In today's video, I visit the legendary sofubi and kaiju painter, Goto-san. He's been painting Ultraman & Godzilla toys since 1966. Today he still paints sofubi for companies like Marusan, but also apprenticed modern sofubi artists like Real Head, whom he shares a lond standing relationship with.
This time, Goto-san is going to paint one of my blank 1996 flying Gamera sofubi by Marusan. Please enjoy the master at his craft.
Man all the sofubi enthusiasts should have a go fund me for him, it’s a expensive hobby so I’m sure we all got some to spare to help get his roof and workspace fixed 😢
This for sure, with how much some of these pieces go for there should be no reason for the workspace to be in such rough shape
@@yenshintoystechnically the reason they are so expensive is the molds, plastic and low numbers. Painting is the easiest and least expensive process by far. I’d chip in to help this guy though. He’s awesome!
Can someone in Japan organize it?
Yeah, I'd defs fund that.
Count me in. I'd chip in a little cash towards his roof. Living in a similar situation so I understand what it's like. He's elderly and needs the help of others.
This was a real treat! Seeing longer shots of Goto-san doing the thing he does best is so impressive. It would be easy to underestimate just HOW efficiently he's doing what he's doing.
60 years…He could donate his lungs to geneticists to prepare future generations for our microplastic atmosphere.
A true legend. And still somehow, after all these years, he still has a steady hand.
Man no masking and off the cuff. True legend.
Love the lack of a respirator and ventilation. The mark of a true OG.
When he gets older he'll regret not wearing a mask. :)
Lol how do most say its wear a mask dont do me. I paint dolls half the time I forget my own mask yes your lungs can kill over from inhaling even if you have exhaust fans in the area you paint.
@@Mr2at😂😂😂
This is what I wanted to ask.. surely you would be breathing this in no matter how careful you are? Times that by 60 years?!
60 years isn't a short time already. Without safety equipment and with chronic paint exposure it is already enough to deteriorate his health by today.
I suspect the type of paint he used. Unlike the usual paint used by model kit hobbyist, the paint in the video is weirdly fast to dry. That and other factors (diet, daily activities, air quality, etc.) may help him combat supposed disease
Goto-San, God bless you. 86 years young ! Happy Painting !
Incredible this man, not only such an honour to have an exclusive colorway painting by him but to have visited him and painted it in person. Amazing this video is absolute gold bro
🙇 🙇 🙇
@@TOKYOTOYBANZAIyou should’ve paid him handsomely to fix his shop😔
I did pay him handsomely. It's not something I would show on camera. Also, he deals with Real Head on a daily basis, whos sofubi sell for more money than any other maker.. if anyone has money to fix it, he does. But neither seem to mind.@@katielowen
@@TOKYOTOYBANZAI ah okay thanks for the heads up / clarification!
This guy is a National Treasure. I hope a petition could be put together to help him have his house rebuilt complete with new equipment. This is a very important man in the history of Japanese sofubi and Japanese toys.
What is amazing is how effortless he makes it all look. There’s an intangible value that is added to something when the person making it loves what he is doing.
Wishing Gotou-san a long, healthy life.
Really inspiring! 😊 Wish there was a way to donate to help fixing the damages.
It's inspiring that, despite what happened to his house, he continues to work and carries on with a smile and such a kind man. It's a valuable lesson, and I do hope he gets his house and workshop fixed.
Few years ago, Don introduced me to him to paint one of my toys, a very special and precious moment.

I'm lucky to know his techniques.
This video is amazing! Not every day you get a chance to have something painted by a living legend.
This was heartwarming to see. It would be wonderful if a fundraiser could be made to help give this old man a suitable roof back over his head and workshop.
That's some beautiful work, and some rad color choices.
I love when you're able to feature amazing artists like, Goto-San.
Thanks for another great one, TTB!
I legit cried for the first minute and a half of this video. Thank you for that intro
What an incredible experience and man. Thank you for this.
🙏🙏
A true legend, also great selection of colors, love the golden teeth
Man, he makes it looks so easy. I always appreciate artists and craftsmen who have been at it for decades.
This makes my heart warm and happy
60 years painting toys! I'm impressed and inspired.
Wow…a master at work
Very cool! thanks for sharing!
What a cool guy. Absolute legend.
Awesome person, I have 3 sofubi painted by him.
how beautiful! what a master!
Anytime you need soft vinyl painted, he’s the go-to guy!
that is tearfully impressive, and the man himself is a treasure
That man is 86 years old and yet he is still doing his job that man Is the goat🔥🔥🔥🔥
Wow! What an awesome privilege. A master at work 🙌
素晴らしい仕事である、この方が塗装するからこその本物感 老舗感を味わえる。本当に素晴らしい
Man, this guy is pure legend. I just have to favorite this. I just recently been thinking about old age and how I want to be important for society even in old age and guys like him is exactly what I've been thinking. Professions like writing, drawing, coloring, programming can be done at very old age without losing professionalism and excellence.
