Free after 8 years in an Israeli prison

  • Seven weeks into the new war between Israel and the militant group Hamas, a four-day ceasefire was called and an exchange began of Israeli hostages and imprisoned Palestinians.
On 24 November, the Guardian's Jerusalem correspondent, Bethan McKernan, witnessed celebrations at the Betunia checkpoint in Ramallah, and was allowed access to a family awaiting the release of their daughter, Noorhan. That night, 39 Palestinian women and children were freed from an Israeli jail. Most of the prisoners were held for minor offences, but some were more serious; though none who had murdered Israelis were released.

I can't believe that she went to prison for 8 years without actually hurting anyone. It's very shocking for a country that's supposed to be a "democracy". Israel should be ashamed.

Israel is not a democracy. It’s an apartheid state. None of these people you see in this report have a vote - yet every single aspect of their life is controlled by the Israeli military and they had no vote or protection against this occupation.

I can’t get over how amazing these communities are. Whether it is a funeral or celebration you are always surrounded by crowds of people supporting you. Who would greet a prisoner released in western society? Would there be a crowd of extended family friends neighbours be waiting? Will your community turn out and dance and celebrate? Would people even have noticed you were gone?

They all suffer under occupation, it makes sense they are so united. Also the culture probably and large families. She didn't do anything wrong, not something to warrant a 16 yo for 10 years in prison that's for sure so it's only natural they greet her, she's just another victim of Israel's occupation

Palestinian hostage or captives is more accurate description than prisoners . The word prisoners assumes due process, like access to lawyers, being charged and going to trial when most are just kidnaped by Isreali army and police indefinitely. Most of the 150 released were held as teen and children and are not even charges let allow went to trial .
