  • We've all heard they're slow...but how slow are they? Is it really as bad as people say it is, or are the rumors true? Today we put Six Flags America to the test and time their train dispatches!

    I used to work at a theme park years ago in the rides department. I can understand the long time it takes to load/unload & dispatch trains out of the station. Although I will admit a great deal of the long wait time is due to either employee laziness or the lack of working at an efficient tempo with guests, the other part of it is also because some riders (usually the older folks) are nearly in a hurry to board the train and often take their time to remove their personal items and then get comfy & cozy before pulling their lap bars down or seat belts on. In this case of this video, you've definitely exposed a fatal flaw in ride operations, not just this park but virtually in most if not all parks around the world. One thing to keep in mind is that these are your regular, mostly teenaged workers making minimum wage for the summer, but they need to realize that it's their JOB to provide the park guests with the best experience possible.

Europa Park and Phantasialand, for example, are extremely efficient in dispatching the coasters. @CoasterStudios  Před 8 lety +71

      No, that's not it at all. I think you're missing the point. Most parks are not this slow- on some coasters, ride ops can have the train out in less than 60 seconds AND ensure everyones safe. You can be fast and keep riders safe. I'm not saying they should sacrifice safety to be fast, because that's not what I think at all. Safety is always #1 priority. The point is to see how fast they can be while guests are secured and safe.

    • @chaoticxcandy
      @chaoticxcandy Před 8 lety +21

      Look at Cedar Point. Their dispatch times are crazy fast and they never have any incidents with people falling out of cars, seatbelts unbuckling or anything like that. I work at Cedar Point and from this past Summer's time slots, it looks like Raptor had the fastest dispatch times in under 30 seconds, and there aren't any freak accidents on there. Like Coaster Studios said, safety is the #1 priority, but obviously their ride operations are not pushing them to move quickly because I can only imagine how backed up the lines get when you go to an amusement park like Six Flags.

    • @shroomyesc

    Back in 2008, I went to SFA with some friends. Tried to get on Joker's Jinx, but it broke down when we were at the front of the line. Fortunately they gave us passes to get on another ride, so we went to Superman. Waited maybe 45 minutes and the line barely moved (we got to see Batwing dispatch about twice during those 45 minutes). We ended up giving up and just went and rode Wild One instead. At least I got the one credit that mattered at that place. The last line I waited in was for season pass processing (as they were the cheapest we were going to SFGAdv the next day) and that line also took forever

    On Stealth at Thorpe park, from when the train pulled up and the gates opened until the announcer started with "Alright, let's make this a quick shoot." took a30 seconds tops. A 20 people vertical accelerator that quick is phenomenal. The Swarm also took about a minute from when the train pulled in and the restraints opened until the man said "Heads back, and brace yourself!" U.K. operations are very good and consistent, usually.

    Sometimes, it's the guests that are slow, guest with issues, guest with enquiries, guests who take their time to settle down. As for the operation aspect, each ride has different safety procedures. Some rides with multiple ride vehicles has dispatch interval time, which means you can't dispatch the next ride vehicle until the previous ride vehicle reaches the required zone so as to prevent system fault / ride vehicle collision. Where I'm working at, we are not allowed to park vehicles at the station for too long or it'll cause a system fault. Go figure.

    As a frequent goer to this park, I would like to say that the VR has been removed. The VR did take forever and it was just horrible. I never really noticed how long the dispatch times were and I don't rlly mind that its 2 minutes. The park doesn't really have a HUGE crowd and its not extremely filled to the max. The food services are usually pretty good, but sometimes they can have pretty bad service.

      @CoasterStudios  Před 7 lety +15

      The thing is that they don't need to take that much time to keep you safe. I've seen Firehawk at Kings Island, which is the same coaster as Batwing, dispatched in less than 2 minutes. These coasters were designed to be dispatched in a short amount of time. This isn't a safety thing- this is about being slow. When I was there watching them checking restraints, they had very little energy or enthusiasm and just didn't care about the time it took to send out a train.

    I work at Sixflags great America one thing you have to put into consideration is sometimes guests have question which can slow down the time of dispatch and another getting on a ride that restricts from having bags or any loose items or if a rider can't accommodate the restraints to let them out An recheck the train actually the better An more time you spend in the station is a positive thing. Just imagine every time we rushed An tried to do everything quick lots of mistakes could be made in safety is our priority.

    I work as a ride operator at one of the many Six Flags locations. I know a terribly long wait time to be put on your ride, it just depends on how crowded the park is and how well our rides are working. There’s lots of things we have to do before every single launch to ensure that everyone is and will be safe while the rides are in motion. We even arrive an hour to thirty minutes early and go down two page checklists to make sure that every single ride is operating as it should be and won’t put anyone in any kind of danger. Maintenance and Safety walk up and down the tracks and test the cars/RVs/trains (whatever the ride uses to dispatch) every morning and come in at four to five in the morning to do so depending on when the park opens. It’s a hassle to load, unload and check restraints when we have to take some guests on and off the ride while loading and then we ALL have panels we have to run back to and start pushing buttons and rushing. I’m sorry you had such long dispatch times, we’re really trying our best.

    A) people are slow
    B) people need to put their things away
    C) we’re usually in position for around 1.5-2 hours so by the first hour we’re already tired
    D) sometimes someone is too big for the seat and we have to try to push it down and if that doesn’t work we have to unlock the seats and check them again

If that safety system malfunctions and that car happens to take off, the end result could be fatal for all parties on board the car.

    Common Misconception, VR is a great idea simply because it brings in capital/revenue. There's a reason why theme parks choose to do things. It also brings new customers and pass holders. They did have select times where VR was not in use and that those who didn't want VR could ride. This helped accommodate other guests. Now has the estimated wait time gotten better, yes. Remember every season has no choice but to get better. Reviews do help yet, It just depends on the day when the person came.

    Being a ride host, seeing this annoys me so much, those ride hosts are trying to dispatch as quick as they can, tbh it takes time, guests take forever to actually sit down, then you have to check all bars while doing that you'll always get someone who will ask to release their bars to assist them with something or someone's chest size will be too big so you'll be trying to push their bar down so that the dispatch button will go, if it won't flash you can't let them on, releasing bars means you have to recheck all bars again, sometimes we'll be rechecking more than once, where I work the coaster isn't ready until the dispatch button is flashing, then you get the empty seats which are pretty heavy. during all of this you have to height check and all, I work at a them park here in the UK one of the rides I work on we aim to ride 1000 guests per hour with 2 28 seat trains, we rarely get to that target cos of all of the above but we do our best to get our guests dispatched as quickly and as safely as possible

    I have to agree with their stand up coaster time. I work at Vortex here at Carowinds. It is somewhat hard to have under a minute for a load time. Even with 4 associates on the train. It all depends on the people who are boarding and who is working that day. Not to mention that it is the most difficult ride in the park to operate.

    • @CoasterStudios
      @CoasterStudios  Před 8 lety +6

      Exactly- their time for a stand up coaster was rather impressive. It definitely varies per guests on the train. Right after that was shot, I boarded the coaster and it was at least 4 minutes until it dispatched.

      To me, the B&M standups are not easy for the operators. Take, for example, the bicycle seat that many people try to sit on. That causes them to have to get people to readjust into the correct position before they can lock the train. You also have four across, with a very narrow aisle to check the inside riders.
