- As a commemoration of The 60th. anniversary of The Queen's Coronation on Tuesday 2nd. June 1953 at Westminster Abbey I thought it appropriate to post the full version in one video of the much celebrated colour film chronicle of this most sacred & ancient event. (I'd hoped to have had this uploaded pre 2nd. June. Technical issues needed to be overcome before it could be posted. Although The Queen's Birthday Long Weekend In NSW is still a fitting day for this posting.)
Westminster Abbey, officially The Collegiate Church Of St. Peter At Westminster, has been the location for every Coronation of all Sovereigns since William The Conqueror. (WiR 1066.)
While a few English/British Monarchs were Coroneted at these locations, they all have also been Crowed at Westminster Abbey since 1066 :
St. Marys Church Kingston, (some pre 1066 English Monarchs.)
Winchester Cathedral (Henry The Young King & RiR.)
Gloucester Cathedral, (HiiiR.)
Notre-Dame Cathedral Paris, (HviR.)
Kirk Of The Holy Rude Stirling Scotland, (JviR Of Scotland JiR Of England.)
Holyrood Abbey Scotland, (CiR.)
Scone Abbey Scotland, (CiiR.)
Titled A Queen Is Crowned this video covers every aspect of The Sovereign's Coronation, so steeped in much recorded & indeed for those with a keen grasp of such things, un recorded generally known history. With faith & tradition touching on the most common man of The Realm to it's most noble this film so eloquently narrated by the then Sir Laurence Olivier, includes at the beginning a stirring & touching view of Her Majesty's domestic realms to some very wise, deep & meaningful commentary at the conclusion that in my book is just as worthy of abidance today as it was in 1953 !
No one can doubt that much has changed in this world since The Queen was Crowned, but at the same time there are many things that if one cares to look & forensically disseminate have not. One is Queen Elizabeth's Style & Titles pertaining to The Realm in which I live, along with a number of other realms that would in the the address below insert their country for Australia.
Elizabeth The Second, By The Grace Of God Of The United Kingdom, Australia & Her Other Realms & Territories Queen, Head Of The Commonwealth, Defender Of The Faith.
I for one feel honoured, proud & privileged to be living at the time of our present Monarch knowing of her unyielding devotion to her duty at every level of her office, for now more than six decades & long may she reign as an example to us all. I've only seen her as one of many faces in a crowd, but am privy to know that Our Queen is quite simply a good woman, although her titles are undoubtedly of the most impressive nature, the title of good man or good woman is life's most impressive & the most honourable any person can bestow on another in my view.

Well done to Phillip for pushing it to be televised. Such an iconic moment now and forever. It will be very cool to see Charles get crowned in 4K and how the whole event works
At the current rate of global affairs Charles is probably going to end up a wartime king like his grandfather. The world seems just as uncertain as it did in 1936 when George VI came to the throne.
I would not be surprised if the world is at war by 2025 the global stability of Elizabeth's reign is gone.
Even if it hadn't have been televised it would still have been recorded just like the coronation of George Vl was.
I agree, and His Majesty farther is not here but both his Parents like Mine are watching me and willing me to do the right thing
Thank God no one tripped.
@@seansmith445 yes. But they had to give Philip credit for something I guess. Find something to say" good boy " for . lol
Queen Elizabeth was the only leader to have been documented on practically every known media format, from silent films to digital. And to put it even further into perspective, both my maternal grandparents were just toddlers when Queen Elizabeth began her reign... Rest in Peace, Your Majesty. I may be from the states, but your timeless elegance and class should resonate everywhere on how people should act as leaders, something a lot of nations, including mine, are currently lacking. Never again will any of us see such an amazing tenure that lasted as long as it has.
I was two months and two days old when this occurred. The Brits and the Catholic Church know how to do ceremony like no one else. I will watch Charles' coronation, it should be a once in a lifetime spectacle, especially since it will occur in an age of high definition 4k video with multi channel sound. Will be breathtaking, I'm sure.
Not sure that puts anything into perspective. My sister is a grandparent and she's 43. Age means nothing because it depends on too many factors. You should compare it to something like events everyone can link to their own family history. The Queen was a teenager during WW2. Everyone has a grandparent or parent or ancestor that was alive at that time and has heard the stories. That puts things into perspective everyone can understand.
Why "majesty" upon some leader of a completely different territory
Poor Elizabeth-Barely in her twenties and then thrust into Queendom without no one to help or guide her.The King who abdicated was a very poor leader. He abdicated to chase skirts instead of being there for his country. What a shame
My maternal grandparents were 52 and 64 when Queen Elizabeth II was crowned. My mother was 31. My parents were married in 1956, and I was born in 1957, so I am looking forward to the Coronation, as there has not been one in my lifetime.
This was only 70 years ago but the UK has changed so much ( for the worse) it may as well be 700 years.
Elizabeth has paid us back handsomely for this great demonstration of love and loyalty.
I am getting old. I remember watching this, as a little boy, on television in 1953.
Anyone else seeing this just after Charles III's coronation?
Yep me!

