I saw the foot and thought, "Well, surely this will be the most unexpected thing in the video."
But then he made a square from 2 circles.
+Druidtton Darksun for a sec I was like: "wait, why does he have an extra hand?"
nah son...
+Druidtton Darksun I was "Hu... all the comments are going to be about that" :)
+Druidtton Darksun "All these squares make a circle..."
+Hank Scorpio That was the first thing I thought of.
Why doesn't James Grime ever use his feet for any of his mathematics?
+Simon G I'll ask
+Simon G xD
+Numberphile best comment ever
+Simon G I imagine it is quite a feat!
+Simon G Because he still has his hooves. He's removed the horns just to be more convincing on the video.
1. He totally understands the topic.
2. He WANTS to show it to you.
Two qualities that are almost non-existent in most teachers.
and teachers that do have those qualities are ALWAYS awesome luckily most of my teachers were like that in year 12 where it really mattered :D
You talking about his feet?😂
what i aspire to be if i ever become a teacher c:
i mean most teachers have 1, now having 2 is a different story
Agreed the most fascinating teacher I ever had
Well this is the fist time I've seen someone do mathematical presentation using feet. Truly an innovator in the field of education.
I just noticed that after this comment
23kl104 Tadashi is famous for this.
Tarantino approves
My thoughts, exactly 😅.
??
I like this guy. =) He's fun to watch.
Same here this one was pretty cool video I like it, interesting accent he has
+Brian Cramer He knows how to pronounce Möbius!
+Erik did you take your profile picture?
Same he's cool.
Yanni Tsetsekos I did, yes. =)
"I'm going to apply the violence"
I like this man, more videos with Prof Tokieda please
+PureZOOKS more coming
You like violence? Me too
😂
when he popped his foot out, i lost it 😂
That was a foot? I thought it was a square of hearts!

??
Why did the chicken cross the Möbius strip? To get to the same side!
+Andrew Bulman
Actually this makes me wonder... would there be a speed limit on a Möbius strip? For instance, at what speed would you have to go in order to be traveling through your own wind-tunnel and suffocate?
+Pseudo Lain
Ask those motorcyclists who ride around the inside of those giant spheres.
EGarrett01
Well, that's a little different from what I imagined, which was a bisected tube but meh
Pseudo Lain
Yeah, but it's still an infinite surface where you loop back on the space you just left pretty quickly.
+Andrew Bulman Didn't know that one :D I laughed so hard I almost overturned my chair. Luckily it's ball-shaped ;)
Why weren't loops made from brown paper?
+dominikstepien2000 i feel like that's a poop joke, but i'm not quite sure.
+Bacon CheeseCake no numberphilia always uses brown paper to write down things and as a background for animations
אדיר ברק oh, well now i feel lika a childish idiot.
+Bacon CheeseCake
Haha, don't feel bad. It's the internet, stay here long enough and anyone would end up like this
Pseudo Lain that makes sense.
If he would be 20-30 years younger, doing this while sitting in a corner... everyone would call him insane, but yeah, he is a mathematician, so noone here is surprised :D
this statement is very true lol
+Ninjin Mathematicians really can be insane without being surprising. Look at Cliff and his Klein bottles
David Joffe-Hunter What have you done! :D Somehow I didn't see it in my subscription...
+Ninjin
Mathematicians ARE insane. It's a job requirement.
Xavier Fuentes
Yeah, I went slightly off the requirements route
he's got a fun voice. i especially like the way he says "mobius"
+j0nthegreat My son on the other side of the room thought he was saying boobies.
+j0nthegreat Well, that is almost how you pronounce it in german and also in Swedish. We in the Northern European countries have quiet a funny accent :)
+j0nthegreat moobius
+j0nthegreat
Möbius ( "To pronounce the ö-sound, say “ay” as in day. While continuing to make this sound, tightly round your lips. Look in a mirror to make sure your lips are actually rounded." )
+KILROY Jenkins What? In Norwegian, it's more akin to the "u" in church
One minute in, foot is already out.
