In my own term, tourism could be define as a phinomenom that deals with the human experience of visiting one place or the other for the purpose of leisure, home experience, business, education, travel and agro transport for a period of time. (Lemmy 2022)
This seems to be a very charming city, I hope I can visit sometime in the future. Seeing and sharing places like this is why I love traveling and make videos so much! And please keep up the great job! Subscribed!!
A few years ago, while I was studying my bachelor, one of my teachers (sociology tourism) asked this question during a lesson and we had to answer it. My answer was short, "tourism is what tourists do". When he asked me "what is a tourist?" I asked "those who practice tourism".
Another great video. I love discussing this same issue with our students. For me tourism is something we ‘do’ in our leisure time that is different to our normal routine. It shouldn’t come down to the duration or distance from home. It’s a mindset, it’s our valued leisure time and how we each chose to spend it.
Thank you so very much, Dr. Hayley. I have just recently become a fan of yours, and have watched just few of your videos. I find your perspectives very agreeable. My definition of tourism would be: Leaving home in search of something that is not a part of your regular routine, with the intention of returning home when you have found it. 'Home' in this context is (house) where you live.
There is a definition by a french author Jean Mistler which is “Le tourisme est l'industrie qui consiste à transporter des gens qui seraient mieux chez eux, dans des endroits qui seraient mieux sans eux.” I can translate it as "Tourism is the industry that consists in transporting people who would be better off at home to places that would be better off without them" A bit misanthropic but interesting nevertheless !!!
How would YOU define tourism? I am curious to know!
Tourism is a travel to a certain destination, for it to be tourism you participate in activities and spend. You must not stay more than 365 days.

I wonder if people’s opinion on distance from home will change post-pandemic after having to explore more local areas than usual?

I like that definition a lot!
Many thanks.
Thank you so much for this video! Do you know of any journals that cover the definition by any chance?
Take a look at my article on the website about it- I have listed the major definitions 👍
