    Hi CNA, any chance of renaming this 5-part series differently from "Singapore Reserves Revealed", or at least make it clearer in the title that this is the 2nd subseries after the 1st subseries with PM Lee released ytd? I initially found it confusing when the 3-part series done with PM Lee was named similarly and I thought you guys reuploaded the same videos, but they are vastly different. Some ppl may not know that there are 2 subseries to this topic and miss out on either of it which will be a waste because I found this documentary hugely helpful to understand our reserves and how it came to be as a Singaporean.

    "So, when I came in in 1993, I asked for all this information about the reserves. It took them three years to give it to me. But they said it would take 56-man years to produce a dollar-and-cents value of the immovable assets"

    • @cktalon7519
      @cktalon7519 Před 9 měsíci +1

      Immovable assets = Singapore land like roads, not financial assets. See CNN interview:
      So the government had been stonewalling you, the president, for three years?
      Yes. What happened actually was, as you know, in accounting, when you talk about reserves, it's either cash reserves or assets reserves. The cash side is straightforward: investment, how many million dollars here and there, how much comes from the investment boards and so on. That was straightforward -- but still we had to ask for it. For the assets, like properties and so on, normally you say it's worth $30 million or $100 million or whatever. But they said it would take 56-man years to produce a dollar-and-cents value of the immovable assets. So I discussed this with the accountant-general and the auditor-general and we came to a compromise. The government would not need to give me the dollar-and-cents value, just give me a listing of all the properties that the government owns.

    Glad that the Singapore government has started to be more forthcoming about what our reserves exactly are, given how mythologised it has become.
    I can understand why they have to be so hush-hush about it; if anything happens to these reserves, our entire country and its people will be screwed beyond belief. Obviously they will have to be very selective about what gets revealed, but it still is very welcome to see this level of transparency and forthcomingness. Hopefully this better educates people and helps dispels persistent myths about it.

    It's interesting. I'm more curious about the idea behind why Singapore had to make this video? Why make things so complicated instead of just buying US dollars? It doesn't matter how much money they have in reserve, that money will melt away overnight if they can't prove to their allies that they are trustworthy, because it's still a small economy.
    therefore, the key is to show to the international community how much faith Singapore has in the democratic values of the free world, not how much gold they have.

    I am not against Singapore but Big Government that excludes a small society in charting private wealth. Government is excessively large or unconstitutionally involved in certain areas of public policy or the private sector. inbreeds a system of social control under which the right to make laws, and the right to enforce them, is vested in a particular group in society. Politically incorrect.

    $10b Gold Only? GIC plonked S$14b in UBS MCN (2 yrs) in 2008...what happened? Sold @ loss 2/3 of total only after 10 yrs when LKY, as GIC Chair said GIC was in it for 20-30 years! Also plonked US$6.8b into Citigroup convertible in Jan 2008 supposedly @ >US$ 30 per share. But for TARP, Citigroup convertible would hv ZERO value if under conservatorship!. Why go so far? Even when we sleep in Singapore, we are already paying tonnes of GST and other fees. In other democratic economies you can actually see and hear the country"s overseas investment profits work for the people and infrastructure. Till this day, the buses are old and even the engine of one this afternoon was roaring violently and loudly from the outside as it made its way to Sentosa. And just look at the pavement. ,always patchy and ugly just like PAP.