Great footage!
Boom tish
+MineralManiac Ba dum tss
+MineralManiac xDDDDDDDDDD
:D
Nice.
At 1:57 "...and now you're thinking Tadashi can't count...". lol
Those two mobius strips turning into 2 hearts was so unexpected. You could say its an example of the beauty of mathematics lol😅
More of this guy please.
YES
This guy is genuinely one of the most (seemingly) passionate ones I've seen featured on numberphile. He got his pedagogy on lockdown and acts very charming but still devoted to keep his audience drawn in. Great guy and video!
I had a lecture from Mr Tokieda earlier this year at KCL, and I can say that he is just as interesting in person as he is in this video. It's so apparent how clever this guy is!
did he just... SQUARE A CIRCLE?
My thoughts exactly! :)
He did this 2O^2
??
*This would be an amazing trick to get married isnt it?*
+rasput1n6 but he didn't show what happens with same chirality marriages
+YouCanHasAccount he does in part 2, link in the description
+Chris Berry still not yet. I assume that he will explain in part 3.
+Michael Nguyen
No, he showed it in part 2.
Same chirality marriage is unnatural.
I
+Michael Schepis do share it then!
+Numberphile Don't worry, I'm sure it will end up on facebook on someone else's account.
+Michael Schepis
I do εx3 it, too.
This video would probably get a lot more views if the thumbnail was his foot lololol
Has Tadashi appeared in other videos? I reallly like the way he explains things, hope to see more of him :)
+Gustav Einarsson Yes, he has a lecture series on introductory Topology, I highly recommend it. He does a few more examples of this kind in the first lecture, what I will say is that an introductory course in Linear Algebra will give you a bit more insight into some of his examples and exercises but other than that it's pretty self contained given that you have at least gone through introductory undergrad Calculus, that is what I would say is the minimum amount of mathematical rigor that you should be exposed to before taking this course, at least if you want to go through the whole thing. But if you'd just like to hear him talk you could watch the introduction lecture to that course, it's pretty damn entertaining.
My favorite mathematician, now on Numberphile! Doesn't get any better!
what about mk mobius strips with the same chirality?
+reubensugars czcams.com/video/mh3eMt09EAs/video.html
This would be a really cool trick to do at the wedding like making the first two and quiet dissapoiting them and then making möbius against möbius and surprising them nicely ^^
Why did the chicken cross the Möbius strip?
To get to the same side.
Sheldon Lee Cooper
Bazinga
I love how the camera shakes and zoomed in violently as if it was a comedy skit type of a video
I love watching this guy. He's so entertaining. I think it may just be because hes kind of silly (I mean, he's sitting on the floor and held the paper with his toes) and obviously passionate about showing us something that most people might see as mundane, but he wants to show us how cool it is.
First time in a long time I've genuinely not known what's going to go happen next on a math/logic vid, absolutely enrapturing
Now, this was something. A long time since i've had so much fun watching a Numberphile video. Awesome voice, awesome topic and surprise feet.
what is with numberphile and mobius loops?
+Matt Ward yeah it's a really one-sided video.
+Tom Rivlin True, but they do go on and on forever about them. It's some kind of twisted obsession, really. They seem singularly minded about it all.
[Insert more moebius puns here]
+Matt Ward Because it has a lot of interesting properties, can be used for fun practical things like this and can serve as a springboard for talking about universes with four spatial dimensions.
+KlaxonCow Ha!
+Matt Ward Mobius loops are awesome.
Favourite videos on this channel for a while. Love this guy. More Tadashi!
One of my favorite Numberphile videos. Great topic, great pace, great person
I tried this out when I read Matt Parker's book. It never occurred to me to use a cross to make those linked loops though. Wish I'd known about that trick earlier.
He actually used his foot in this video, lol. :D
"Apply in all sorts of contexts, and I hope you make good use of it" Bringing mathematics into the real world, very well done :)
I'd like to see more of this man in your videos.
