- For a lot of Black Americans, the idea of tracing their roots back more than a couple of generations has often felt like a dream, as it wasn’t possible for many due to lack of documentation.
The genealogy website Ancestry.com has released the world's largest collection of records from the Freedmen's Bureau. They've made more than 3.5 million records of African American families, some going back as far as 1846, available to everyone for free.
Professional genealogist and ancestry consultant Nicka Sewell-Smith joins Shannon LaNier on “Black News Tonight” to discuss tracking down Black family histories.
All this and more on “Black News Tonight.”

Bravo @BNCNews. Our Nicka Sewell Smith's is a trailblazer in field of Genealogy and Historical research, amplifying voices of African Ancestored stories and beyond; Her invaluable Professorship has empowered my own Family History research journey tremendously. #RiteON
Nicka really broke down how the freedman bureau was supposed to work. I had no idea abandoned land was included in the work they were supposed to be included. And rations. History not readily shared.
Nicka is very thorough with her ongoing research and sharing what she knows with those of us researching our ancestors.
Congratulations Nicki and the ProGen fam!
This new information encourages me to reignite my Ancestry search and get a few more generations back! Thank you Ms. Sewell-Smith 🙌🏾
Man do reignite your search ,! Man it a deep connection to know the Ancestors !
Its very emotional 😢
Nicka is awesome. Her videos at Black Pro Gen Live have enabled me to find the slave owner for one set of my ggg grandparents. It was heartbreaking to see them listed on estate inventory along with their appraised value.
Very helpful. We're researching surnames: Grant, Manning, Mathews, and Williams in St Stephens Berkeley County, SC, USA
Just saw this video ,,,this is wonderful news .
I didn’t know you were a Sewell!! Hello Cousin!
I see u Nicka!!👍🏽 I'm looking forward to you and the others on this year's CZcams channel " Who is Nicka Smith" ❤️🌷🌷🌷
Look how far you've come!!
Great information
WARNING to black people doing genealogy !! Any Ancestors born BEFORE 1865 might have been racial misclassified on US census. Your ancestors was listed black , negro or mulatto BUT he or she was really black skin indigenous Native American. This happen to me. My ancestor are listened black, negro and mulatto on US census between 1870 -1920 but they were 100% Blackfoot Indian and Hopi Indian. ALSO! Ancestry DNA blood sample and 23 & Me DNA blood sample for indigenous Indian doesn’t represent black Native American . So these DNA test are flaw.
Agreed 💯
No, that's complete BS
Nika Smith IAM your cousin. Just found out today. How can I get in touch with you

Well as I started to trace my ancestors I realized that there are white fathers who I will never be able to link probably because they.........
You will be able to make the links. Keep pushing. Build community. Don't go at it alone.
