    Forget the inept commentator ! (the manufactures never discussed openly the 'real power' till the end of 1986 after the restrictions were placed on boost pressure)
    These 1985 BMW Braham's had well over 1400+bhp, amazing footage of RAW POWER!
    Maybe not the fastest in lap times...... but, amazing straight line speed! and very similar to the 1986 video I posted on the BMW powered Benetton.
    This video is in particular is good cause you can see the immense stress the turbo is under as at the end of the session it has almost cried enough with a fair bit of blue smoke bellowing from the back of Piquets car............ then again 5.4+bar of absolute 'qualifying' boost pressure on a 'truck turbo' from the 1980's will have that effect.
    Enjoy this amazing video. Turn up the sound and relive the memories, of the never to be repeated excess, the unrivaled show!, that was Turbo F1 1980's style!!!!
    Get On It! :-Oc==3

      deadseriousforsure Nah. The target was 1500 hp for the BMW M12 engine (1000 hp per liter), but they could only meassure up to 1000 hp on the dynos. They calculated the power to 1350 hp which was just an estimate. Years later they put one on a dyno that could meassure it and the result was 1208 hp. And mind you, it was only in quali trim for 3 or 4 laps and the engine/turbos was burnt out, in race trim they used a different engine and smaller turbos which only had up to between 800-900 hp and rarely ran them at full boost because of fuel saving and reliability.

Fuck, they still shift gears, unlike F1 with semi- auto boxes and their traction control and stability control, launch control, abs and I could go on and on and on. Where's the skill gone that these guys USED to have. This truly was a golden era in F1. All these names of greats that I grew up with, truly a special time

    The funny/ironic thing to me is the HUGE black plumes of exhaust - you can tell each time he changes gear because the smoke stops.
    Just shows early turbo technology - add boost and over-fuel for "safety"... That black smoke is caused by unburnt fuel - and having unburnt fuel on a turbo engine means you are absolutely DUMPING fuel into the engine.
    Still an amazing feat of engineering though - supposedly this BMW ran about 7BAR of boost - or roughly 100psi for us Americans.
    That is an INSANE amount of boost - we only see that high of boost levels from compound - turbocharged diesel engines. These guys managed 1400hp with a 1.5 liter engine - that's UNDER 100 cubic inches for us Americans...
    So to all the LS MOWDURS R DA BEST EVUR" people... Think about the fact that your engine was designed in the 50's...and if your fancy Corvette motor produced as much power per cubic inch, you'd have roughly 5000hp.
    That's not a circuit racing engine - that's a drag racing engine.
    Try building any small block V8 to produce 3000hp and last for 200 miles.
    Ain't gonna happen.
    F1 is, and always has been - the pinnacle of automotive engineering.
    These engines are absolutely amazing to anyone who is an engine nerd.
    10,000+rpm, 1,000+hp and still drive able enough to win a race on a circuit, not just a 5 second blast in a straight line.

James hunt was (he is sadly dead) arrogant and very outspoken (with good qualifications for both) often telling us just what he thought of inept drivers. I think James shagged more women than he ever won races, but then that´s what we expected of our F1 heroes back then,
      Murray Walker is a living legend in motor racing. His father raced motorcycles and Murray started off as a keen amateur race commentator. He always did and still does commentate with the enthusiasm of a school boy watching his first race yet with the know-how of a true race car geek. Those BMWs might have put out 1400bhp with the turbo wound right up but at that boost they quickly became grenades, blowing parts all over the track. During the race, turned down in order to last, they put out less than 900bhp. Listen to Senna blipping the throttle though the corners, one of the only drivers who did that. Even then he was obviously the quickest of them all.

    • @gripp9k
      @gripp9k Před 8 lety +8

      This was back in the days where you could use an engine for qualifying and another for each race, so it didn't matter. The big problem with the BMW engine was turbo lag; it was horrid and very difficult to drive. But on a straight there was nothing that could touch it; I can't imagine how fast a 1200lbs car would be with 1400hp shoving you along. The interesting part is the engine blocks they used were 1.5L out of production cars that BMW would reclaim - but only if they had over 100,000km on them - the engineers realized that all the stress at this mileage from the manufacturing process would have been wholly worked out by this point, and could handle the power. Obviously everything else in the engine was completely custom but I still think this is hilarious to use an engine block that was designed originally for 80hp output to be making almost 1500hp a little over a decade later.

    The whole reason turbos came to f1 (in my opinion) is because of rallying! Nothing in big time motorsports had a turbo until audi built the quattro, the rest of the rallying manufacturers followed suit then all of a sudden they came about in f1. If the unconfirmed story of the lancia delta s4 keeping up with non turbo f1 cars round a full race circuit is true it would have woken the manufacturers in f1 up that turbo was the way to go

      These were before Audi. There had been Indy cars with turbos for years before F1 , and Can Am Porsche , and BMW touring car , and Renault Le Mans and rally car.

    I don't get how it's such a free for all in these pole position runs. Other cars can just be right in your way during your fast lap. Would it make too much sense just to have them queued up? Mental.

    They should've forked into another racing series with this formula. Then we would get to see which people want to see more--the one run by FIA autocrats and their precious PC sponsor dollars or the crazy boostacular where drivers fight to control wild beasts?
