. Has anyone had a similar thought or potentially even attempted to recreate this system yet?

Obsidian is as simple as you make it, it has excellent functionality without any plugins but that huge community is there to help you customize your use if you want/need it. I haven't really heard of this app before this video, so I haven't really seen people leaving Obsidian for it as you claim. If anything, the lack of onboarding in Obsidian is its weak-point, which they are working on, but would mean that people just simply don't make the effort to learn it, so if you said "users that never wanted to learn Obsidian are trying this instead", I might believe you.

@@MODEST500surprise, I've met a lot more people who have no idea of markdown and no free time to learn it because they have other stuff to do. So if you have to use markdown it's a definite dealbreaker.
Personally, I am quite tech-savvy, I can write a vba macro or build a computer or install an os or set up basic proxxmox and a few vms or build a basic home network with a few APs, poe, and stuff, including planning, procurement, and installation.
But I don't have time or desire to learn markup because in this day and age you can find solutions that offer normal formatting/tagging options.
So they perhaps should consider implementing those as an option, it's not rocket science
