      I did that as well -- and then calculated the cost (not including the masses of things that have already been decluttered). THAT was an eye opener & tear jerker. So whenever I want to purchase a new thing, I open my spreadsheet, look at the numbers & usually it is enough to deter the purchase urge.

  • @berlineczka
    @berlineczka Před 4 lety +93

    Another tip. Ask yourself: do you want to buy it because it's pretty or because you will look pretty wearing it?
    What I mean by that if you wear warm shades and do not look good in cooler tones, skip the Sultry palette (I did!). If you look your best in cooler or neutral tones, skip the very warm palettes (e.g. Zoeva Cocoa Blend or Opulence). If you only wear basic neutrals, skip the rainbow coloured palette. And so on. *Makeup is to be worn, not to be looked at in the packaging.* If you realistically do not wear certain colours (either because they do not suit you or you do not like them) or they make you look sick - skip the makeup in these colors, no matter how pretty the makeup piece as a thing is.

    Project panning is the most effective way to curb your makeup spending, imo.. it really makes you see how long it will take you to use up products.. it doesn't always work when you watch other people do project pans because the way you use makeup might be different and it could take you longer to use up the same product..

      mmmkkk987 agreed. It helps so much with my perception of makeup and saves money. We need to hold ourselves more responsible for the things we buy especially financially and environmentally. I have way too many eyeshadow palettes. I feel like they are the “shiny objects” of the makeup world and become something people want to collect, forgetting that they are a consumable product. I realized after a few months of wanting everything new and making some mistakes that I can find similar shades to almost anything in my collection - at least the ones that I will ACTUALLY wear. Pretty but not something I will use is wasteful for me. (For example, I like neutrals but won’t buy the Tati palette because I would never wear those glitters. Too many shades wasted.). Great video!

  • @imaginarycosmetics
    @imaginarycosmetics Před 4 lety +10

    I think when it comes to eyeshadow palettes in particular an inventory of every shade is helpful too, if you know you already have 20 midtoned browns, 10 golds, 10 rosegolds and 5 blacks in your collection, it's easier to say no to a palette that contains those shades as well. It's also easier to see the "holes" in your collection and so you can maybe invest in some singles to complete what's missing. Something like temptalia's vanity is great, it shows you dupes within your collection and wishlist items.

    I usually buy singles that have their own packaging. I like 1-2 shadow looks, so it's not unpractical for me. Sure, it's not the most cost-efficient if you look at price per shadow, but usually singles have a lot more product in them.
    I can use up only 1-2 pans worth of eyeshadow a year, which means I wouldn't be able to finish an entire palette before it goes bad anyway.
    Also by buying singles I don't accumulate too much stuff. Instead, I can get new ones several times a year if I want to. so my eyeshadow collection starts to feel fresh and exciting again :)

    YES thank you ! It also seems like every youtuber I watch is dropping a collection or a collab at the same time right now... I know that can be harder to resist because you feel like you need to "support" and seeing them constantly posting about the subscribers who bought it on instagram kind of makes me feel like I'm missing out.. but remember that we are supporting them simply by watching their videos (/ads) and interacting with them. Sadly I physically can't buy merch or products from every youtuber I like, that would be crazy haha. I also say that especially after the Shane and Jeffree collab, I've seen so many people say "I don't ever wear makeup but I need the palette because I want to support Shane/Jeffree" or something like that and it kind of makes me sad. I mean who knows it might awaken a new passion for some people but in general it just seems like a big waste of money

    There are two palettes I really want. The UD Born to Run and ABH Soft Glam. They have been out for a while so I know I actually want them, but the question is if I will use them. Soft Glam is easier to use than Born to Run because It’s all neutrals, but Born to Run still calls to me.

      I have both palettes, and I really like them. Each one is different with it's own personality. So, you won't be duplicating any colors. You can either wait for a sale, or you can get dupes from Ccolor Cosmetics - www.ccolorcosmetics.com/collections/eyes?page=1 - if the price of the OGs is a bit much for you. Their "Around the World" palette is their Born To Run dupe, and "Prestige" is their Soft Glam dupe. The reviews have been very good for Ccolor products. There are videos reviewing Around the World, but I don't know if there are any for Prestige. I have a couple of their palettes myself and am satisfied with them. HTH! ~Anastacia in Cleveland

    I always appreciate these videos you create to remind us all how to reduce our desire for the newest product or palette. I like the single pan solution, but buying better quality also works for me. Knowing I only need a few top shelf products helps to curb my appetite. When I can say to myself, this is so amazing I don’t need another, I stop myself from thinking the next thing on the market might be better and it’s only $.. .., so I can afford it. I can’t tell you the amount of money I’ve wasted on drugstore products that were hyped as just as good as midrange to premium brands.

    Loved this video one thing I’ve started doing is keeping a list through out the year of palettes that come out that I think I want when they come out and wait until holiday sales or the best yearly sales and waiting for when I hit a certain quantity of points at ulta or Sephora and then go back and look at those palettes using most of the methods you discussed and then decide what to purchase unless it’s a limited action palette that I absolutely know I don’t have and will use plus waiting to put all the palettes through the year in one cart really helps me see how many I’m looking at and how much I’m actually going to be sending added up together

    Keeping a picture of my palettes help me decide what shades I own a ton of and what shades could be a nice addition, this helps avoid duplication. Also I started panning, it gave me a better idea of how long it actually takes to use up an item🤦🏻‍♀️
    I also wait at least a month or 2 before buying a palette, this gives more time for as much reviews as possible to come out and for me to find out if i REALLY like this palette or not.
    Also sometimes I sit down and have a swatch party where I match shades that I never used together before so I can have new looks out of what I own. (Like you said I ALWAYS mix and match between my palettes, it will change how you look at your collection completely!)