Yup. What a joke his was. All other European Royals are keeping a low Profile and don’t present themselves as superior. Time to cut down on the almost cartoonish spectacle and join the 21st Century

It fascinates everyone across the world.
The first five minutes, with such breathtakingly wonderful English views, Shakespeare's poetic words, and Sir Laurence Olivier's perfect narration.. I was unashamedly sobbing like a baby. What a wonderful country I live in... Always my first love.

I agree 100%... Sadly we just didn't need that "overlay of hymns and music" though out the coronation. Which didn't happen !!!
It took away the Majesty of it all...I'd have liked to have heard the silences...and heard The Royal Dukes Pledges...and also...they skipped the most magical moment... when she, Elizabeth is anointed by god ( through the priests) as Queen .
The British Monarchy is the only one...anointed in this way...Which is why there is not possibility of a British King or Queen "Retiring" as in Holland or other N European states.
God appointed her... and God alone will end her reign.
@@hotoneinspai They did that because they thought the anointing ceremony to be so sacred that it could not be filmed.

The lighting and modern aspect added in hm king charles iii coronation might be the reason why it didnt feel as magical as this one
Agreed. Looked more like trying to be woke concert church service than real coronation like this one. Dissappoinmenting really.
Mine and Woody.EXE’s coronation in Wales was better because it was my 21st birthday and the hype across wales was incredible. I didn’t realise how loved we both are until the coronation day. It was just like the late Queen Elizabeth’s one
@@user-rr3yw9dn1lah, yes, using the word ‘woke’ seems to be the remedy of why things are so bad nowadays. Our country was and currently still is in a cost of living crisis and you’re blaming this all on so called ‘wokeism’. Believe me buddy, if we had a government that knew how to spend money, idiots like yourself would shut up. Blaming woke policies for a ceremony being disappointing is just stupid. Charles also wanted to modernise his reign as well, personally moaning about wokeism won’t change the fact that this world is a more accepting place and I’m afraid people like you just gotta embrace that, wether you like it or not.
@@nicolelawless9942congratulations on your coronation. Did Woody EXE also have a crown?
The queens coronation had staged seating in all of the annexes of Westminster abbey, that stretched all the way up to the rafter, so if the lighting is different it’s because the light was blocked by the huge amounts of seating. It makes it so much more cozy and solemn.
This is splendid! Thank you.

Why do I have the feeling she will still be Queen in 2053?
William & Catherine (Kate) will be King & Queen by then lol
Aaron Porter Do you think Prince Charles will be the next King, or will he give it to Prince William? since prince will seems more popular among the British people.
I am not British so I would not know.
Marlon Christie The whole point of a Monarchy is that you don't choose who is at the head.
Marlon Christie We can only hope it isnt Charles he is divorced after all....he can step aside and let Prince William take it...knowing him though he wont
+Marlon Christie The U.K. is a _constitutional_ monarchy. This means the monarchy is restricted by the terms of the constitution. In layman's language, the law dictates what the sovereign can or cannot do. And the legislative body (Parliament) passes laws.
So it is already set in law that Charles, the Prince of Wales will be the next monarch after HM The Queen..It is already set in law that if Charles were to die before Elizabeth II, the next person in line of succession, Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, will be the next monarch.
It is unlikely that Charles will abdicate in favor of his son, William, because doing so will cause a constitutional crisis much like what his great uncle Edward VIII did in 1936.
I too am not British, but I do know.
And has she reigned long and May she reign more! This is spectacular no Hollywood can create such thing. So spectacular I’m afraid we’ll never see it again like this!
From being just a young girl at 27 to suddenly becoming a queen bearing the country's responsibility overnight would scare the living daylights out of anyone today.
But at the time Princess Elizabeth didn't have a choice in that matter. She just simply had to get on with it. Still, I think what helped her greatly was the constant support of her caring and loving husband, Prince Philip.
Plus, being a mum that she already was at the time may have helped her to some degree in being mature and having a sense of responsibility which she'd needed for such an important role in history for many years to come.

It will always exist as long as young children learn that some people - kings and queens - are innately better than others.

Such a National Treasure. Such elegance and majesty!!! Never again will this pomp and display attended by 3 million in the crowds, be seen again. I hope one day the Technicolor strips will be realigned and restored so it will be crisp and clear.

