    Anytype is like a baby between Notion and Apple Notes with a hint of Obsidian. Unsurprisingly, it's one of the most exciting apps released recently. It's a note-taking/knowledge management app that you can use for managing tasks, projects, notes, contacts, recipes, books and pretty much anything you want to keep track of. That's why they call themselves "the everything app". It's like Tana in a way that you can customise a lot and build cool stuff. But it's probably not for me or anyone who can't be bothered to spend hours organising things.

      Just throwing this out there as a random content idea: Been keeping an eye on both Anytype and Capacities for a while now, two really interesting (and somewhat similar) new options for when I eventually leave Notion behind. Would love to see a comparison between the two!

    I don't mind that there is too much going on as it seems like it's only there if you need it, but not in the way if you don't. As for me, I've been slowly trying to wean myself off Apple Notes to develop a more advanced PKM system, and I've tried Notion, Obsidian, LogSeq, Craft, and perhaps a few more. I wanted to like Notion but I found the UX a bit clunky and distracting, spending too much time trying to make it look good. Obsidian is a cool idea but my mind doesn't work that way, and I found dealing with markdown to create too much friction for me. I'm more of a creative type so Craft was my favorite out of the box, it's definitely close to Apple Notes in ease of use and making really nice looking notes, plus backlinks etc., however I get kind of frustrated with the limitations (no real database feature). Plus Apple Notes is going to add a backlinks feature in the next MacOS update. That said I keep thinking I wish Craft, Notion, and Apple Notes had a baby haha - and it seems like Anytype might be the answer to that, with a bit of Obsidian thrown in (not mad at the idea of local storage!). Definitely going to give this a try, thanks for the review.

    Great vid Shu.
    I use Notion a lot, especially at work. It's been invaluable. Practical, but bulky. Now I see there are competitors so I headed down the rabbit hole.
    I love the simplicity and speed of Bear but it leaves me wanting for just a few more features.
    I struggled to learn AnyType for a while, and gave up. I need to get on with work.
    Obsidian is just way too over the top for my liking.
    Capacities was looking like a clear winner until I realised - no mobile app?!!
    Craft is looking like the winner. So far.

      You just need to use the recovery phase that can be found in the settings and put them on your other devices. It should be synced after you do that process.

  • @dagwould
    @dagwould Před 21 dnem

    The killer for me is that Anytype (along with Joplin and others) wants to take over my system structure. I store all data on my 'data' volume, while the software stays in the software volume. That's how I manage backups of the system and software drive images (if I was really pedantic I'd have system and software on different drives, for the same reason). But I can't see how Anytype will allow me to nominate the data location. If software won't let me do this, I don't use it.

  • @DonClark
    @DonClark Před 6 měsíci

    In a 'smart app' like this, I expect the interface to prompt me with the top 3 options rather than the user having to click the interface and then select. I expect it to be smarter and less tedious.

  • @ObsidianDetailing
    @ObsidianDetailing Před 10 měsíci +6

    I am trying Anytype quite extensively, my only complaint is that is NOT peer to peer or local first. You can not control where your data is held yet, and it all filters through Anytype to sync. I had to contact them directly to find this out as I was struggling to understand the peer to peer aspect (which is why I started testing initially). They do say that the goal is to be local and peer to peer as soon as they can be though. Other than that, its a really really nice, polished app, and the phone app is way better than obsidians

    • @mcrakhman
      @mcrakhman Před 2 měsíci

      Hi! Anytype is local first because you can do everything in the app in offline mode, except sharing your spaces to others. Also your data is synced peer to peer in local network (but p2p now works only in LAN). Otherwise Anytype uses the same sync protocol with nodes.

    • @mcrakhman
      @mcrakhman Před 2 měsíci

      For example you can even fully restore your account from your other local device without connecting to nodes.

    • @ArcRain
      @ArcRain Před 6 měsíci +2

      It is worth mentioning that anytype has done the best job of synchronization among all local-first note-taking apps. The data can be synchronized not only through the official online nodes or self-host nodes, but also through automatic synchronization over a LAN, and all of this does not require additional configuration.

    I belive you got a mistaken in understanding about what 𝒓𝒆𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 are.
    Semantics work by an easy structure: Concept A + Linking verb/preposition + Concept B … or Subject + Verb/preposition + Predicate(Object).
    The relation "is not like" an property of something. Relation is what the name says: a relation between two concepts or, if you wanna, a relation between Concept A with Concept B or between Subject and Predicate (Objects of Grammatics). In logic sense the relations predicated the objects but relations do it in the sense of changing. This is the diference between a predication done by an adjective, for example. An adjective declares an static characteristic of something.
    "John"+ "drive" + "an yellow car" : Subject (Concept A)= "John"; linking/relation/verb = "drive"; Direct Object/ConceptB/Predicate = "an yellow car" ("yellow car" = "The car is yellow"; the "to be(is)" verb is not really a verb but a pure copola; so "yellow"(adjective) declares something present in that specific "car", yellow predicates the car in relation to its color.
    The semantical construction can only be valid by the declaration of the kind of relation between Concept A and Concept B. Linking A and B do not means much without this linking power of the relation.
    Knowing the sense of this feature you will construct another understanding of the logic behind the development of such tool in such a way.
    So Tags and Relations have complet distinct applications. Tags are more suitable for predicating static categories of one concept, what, in an ontology structure/map, is an upward relation described by "is a" relation, example: "a cow is a bovine"; "a bovine is a mamal"; "a mamal is an animal". The concepts are upward related from the most specific to the most generic. Tags are suitable to declare this kind of relation.
    Objects and tags are "about the same" thing with the diference that an object is set apart from the universe of tags and gains an special convenience and status easying the filtering.
    The correct use, though, would be setting objects just to fisical categories and tags to logical categories (classifications). Example: Book is a physical category; History is a logic category; So for straight use book can be an object and hIstory only can be a tag. This rule is not mandatory but it would be an good measure to take full advantage of future AI implementation on this software.
    So, it is not a question of taste, there are strong reasons to justify the choices of the developers and this kind of nomenclatures.
    The Cathegories of Aristoteles, Trivium, and ontology structure can be a good begining to fully understand and reveals the full potential of this software structure and the logic behind developers choices.
