  • This is a Sony PVM 2030 that would not power on at all. After opening the CRT, it was easy to see why. Can I get this beautiful masterpiece of pro-video hardware to power on again? This is a CRT repair video you won't want to miss.

I just want to give out some respect to you for repairing those wonderful machines. We really need people like you in the retro-gaming community, because all of our, especially consumer CRTs will need repair as time passes, sometime.

My Sony PVM 2030 and 2530 work with Sony consumer TV remotes I have from 1984 and 2007. I wish their receivers had such broad interoperability.

Nice save! It's fortunate the disconnected cable from the flyback didn't short out on something, or energize the chassis and become a shock hazard - good thing you noticed it.

Man, I get anxiety working on regular consumer sets, but just seeing you work on these tightly packed professional tubes makes me feel dizzy

Super helpful, thanks so much! I have vertical collapse on my PVM 2030 and trying to learn what the issue is. Great ressource for learning how to repair this guy!

I love how overengineered those units are, I remember tearing apart my 9042QM (which is just a plain old 8042Q but adapted to run on 240V 50Hz) and saw how tightly packed it was inside, just like on the 2030/2130QM you can swing out some of the boards.
    Pretty cool IMHO.

I too am a big fan and now supporter! I have a 2530 that is shaking! I talked to a few who said to throw it out! I know you can save it! I love that PVM!

It's impossible for those older models to avoid having at least one corner wonky as hell. That's because of the shape of the screen itself. It's just not possible to fit the raster into it without some sacrifices in the corners. One of the corners would always end up worse than the others.

I have a Sony PVM 20M4U that turns on but doesn’t show video until I let it sit for several minutes and then it slowly fades in with wonky geometry until it’s fully warmed up.
I live in the greater Charlotte, NC, area, so would it be feasible to drive the unit to you for examination and repair? I bought a cap kit I found on a forum for this monitor, but when I went to take it apart it looked pretty intimidating for my novice soldering skills.

Really wish you were closer I have a PVM 20L2MD just sitting in my garage that was damaged in shipment. It can get power but the button to turn the monitor on is cracked and broke off sadly :/

Hello brother, I have the same TV, when I turn it on for a while, the picture disappears and the sound remains. What is the reason for that, if possible?

Dust. Dust frying. ...open up the plastic back. Wow down the back with alcohol. Clean the vents. Use anti-static brushes to brush the dust off the circuit boards. Brush lightly. Make sure the nervous is securely connected. Reconnect the plastic back.
If is previous owner smoked, the smell you are smelling, is sticky nicotine. Alcohol may clean it, but you run the risk of snapping off components, if you clean it too hard.

If it smells like ozone it can be the high voltage arcing on the suction cup.