Queen Elizabeth II was a world wide treasure!❤❤❤
She looked so young and vulnerable throughout the ceremony. She's made an exceptional queen, though
Young, poised & exceptional would be my description, based on your thoughts.
She was only 24 at the time, right?
27, sorry.
She was never suppose to be Queen. She was never even supposed to be "The Princess". Her uncle was supposed to be king. Her father was thrust into it, having had no sons, when his older brother abdicated. She was grieving the loss of her father while taking the role that she hadnt been born to do. Of course, she looks sad, frightened and uncomfortable. She took it with grace, though and became a firm, fair and excellent leader.
@@krystaldispatchbetttymcgin7702 Yes only 25 when she acceded to the throne (Feb6th 1952) and just 27 when crowned in June 1953. So very young for such a role but H.M. has been a wonderful monarch
Well... never again will there be another like her... True grace and elegance. a life a duty.
For all the pageantry, the ceremony remains a deeply spiritual event. The Queen has reflected that it was like a "taking on"...the beginning of her reign was a seamless transition from that of her father and the Coronation very much reflects this continuity

It was during a school holiday and I had taken a holiday job at the zoo the glorious sunny summer's day HM visited Dudley so I missed seeing the Queen greeted at the Council House steps by our civic dignitaries but I can well remember the cheers of the townsfolk rolling up Castle Hill into the market place and on up the hillside to my perch just outside the triple gate of the castle ruins. Some things stay for ever.
gordywestmids Yepp.... it was a real sunny day (my dad was a green grocer out selling lollypops in the crowd). It was a hot one too !
Both my parents were born before World War 2, and therefore old enough to remember the Coronation. My father was out in Hong Kong clad in khaki and finishing National Service. My mother was a grammar school sixth former, a month shy of seventeen who saw the event on her Aunt Bertha's TV. They had their lives before them as the Coronation took place!
My mum was a young schoolgirl in Hong Kong at the time of the Queen's coronation. She says all the children in HK were given a gift - a flag and lollies - to mark the coronation.

Exactly how my primary celebrated the late Queen’s Diamond jubilee in 2012, I was a month shy of my 10th birthday back then not knowing I’d become Queen 10 years later just 3 months after I turned 20. I’m 21 now and I’ve been Queen for a year and one month now
These mature/older people in this video may have seen King Edward coronation in 1901-1902 when they were younger and seen more coronations of Kings up to this one.
I was born 20 years too late to see this, however am looking forward to seeing Charles III when it takes place. As an American, I admire the British and the way they keep to the ancient traditions so faithfully, and also still using the actual priceless relics that have withstood the test of time and were held and worn by many monarchs dating back a millenia.
I missed this coronation by 20 years too, hopefully I will see Charles III crowned.
I'm from the states and I find this absolutely amazing. I had the privilege to visit London almost 10 years ago when I was a mere 12 years old. I have to say, it will not be the last. I miss it to be quite honest. I'm sure I'll watch the next coronation when that day finally comes. It really is fascinating.
it's coming soon! you should come back to London man!
Hi
You’ll be witnessing Charles’ coronation in May, then mine and Woody.EXE’s coronation is literally 2 months later; Woody.EXE was aiming for June 2nd but he decided to have it on July 20th instead because I’d be celebrating my 21st birthday as his Queen. I can’t wait for me, my 2009 Woody, my sister, Mummy and Woody.EXE to be back together for our coronation.
Edit: 5 months later and our coronation had finally happened. I’ve never experienced anything like it and everyone was glad I was alive to see this day and I felt the same relief during Charles coronation just 2 months before ours. 2023 has turned out to be a good year after everything that’s happened in February with my illness and everything. I never felt proud walking down the long way in Wales’s Abbey before
And so the day had come.
Long live the King!
God save our most gracious and holy Queen. The absolute pinnacle in rightousness and majesty. I am truly blessed to be under her glorious wing. God Save the Queen.
God save the Queen of Canada!
Prince Harry will be King of Canada mark my words.
@@matthewplant2603 How do you know shut up. Yes he will.