He's so well spoken and genuine.
More from this guy in the future please! He seems very intelligent and he makes it personal and fun
Delightful!
A very enjoyable video. Thank you.
Brady, Mr. Tokieda is FANTASTIC!! Please can we have future videos with him because this was one of my favourite videos you've ever made.
Super-awesome - eagerly awaiting part #2 and the extra videos!
+Jason “cyberspace entity” Doe Psst, look in the description ;) Part 2 is unlisted, there's a link there.
3:41 chöp chöp
love the clarity in his explanation
This guy is fantastic. More of him please.
Oh my gosh, I am watching Tadashi Tokieda. I love this guy and I love you for having him on Numberphile.
I can listen to professor Tadashi Tokieda and Terence Tao all day errday🙏
This was incredibly interesting, and Tokieda is an amazing presenter.
Wow amazing! Such a beautiful thing. I need to see its e.q. on the blackboard too!
Brilliant video
This guy is great! Loved this one.
This guy is awesome! Would love to see more from him. I thought my days of being entertained with paper, tape and scissors were over
Tokieda-san is wonderful. I would love to see more videos with him. His voice is golden.
This has to be the best numberphile video I have seen so far.
This was a very interesting video! Mr. Tokeida's hands (and feet!) on explanations are very nice to watch and listen. And now I have a little trick to make some hearts! Thank you, Brady and Mr. Tokeida, for this.
very interesting, looking forward to more vids with this guy :)
Should have waited til valentines to do this
This is awesome. A new "twist" on an old trick!
As a high schooler who loves maths, my mind was blown to know that shape other than circles can show up at unexpected places
One of the coolest videos recently.
More of Tadashi please! He is very good at explaining exactly what is going on, I can tell he would be an excellent teacher.
OMG! This needs more views!!! That's so cool!
MIND BLOWN
The beauty is in the simplicity. This was pretty cool.
I could watch him cut loops in half all day! :) He's delightful.
My new favourite Numberphiler!
i am fan of this guy....awesome episodes!
Fun stuff. More from him!
this is legendary , Prof. Tadashi Tokieda on a numberphile video
Excuse me while I pick up the pieces of my blown mind.
I quite like these videos - more like these would be great! I am sure they can be formalised a bit more as well!
When a mathematician gets rid of his socks to show you geometric objects you know he is getting serious
I really like Tadashi Tokieda, his explanations are really good!
This man was born to be in front of a camera. Please have more with him. He blew my mind and I'm sure he has even better stuff
I just started watching some lectures from this guy
This precise paper trick helped me get through a hospital stay. when you only have paper and tape, this is how I sculpt.
This guy is so awesome.
That guy has a seriously soothing voice
I could watch this guy cut papers all day long. Awesome Video.
1:10 "In order to do this I am going to apply the violence."
So simple, yet so complex. This was so cool.
Fascinating.
3:43 Literally gave me goosebumps- (Mobius strip into 1/3 Loona member's representative shapes)
Shout-out to all orbits and babybits delving deep into the loonaverse at midnight! 🌚🌟
dude
haseul is back!
I would really like to see more of this guy.
It's Professor Tadashi! AHHH! :D I love his lectures from the AMS!
Unexpected shapes indeed. Very cool!
For some reason, this is captivating!
This was a really fun video.
Dr. Tokieda has a very pleasant voice.
You find the best professors to feature in these videos. :D
I am going to go cut up so much paper now
fantastic!
Unexpected, and wonderful.
Tadashi's voice makes me happy inside
I was messing around with these, and cut a strip off of each side simultaneously, with pretty neat results.
If you take a Mobious strip and fold it in half all the way around, you run into a problem that seems to say the shape is not really "one sided." I mean, aside from the fact that you can see both sides of it.
I found this video extremely relaxing.
I love this man!!!
I gotta say this was genuinely interesting. And fun.
0:50 Sofa so good^^
This man is wonderful
awesome..... love this Method ❤️❤️❤️
