But Walter, since you were involved in the drafting of the EP, why is there still a way for the government of the day to overrule the President’s veto by gaining a 2/3 majority in parliament. With today’s scenario, where there is a supermajority, the government can easily achieve this by exercising the whip.

The fact is that nobody can be non-political. Everybody has views and opinions aligning with a certain political faction. The political scene in Singapore has been badly polarized so the underlying intentions of the voting population makes the concept of a non-partisan presidency a non-starter. Just look at the 3 candidates and the people supporting them. Opposition politicians aren't sophisticated enough to have differing views on the use of the reserve which does not involve a social agenda. It's their only promise to the people. The problem with that was the Governor General was not elected, but Gough Whitlam was. The Governor General of any Commonwealth Realm should exercise his/her power much like how a reigning monarch that is not elected should. The Governor General veered of constitutional convention at the time, it would be like if King Charles III dismisses Rishi Sunak now and called for a general election. Looking at the polls, the Labour party would most likely win in the UK much like how the opposition leader Malcolm Fraser won the subsequent Australian federal election against Gough Whitlam. Actually my point is that we must not choose a president who with the intention using such custodial powers as an instant. That should be used as last resort. Be clear, Singapore did not inherit British system completely, its a partial cherries picking system Singapore inherited. In UK, they hv monarch, which is completely neutral from political system, Singapore President is appointed by ruling party, how neutral can such president be is questionable.

Ong teng cheong for one was politically neutral even though he was from PAP. He questioned the govt on the use of reserve funds and earnings and how to use it. He was the one that suggested the half half policy we now use today.
He also independently called for all assets to be known.
After your explanation, i realise Tharman is not suitable for the presidency AT ALL. He has always been a "Yes Sir 3 bags full" kind of minister that has been cruising along his entire career. And also he is still a director in the shady WEF organisation as of now. If he ever becomes a president, does he pledge his allegiance to his WEF boss or to Singaporeans?
