  • In this music video Anoushka Shankar performs "Lasya" from her album Reflections. The name Lasya refers to the Hindu goddess Parvati’s Cosmic Dance, a feminine and graceful “yin” response to her consort Shiva’s powerful and masculine Tandava. The complete album is a personal retrospective including Anoushka's favourite tracks with hits from former success albums like Land of Gold, Traces of You, Rise,
among others, and presenting them in a
    new tailor-made selection curated by
    Anoushka Shankar herself.

    Sitar - Anoushka Shankar
    Hang - Manu Delago
    Udu - Bernhard Schimpelsberger
Mridangam, Moorsing and Vocals - Pirashanna Thevarajah

The term Lasya, in the context of Hindu mythology, describes the dance performed by Goddess Parvati as it expresses happiness and is filled with grace and beauty. She is believed to have danced the Lasya in response to the male energy of the cosmic dance of Tandava performed by Lord Shiva. In a literal sense, Lasya means beauty, happiness and grace. This is an ethereal composition ! The perfect blend of instruments. While Anoushka Shankar is absolutely enthralling, I cannot appreciate Manu Delago’s expertise on the hang drums enough. So also for Pirasahnna Thevaraja on percussion and vocals. I have always found this track evocative and deeply moving, something that compels me to look inwards. Music is probably the most healing of all art forms.

I had heard this masterpiece when I was in my 9th standard on tv (VH1). I remember having downloaded all the songs of ANOUSHKA Ji's album "Traces of you" and the few songs with Karsh Kale. I was mesmerised. I still am - 6 years later. This music made me fall in love with instrumentals - specifically Indian Classical Music and over the years has become my way to connect with the Lord.
    MUSIC IS UNIVERSAL. BOUNDLESS. DIVINE.

Lasya - The calm dance symbolizing feminine energy. It is performed by both Parvati Mata and Shiv Ji (to calm the destructive Tandav dance of Kali Mata). Shows that there's both masculine and feminine energies is us all; there's balance in us all.
I learned about both these dances recently and immediately came back to this masterpiece because I remembered 'Lasya' being the name of Anoushka's lovely instrumental piece. Thank you so much 💚