Goto San tiene amigos en Mexico por que es una leyenda 🙌
Man i want a toy from him..what a great artist...
Wonderful episode! True legend 🎌
Thanks so much John! 💫
Wow, no mask and he still lives.
it is perplexing to observe companies such as Bandai, originating from a country renowned for its meticulous and dedicated artists and craftsmen, devoting their efforts to the production of toys that have noticeably declined in quality in recent years.
60 years without mask? Solid 🫁
Legends never die 🙏🏽
Airbrushing for 60 years without a mask... This guy is immortal.
ohh yeah
This was so cool to see, especially since the VICE short documentary
Very wholesome video.
I love how you bring in the music when Goto-san starts painting.
Can't get enough of him working his magic on toys.
Thank you for making this video!
What a great video. Lovely to see a master at work. Such a steady hand for painting the small details.
Thank you so much Dave 💌 It really was such a great experience. His steady hands at this age were amazing to see in action.
THE LEGEND 🙇🙇🙇❤️❤️❤️
adorable
you're so lucky !!🥲
Oooh goto san
This is so beautiful and poetic. What a gorgeous piece of art! Goto-San's work is amazing-unique craftsmanship and authenticity. I love toys, and in Japanese culture, they embrace toys as part of their life. Thanks for sharing this.👍🤗👏
That was beautiful! Best episode ever!
Thank you very much.
very interesting video, i ve seen other video with goto-san and i m always amazed at his ability
Awesome 😎
Beautiful shop. Great job ❤😂😂
Seriously awesome dude, cherish it because that is something special. Very curious what paint Goto-san is using as it seems to dry very fast. Though might also look that way due to editing. Either way love seeing old masters at their craft, always so effortless and so much to learn from them.
Really inspiring video, such a Legend! Thank you!
This is seriously awesome. As a collector of toys he might’ve painted, as an Artist, his artistry has my *highest* respect
It turned out so beautiful ✨
Absolute legend. Looks very chaotic but I bet he knows where everything is! 😊
This here gets my HIGHEST rating: F*CKING NEAT 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🤩🤩🤩🤩
Wow such a talent! Inspired me to continue with my craft
I love that he has an air brush attached with a steel wire. I wish I could get to the airbrushing level of this guy.
this is so interesting !
Awesome video guys!
His lungs must appear like the inside of a seashell.
A wonderful video - thank you
Love this so much ❤
Sooo soo too Lucky. What a cool video but even cooler experiences.
The gamera toy looks awesome.
THIS MAN IS A GIFTED
ARTIST !!
very nice video my friend
Very cool video thanks for sharing...
absolutely a artist that loves what hes doing much respect to you sir.i would rather buy figures from man like this than the big toy companies
Amazing experience
プロが塗るソフトフィギュアは 素晴らしいです まるで岡本太郎のように芸術魂が ありますねΣ( ̄ロ ̄lll) 去年亡くなった オヤジに そっくりです 元気もらいました
Someone buy that man a ventilator mask.
❤
A true PaintMater. ❤❤
It looks cool dawg, for the short amount of time you gave him to paint, it came out cool.
The time limit wasn’t up to us 😅 Mori of RealHead is responsible for that. He meets Goto-san almost everyday for lunch and to paint together. Apparently he gets upset if people are hanging around when he shows up 🤷♂️
Wow 86...no streaks...or blotching...very impressive
I want to grow up to become Goto-San.
Japanese people is really passion & serious on their job.
❤❤❤❤❤
Great video as always. I can’t imagine asking him for particular colors though! I’d have wanted to see what he came up with himself. 🥰
I was too worried he would just paint it like all the other Gamera sofubi I already have. He even hinted that he was going to just paint it the way he painted them back when they were first released (because he painted those too), using green and blue… which I already have.
very cool
Hermosa gamera. Es el.mejor.en.pintar kaijus. Grande goto
Perfect 🎉
Okay imma subscribe now, feeling validated for my toy obsession 😂
What a sweet man ❤
Wow super awesome I would love to get a nice Godzilla painted by him or a Godzuki. Either way outstanding job
I hope that one day i get to go to japan to see all the awsome toys and meet the amazing people of japan.
Wow
Big up the man like Goto-san!
Damn, that's a long time to be breathing in all that paint. What a cool guy though.
Indeed it is... and indeed he is :)
Amazing work from an experienced professional! Does he open up his studio frequently? I'd honestly like to see if he can paint a MMS series if I brought it to him in Japan. It's not often you see someone doing sofubi work like he does, especially nowadays.
👍
This will be me in a few years time no doubt!
