Exactly! I’ve had this convo so many times! Rap was so many beautiful things before it got highjacked with themes of money, sex, greed, glorifying crime and degrading women. It literally felt like it happened in the blink of an eye. One day it’s uplifting music, good vibes, love, loving yourself and promoting community…then BOOM! Literally nothing was being promoted on the airwaves but discord, dissension, poverty mentality. Literally had to go underground music to find elevating hip hop. What we feed the mind and spirit is key. It was definitely highjacked.

Yes indeed Latifah was very important to hip hop in many ways. Latifah was the first female MC mogul with her record label, cosmetics brand deals, movies and TV shows, inspiring most other female rappers then and now, like Lauryn Hill and Nicki Minaj. She and Lauryn Hill were from NJ and Lauryn cites her as one of her major influencers.

This song was the only song my mom let me listen to (at 9 years of age) with such aggressive lyrics because the message was so powerful. Growing up in the projects, in ENY, Brooklyn, NYC, these lyrics most authentically described the reality of the world that we were experiencing at the time. My mother wanted to make sure that I knew my value growing up in such a rough environment. This song definitely shaped how I, as a young black girl, growing up in the "hood", set a standard for myself and would demand to be treated. Queen Latifah is a FORCE. Her story is so powerful and uplifting. I just wanted you both to know how important it is that you chose this song to share and analyze. Amazing pick!

I have been rocking with Queen Latifah since I was in high school (as a rapper.) I am now watching her in The Equalizer. She is amazing in everything from U.N.I.T.Y to Living Single to Set it Off to Bringing Down the House and everything in between. My Queen. 😊

She was also the warden in Chicago and did her own vocals in that. Was nominated for an oscar for best supporting artist, if I remember correctly. She sang the title track for Living Single as well. She's been a trail blazer in so many ways.

"Queen Latifah" was definitely one of the forefathers of females rap and MC's to proceed "The Real Roxanne" and "Roxanne Shontay" and a few others. Her, Monae Love, Salt and Pepa, MC Lyte, Sweet Tea to me a few pushed the female MC to another level.

Yes! Queen Latifah is not to be played with. She made the news before because some people tried to car jack her. If I'm not mistaken, she pulled a gun on them and she was not robbed. You should check out the music video for that song. You'll notice that she's wearing a golden key on a necklace. That necklace is for her brother who died in an accident on a motorcycle she bought him. With that, you'll understand all of the motorcycles in the video. Queen Latifah is DOPE and this is one of my all time favorite songs.
