I finally bought this exact model after months of debating if it was worth the price or now. I found it on sale at Best Buy so I bought it and absolutely love it. We always have a drink poured with ice now. Definitely worth the money. I did have to clean it once, it was making odd noises and cleaning it seemed to fix that. We started buying spring water to use in it hoping that it stays cleaner than using our well water.

I tend to just use a cheap pitcher with a filter to it, so I can filter the water first to keep it from building up lime (I'm on a well, so I get some pretty bad hard water deposits).
Filters are way cheaper, and they do just as well as bottled water.

If you are going to get this machine, GET THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. I've gone through 3 of these in the last few years. There are all kinds of problems they have - luckily many have made videos on how to solve them (squeal, pump priming etc). We decided after the last one broke (again - this time, it shoots out grey plastic chunks in the ice, which for some reason they won't cover under the warranty), to try a different (cheaper) brand that we eventually can hook to a waterline. Its a crownful, and the ice is identical to this.

My Brand new Opal 2.0 in the first batch had metal shavings in it, had one in my mouth with the first mouthful of ice. So far after about 6 batches of ice, I let it all melt into a large white bowl and i find metal flakes in the bottom. I also found larger metal fragments in the bottom of the water reservoir. What makes me angrier is I have posted a very objectionable review with no biasing or drama on GE's website and they take it down every time citing it does not meet their guidelines which are, 1. Keep your review focused on the product. (It was all about the product). 2. Avoid writing about customer service (nothing about customer service), 3. Refrain from mentioning competitors or the specific price you paid for the product. (None of this was mentioned). 4. Do not include any personally identifiable information, such as full names. (There was none). GE is censoring me from getting this out there because they know it will cause a shit storm. Please spread the word and check your ice and the bottom of the ice maker.

Loved ours for two years. But alas, our Opal (not "Optal") eventually ran into the SAME issues I've seen reported all over. From the whing/screeching sound to reduced ice to absolutely no ice at all being made. We also experienced the make ice/go into "defrost mode" forever issue. In the last year we've had so many problems with this unit that I'm really thinking about going with a totally different brand. Two years for a $600 unit isn't the greatest value, in my opinion -- especially for an ice maker. I have no complaints about it... other than the common issues people eventually experience with it (resulting in a unit that has to be returned, fixed, or tossed -- and their warranty blows, so don't expect to have anything to go wrong within that SHORT warranty window).

The amazon one works about a year. Make sure you get a warranty for 2 or more years. You will loose $125 id you send it back, they wont be able to fix it and they keep the bad one to boot. Not sure the UV light in the cleaning cycle even works. You may be able to oil the motor and gearbox but the auger may bind up. I kept up with the cleaning. I used RO filtered water for the source.

GE Needs to make a Cafe version of the Opal 2.0 in Matte White with Copper Accents as optional (or something like their other countertop appliances). Charge ~$800 for it (since it is the Cafe version of the GE Profile), and upgrade the overall finishes and some of the cheaper feeling components on it. I would only use 5 stage reverse osmosis filtered water to fill this baby.

Overall I enjoyed the machine and I owned both the first and second version. However, after almost two years I started having issues and managed to break it by sticking a tube cleaner too far into the machine. Do yourself a favor and get a protection plan. It does not official support a water line which is a huge disadvantage. I found a much cheaper machine from NewAir that I am going to be getting next week since it was about $250 cheaper including the protection plan and it has a waterline inlet so I'm planning to get an inline filter that you only have to change once a year.

We have RO water. I don't trust smart devices. Can you disable all that nonsense on this machine? Other than that, I only get a small ssi check and I'd spend the whole thing on a durable good I could rely on like this. Last month I spent most of my check on a cotton candy machine. I could use the ice to make snow cones. My boyfriend could use it for iced tea.

Do you have to have the optional water jug on the side or can you live without it

I would probably find it rather annoying to use without it.

Do you know why I’m always messing up with the side tank? Every time I go to fill it there’s water in the base and I spill it all. And when I go to clean it thinking it’s empty I pull the hose out of the side tank and it spews water. Cannot for the life of me figure out how that side tank works.

It just connects to the main machine. I’ve never had it spill. Do you have the other tube propped up? It shouldn’t be resting on the counter or the whole machine will drain.

Don't unplug it. Just lift it off the base.

Heck no it's not worth $600, not even $300. It only makes ice and doesn't do anything else. You can buy a used fridge with a working ice maker for less.

In Ohio we call this “Swenson’s ice” after the drive up burger chain. 😁
