Engines from a Junkyard can be a risky investment! In this week's video, Tony tears down a Porsche 911 3.2L engine from a junkyard to see if it's worth rebuilding. He also shows how to identify major issues in other used engines.

Definitely the postmortem analysis during engine breakdown is quite entertaining and obviously the upcoming boosted rebuild will be as well. Loving this channel👏
You guys are doing great. Nice diversity of things happening in a specialized work shop. Keep going
You guys will have a huge channel a year from now if you keep up what you’re doing!
Keep the detail. Between the 928 body fab and this engine breakdown “I-ma-lernin-I-ma-lovin”!
I very much like the info you are giving ! I know nothing about car engines
great video, little more info is always nice. Especially for us car fanatics that know the basics.
A little suggestion, I think that most people who are in far enough into the tear down to get to the explanation of how the engine works already know how an engine works. I think the best info for your viewers are just the cool little quirks of these engines. Other that that great video!
Love it. I'm always down for more technical details! Like cam timing, etc!
Love the deep dive on this, can't wait to see more!
hey great video, as feedback on the explaining of eninge stuff (9:30): i think the basics of how an eningne works isn't that useful for this video (there are loads of other video's that also explain this), i do study automotive technology so i have a good understanding of how engines work and this might be helpful to other people. But the porsche or boxer specific things like the common problems of these engines and differences with engines of other manufacureers is really great.
Good to know! Thanks for the feedback!
would love to see a 4 part complete 911 engine build.
Great vid ! Looking forward to following this build
Love the indepth explanations, very interesting!
the more detail in a engine build makes it way cooler, learning about "wierd" engines is really cool- both the bad and the good
Things I found recently: 76 911S motor I just pulled apart. Crank had to be ground 10/10, oil cooler was rejected by an aviation company as "unfixable scrap" due to multiple core leaks.
Yo junkyard wars was legit!😂
I’m enjoying seeing the basic engine functions across a variety of engines. More please 😊💓😎🏁🎩
Would like to know more on the engine build so good knowledge is everything.
Great details keep them coming even if you know everything, everyday is a school day.
I think everyone who watches your channel knows how a crankshaft and pistons work :D I'm here for the bodywork / sheetmetal fab skills BUT i'd never seen an aircooled car engine teardown beforehand so thats super awesome. I think you can go even more in depth! Great channel, and great videos.
Definitely keen for more in-depth run downs on all your projects. I know it’s a heap more work though , so hopefully other people share the same thoughts 👍
Loved it the more in depth the better !
Finally a full Tony episode! I agree with @asahart2489 in a teardown don’t need to explain basics, rather focus on pro-tips, teardown best practices (stages, organization), what to look for, things that represent poor/high quality and factors that impact tests (all of what you did) - I like the Sherlock Holmes angle… what you saw and what it meant! Look forward to the rebuild episode!
Really here for the fabrication videos, as I have a project requiring a heck of a lot, but you guys make everything interesting and you present it very well.
I truly enjoyed this fantastic video which is also a good way to let people know about your capabilities. I wasn’t aware of your knowledge of air cooled engines and the special tool for holding the cam sprocket fastener looks well used which also indicates that this engine tear down had predecessors. As for junkyard engines, the best odds one can hope for is 50% success rate; in other words, rebuild what you have rather than buy someone else’s problem.
I've taken apart and rebuilt the 4-cylinder boxer from a 1969 Volkswagen bug . But that was back in about 1987 . So watching this is a good refresher on how boxer engines work . As long as you show what you're doing and don't just talk about it , the more information the better .
Air cooled porsche anything now is worth Gold $$$
3.2 are the SBC of Porsche…….RIP magnesium 2.7😎
One time i got a 2.5 tdi engine from a junkjard for my t4 and it was missing a oil cap and the van was without a hood, so i pointed that out when buying it. "no i just sold that hood a few days ago, should be fine" Well the engine had water in in and was a write off eventually. But he gave me the money back so it was all good in the end.
Get the engine fixed up and back in the millennium falcon asap
Are you going to wide body this 911 or turn it inti a coupe?
would be cool!
5:47… technically it’s not a boxer engine. Yes a boxer engine is a flat engine, but it also has a different firing order and timing than just a flat engine… sooo, technical Porsches are just flat and not boxers…
Hey guys, great rebuild, but please ask the cameraman to hold the camera steady. The video made me nauseous. Sorry!
Also on my comment what useful ideas are for us to know without all the expensive gadgets that I can't afford
By the gods why would anyone convert a targa to a cab???
@ 11:42 and that's what she said 😅
What a filthy engine inside and out. Boat anchor..
mansplain af! never see anyone work on porsche stuff