    I am currently on a no buy and this video totally hit home with me when you spoke about covering up shadows to see if we still love the palette. My last palette purchased was the ABH Jackie Aina palette. I had no interest in it really even though my favorite formula is ABH but when I saw it in person, I was mesmerized by 2 shades, (especially the shade "trust issues") . If I had done this when I saw the palette, I would not have purchased it LOL...Thank you for pointing out these great tips!

    I have a virtual vanity on Temptalia and every time a new palette comes out, I use the check for dupes in vanity function and dupe it out easily that way. Sometimes I’ll end up buying a single shadow if I don’t have a dupe for a shade I like.

    I'm doing a low buy and a project pan and what actually is occurring to me is that I don't even want to buy or wear much makeup anymore the less I wear the more comfortable I am without it I've basically decided to do a tinted moisturizer, a lip and maybe a concealer for under eye shadows and possibly a eyeliner on my bottom lids I'm just going to get eyelash extensions and my brows done but that's it my boyfriend has really helped me get over my insecurities.

    I just get the single eyeshadow like color pop. I only use one shade in the bigger pallets and the rest don’t fit my complexion. It is also cheaper and easier to pack while going on trips

    The first tip is so relatable to me. For example, I really liked the volume 1 of the new norvina anastasia beverly hills palette but I can't buy it (because it's really expensive). I really loved that palette so much when it released and now I wouldn't purchase it even if I had the money.. I just think to wait is so wise because that initial excitment can go away and u may not use it as much as you initially thought you would

    What works for me is looking at the feeling an order will give me before I place it, I never impulse buy anymore and usually let something sit in my cart for a few days first before I get to that last part, if there’s any type of guilt it’s a no and if it would just bring me joy it’s a yes. If I’d feel guilty there’s something not right with the purchase, whatever the reason is, too much money, more of the same, money that can better be spent on something else, spending just to spend, not enough nice colors to justify the purchase, following a hype, etcetera, if the feeling I get is negative it’s not worth it.

    I've been on a no buy for 2 months now. It has totally changed my view. I'm using everything up, so I'm not being wasteful and I'm saving money! I am so tempted with this Sephora sale though, but I'm not giving in!

    My biggest tip is to unfollow a huge chunk of all the beauty stuff on social media. Only follow the channels you feel connected to and actually watch 3/4 videos. Don’t follow brands on social media. I only follow Beauty News to stay up to date and that’s fine by me now. Also delete the damn apps! Don’t have the Sephora or Ulta apps on your phone tempting you.

    Try to dupe it.
    I try to dupe palettes in my head by remembering what I have but my brain image is not as accurate as I think. I NEED to sit down and try to dupe it by swatching and comparing, the exercise guarantees that I will correctly point out the ones I am missing

      I watched a video once where the girl went to Sephora and swatched a full palette on her arm and then went home with them on her arm and looked for dupes in her stash. I was watching like, "THIS LADY IS A GENIUS!" lol 👏😂

    I totally agree. Maybe in your country is not so popular but in mine buying in aliexpress, especially clothes. It is nonsense. We all work to have a better planet and people buy 1000 of clothes. I would understand if it is a good quality but in 80% is really bad 😭😢

    I have 20 palettes plus 2 filled with singles and I feel like I don't need anymore eyeshadow honestly I have a lot of colors and only 2 eyes! But for some reason eyeshadow is my 'makeup weakness'. Palettes always catch my eye, go on wishlists, and I'm not an impulsive shopper, but it will be months later and I am still wanting these palettes. There are releases from ND, CP, and Nabla that I've had saved for awhile. I've been waiting for the 'right' release from Dominique Cosmetics and now there's Tati's brand and I think her palette is stunning. I guess it's good that I'm waiting, but I also wish I would stop wanting stuff 😅

    Do you have a single that could be a dupe for that matte sea foam green looking one in the Muerte palette coming out by Melt? I want the whole palette but I can get singles to pass for most of the shades... just can’t find that sea foam color 😓

    I feel silly making this comment because I am accountable for my own choices and purchasing habits. I just feel like I give myself every excuse to purchase something. I purchased several items because I wanted to try out the formula. I purchased a palette because it would be good to pan next year. I purchased items because they are cruelty free. I purchased items because they were on sale. Give me a reason and I will justify that darn purchase. I had one palette two years ago. I have forty today. My no buys last a day. I will keep trying. I graduated college with honors. This isn’t a difficult concept. Rant over. 😩

    For me it works visualizing the looks I could do with the palette, which ocasions I would wear them for, which first impression I would be giving by wearing it, and even if my wardrobe would support those looks or clash with them. Since I'm in the process of making my wordrobe all natural fiber and sustainably produced, but maintaining a classic and professional style, it's taking away a lot of unviable looks. 🤷

  • @YukinoMayazawa

    As much as I love makeup, I'm also a thrifty person, so I tend to wait for a sale to buy new makeup. By the time a decent sale comes up, the hype has died and more reviews have come out, and I've probably already moved on.
    So this kind of goes hand in hand with just simply waiting lol