8 September 2022. R.I.P.
“God Save Queen Elizabeth, may the Queen live forever.”
Don’t worry, she will. ✨🌟👑
Wonderful - I am sure tomorrow's coronation will not be as grand as Her Majesty's
All the scaffolding in her coronation and those of her predecessors would be completely unsafe by today's standards.
This would obviously have been a time before the concept of Health and Safety.
Nearly 70 Years The Queens Platinum Jubilee in 2022. Incredible!
I was 6 months old when this happened, but every day I take a breath it makes me proud to be English and our QUEEN 👸💖 this is why every true English Man Woman Child should see this and the commonwealth country's just to see how much One woman gave her life to her country and people ❤ and the world 🌎 even when people are wrong in trying to destroy our country , YOU REALLY NEED TO LISTEN AND LEARN WHAT ENGLAND IS ABOUT WE ARE A VERY PROUD PEOPLE AND WE WILL DEFEND THE LAND TO THE DEATH, GOD SAVE OUR QUEEN AND THE ROYAL FAMILY 👪💙
I have the feeling she will live to be 120 years old and still be Queen.
Yup let's hope so indeed.
She was laid to rest today. 😪
Pity she didn't go for another 5 years to live as long as her Queen Mum. 😞
Update: she came close to being 100 years old. Now 70 years later her son King Charles III will be doing this.
@@TheUnderCoverMother2020 Sadly so, 😞
Long live Queen Elizabeth. GOD Save Queen Elizabeth. May the Queen Live forever.
She was just laid to rest today. RIP Queen Elizabeth II
@@TheUnderCoverMother2020 I cried a few times. God Save the King.
God Bless the Queen, may she continue to guide us eternally. Rest in peace your majesty. Long Live the King
1953 - 2022. The reign of the Queen is now over. 😢
She has accomplished her mission and has fulfilled her duty. My respect to her.
God Bless Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, on this day of her passing. Her amazing dedication to her people, all over God's Earth, is truly appreciated. Thank you, Your Majesty and may you rest in eternal peace. God Save the King.
Wow. Just wow. Elizabeth II really was an inspirational woman. But a last, her passing has brought her glorious 70 year reign to an end and her long journey for royalty is over. May she be blessed by the lord God in the heavens above us.
2 months and we get to see this again
They scheduled it already? It was nearly a year and a half after Elizabeth acceded before she was coronated.
@@MarkVA71 they been planning this for 30 years at least...they're more than ready
Pretty sure the next coronation would be next year. The nation gets to mourn the queen first before celebrating a new monarch.
She was so young and beautiful, it makes you want to cry a little bit!
Hard to think I’ll become Woody.EXE’s Queen at 21, then my sister becomes the Princess of Wales at 21. We’ll have he’ll of a birthday
British must be proud of their tradition b/c they are the only nation that still has a coronation in modern world. So great!
So does Thialand and Japan.
Just watching this splendid coronation makes me realize how different the times we live in are from 1953....the Coronation of her Late Majesty and that of King Charles III, though similar, also show some glaring descripancies....Her Late Majesty's coronation was so much more awesome, I guess because the times then were so much simpler and the monarchy held alot more weight in terms of popularity and significance...The other countries that make up Great Britain and the UK such as Northern Ireland and Whales and also the Common wealth seemed more accepting of the English monarch as their Head of State as opposed to now when they are all trying to jump ship...watching King Charles coronation just feels a tad bit "bitter sweet" when contrasted with the Late Queen's coronation....times really have changed.
Elizabeth was magic. She was so regal and it helps she got crowned much much younger than Charles. I think Charles' coronation was great since it was made for modern audience so his coronation makes sense..But no one can deny the Queen did it all much better confirming once again there will never be another Queen Elizabeth II. And there will never be another Prince Philip.
This was all thanks to Prince Philip for getting the Coronation on TV. I wasn't born in this time period but I am fascinated by the Royal Family and have multiple documentaries about them and books about them.
I am an American (US) and was only three when Princess Elizabeth was crowned queen but I remember in later years hearing my parents talk about how wonderful it had been to listen to the coronation on the radio. What a terrific thing to be able to see this as it happened. Terrific video presentation.
So glad you enjoyed it. I've viewed this many times & each time I do my heart swells with unbridled pride & wonderment. My skin remains covered in goose bumps during it's duration.
And 8yrs on,it's still enjoyable.
I can simply say,I LOVE AND ADORE QUEEN ELIZABETH THE SECOND.I just bought the dvd too. Beautiful video.Thank you sharing this on youtube.Greetings from Australia.
I feel like we got gyped out of a proper coronation with her son charles wanting to do a less formal coronation as this one.
Too many brits complaining about wasting the tax payers money which is why they went cheaper
It was said that out of all the coronations in the 20th century (1902, 1911, 1937, 1953) this was the grandest of them all.
I'm a princess myself, and yes, it's true
Best value for money, since her reign lasted longer than all the others
Prince Phillip so sweet! So cute! 🥺😍✨
The intro was incredibly ahed of time! A true masterwork of technology!
I have never seen color film of this before! So glad this has been preserved!
To think this was so long ago almost no one inside Westminster for this is still alive.
