Harley Heat Management System, DO NOT OVERRIDE IT

  • Harley heat management is a real thing and you may actually be unknowingly overriding the system when you need it the most. Late model fuel injected Harley-Davidson motorcycles have a feature which actually richens the air fuel ratio when high head temperatures are present. If you've ever been sitting at a light and the idle speed drops down around 900 RPMS, that's the heat management system doing its job. Now if you like to rack your pipes at the stop lights, your actually overriding this system and generating more heat when the engine is trying to cool itself down. Harley heat management is another great feature of the late model closed loop fuel injected system which works great if you let it do its job.

    Thanks for the explanation of the inner workings of the engine cooling protections. I have a 110 and started it in the garage went inside and totally forgot the bike was running. 45-1 hour later ran out and the bike was running rough and had the worst smell of burnt oil. I immediately shut it off and let it cool down then immediately changed the oil. To my surprise there was no lasting damage with the internal operation and the bike has been running great (2011 RGU CVO) it’s great to understand what happens, the causes and how to prevent mindless mistakes…that’s where you and other knowledge keepers come in, educating those of us who may not know or just need better understanding. EITMS is not for engine overheat but for rider comfort. As per Harley Davidson service manual “To improve rider comfort on all stock touring model motorcycles a optional heat management system” has nothing to do with engine protection. Several people have done testing and proven head temps don’t change when in EITMS

    14.7:1 is the stoichiometric ratio where the most complete burn happens. It's neither rich or lean. Rich or lean is in reference to either side of this ratio. A smaller number means richer, a greater number means lean.
    By definition, a bike cannot be running lean if it's at the perfect stoichiometric ratio (which happens to be 14.7:1).

    14 fat boy stage 2 with the oil cooler. If I run it below 80 on the interstate my temp goes to 230. Pop off into the city for some side Street city action going slower more gear shifts and my temp goes to 260 after 5-10 miles. I’m at altitude and run 12 months a year, May through September can be challenging if it’s 90+. Good job on explaining it. So sitting in traffic jams more than 10 minutes is bad. We would benefit our bikes more if we could Lane Split at the 1150 rpms in first/2nd gear to run air over engine. Be nice if Harley could maybe make Open Loop more rich when idling more than 10 minutes to cool down engine if it doesn't cause engine problems. I just can't see some States passing Lane Splitting. Would like to hear what you think 🤔. Or do video on Lane Splitting how it would benefit the bike and people in cages. If the rider doesn't nice Lane Splitting than don't do it. I believe in Low Speed Lane Splitting, my State doesn't believe in any Lane Splitting. Also when the Milwaukee 8 goes bigger to 131 it will run hotter. I know Harley has to meet EPA stuff, put do aftermarket? Maybe a test override switch to run bike rich to cool down riding in parades an desert roads, the back door option for us all.

  • @cascadesouthernmodeltrains7547

    I had a 2004 Dyna with a fuel injected 88 twin cam and ran into one trip where I was stuck in traffic on a hot day and when the bike got too hot it would misfire. It seemed to be dropping the cylinder in a pattern and I figured it was from either the temps or the computer trying to cool the bike a bit more. I killed the engine and just walked the bike forward as traffic moved. When we were clear of the accident, the bike had cooled enough to not miss when I fired it back up.

    I'm new to Harley bikes with a 2016 street glide special that I just bought. I just took it to the dealership about this. Tuesday it was 91 degrees. Rode the bike home for a 30 min riding on 4 lane highway and it didn't kick in. Got back on it rode 90 miles to the dealer on I-80 and just before i pulled in, the temp on the bike was 83 degrees and it kicked in. Sometimes it would sound like its going to throw a rod or piston out of the block! 1 time it kicked in within 2 or 3 minutes after a startup.
    I bought the bike in April and have put 2,000 miles on it for a total of 8,000
    The dealership is telling me if I don't like the heat management system on, turn it off! I know better than that.
    The question I have to you is, How or what do i need to say to get them to look at the system. I'm told by other owners have theirs on and
    they are not having their bikes heat management come.

    that' very interesting. i have i think actually heard a bike idle down, i just thought the person stopped throttling. any way, living in Florida, that's one reason i ride a water cooled Honda. also my old age, skinny ass likes the absence of the extra 200 lbs. Harley's are great bikes, the heat from the engine on any bike rises, so it's hot no matter what you ride. so it's always better to keep moving, instead of stopping for every damn red light.

      ThunderMax ECM is a good product and is easy to get help if you need it from support. I have it on my wife’s 117” 2008 FXDB but what really helped was the Zippers Blueprinted Fueling cam plate that raised the relief PSI. Im sure most know the Twin Cam Plate is cast and has potential to leak do to porosity dropping oil pressure below 35 psi. Axtell and Biasley getting a stiffer spring will raise relief.

  • @mikekellam365
    @mikekellam365 Před 2 lety

    Blipping the throttle does NOT lean out the exhaust. If it's in open loop and the ECM sees a rapid rise in throttle position, it performs the same action an accelerator pump in a carb does: it injects a larger dose of fuel to prevent the engine from stumbling from fuel starvation on acceleration. It does this by lengthening the injector pulse width to supply more fuel for a few milliseconds. NOW, Blipping and then HOLDING the throttle open for a few seconds while at a standstill CAN lean your engine out and cause a rapid rise in cylinder head temp. Additionally, the drop in RPM at idle when the engine is getting extremely hot is due to EITMS activation: (Assuming EITMS is Enabled) EITMS is Engine Idle Temperature Management System and operates by shutting down (turning off the fuel injector) the REAR cylinder, thus turning it into an air pump, moving cooler intake air through the cylinder and combustion chamber to cool the engine. Hence the lower idle speed. This will be indicated by the Cruise Control indicator turning green while at idle. The throttle sensor must be below 5% and head temp above a preset based on ambient temp, and bike stopped. Any increase throttle sensor, or vehicle speed, or decrease in temps beyond the preset will immediately resume rear cylinder operation and the idle will again rise to approximately 1000 RPM.
