  • San Diego, CA. Gentle waves provide the mechanical disruption which induces natural bioluminescence in this coastal algal bloom. Above-average water temperatures, mild currents and recent rains (nutrient-rich runoff) are the main factors that provide the ideal environment for microalgal proliferation. Not all algal blooms (red tides) produce bioluminescence, nor are all algal blooms/red tides dangerous (but some can be). These bioluminescent blooms in southern California coastal waters and elsewhere have increased over the past decade. We get our video tagged as political speech if we scientifically hypothesize why this is occurring more frequently. So you will have to guess why.
