It always makes me smile to see this announcement pop up in June. Jane Austen July was how Tilly lured me into booktube. Time to start planning.

  • @SpinstersLibrary

This has made me super excited to get stuck into some Austen once again. Like you, I found that Sense and Sensibility improves with every reread. Looking forward to reading it once again and discovering more details in the story.
The Paula Byrne book sounds interesting, I enjoyed the Mullan, and I'm definitely more into books about Austen's writing than biographies of her, so that sounds right up my street.
SO MANY RETELLINGS and they all sound amazing. Also The Murder of Mr Wickham is a recommendation from both you and Marissa so I might have to get that. Also taking note of those Lex Croucher books, they sound super fun. The Lister diaries are already at the top of my TBR shortlist.
I'm never going to read all of these 😭
But I'll have a lot of fun trying.

For my watching challenges, I always enjoy rewatchs of Sense and Sensibility (1995, I'm in that group haha) and of The Jane Austen Book Club.

I loved reading 'Cambrian Pictures' by Ann of Swansea. It's such an interesting alternative view of the era, by the disabled sister of Sarah Siddons. So, more of a working class view of the time. It's a mix of sense and sensibility and she has a real gift for the dramatic (women fighting duels showing the family's stage craft background).

Did I hear you say that you had never read a Georgette Heyer?!?
She has so many amazing books, romances and comedies and histories and mysteries. Some of her historical novels are Georgian and thus would not fit the remit, but many of them are Regency so you have loads to choose from. I would suggest starting with one of the following:
    The Grand Sophy
    Venetia
    Arabella
They’re fun and frothy and killingly funny at times. If you wanted a more dramatic novel that’s about domestic arrangements but is not what I would necessarily call a romance so much as a drama, then try A Civil Contract. It’s a fascinating study of a marriage based on financial necessity and comfort, which of course many marriages were, and I love it, although it is not what one usually expects from Heyer.
If you decide to stretch it to the Georgian period, my favorite of those are:
    These Old Shades
    The Masqueraders
If you like her, she’s got literally dozens of novels so you’ll have no lack of places to go from there. 🥰

I had to order it special. It comes out June 11. Some good adaptations are from Bollywood. There is one based on Sense and Sensibility.Ive been reading the Barsetshire series. I want to recommend it but I am not sure that Darkness at Pemberley by T H White (Sword in the Stone/Once and Future King) counts as a Jane Austen retelling, even if it features Mr Darcy, Pemberley and Elizabeth Darcy
I would be interested to see your reaction to the Bridgerton books, if you read them. I was bothered by historical inaccuracies in the early books and spent rather too much time refuting a scene where a couple of characters try to get a warm milky drink.

I’ve never even heard of the Watson’s so maybe I’ve give that a go. Have you read “Me and Mr Darcy” by Alexandra Potter? It’s a modern retelling but the main character is visiting Jane Austen’s home etc and “meets” the “real” Mr Darcy whenever she’s on her own away from the tour group that she’s with. (Now that I’ve put that in writing I have a strange Dejavu feeling that I probably asked the same question last year haha)

Please could you do another video with Nick this year? I love the 2 you’ve done previously! (& was sad you didn’t do one in 2023😢)

He has been reading more Jane Austen every year, but we didn't get round to making a video last year. He now only has Sense and Sensibility left, I think!

(Melanie here) What was the name of that comedy play with two gentlemen who invited ladies over with the thought that there would be an older aunt/uncle? present. That fell through so one of them dressed up as the older relative. Than sounded funny. Where would I look for it? Thanks, Katie.

Now you're talking; shame she wasn't as prolific as Dickens. I thought that the TV attempt at Sanditon was an appalling travesty and an absolute hoot: unreservedly recommended.

Maybe it's just me, but I think J.A. is the first real novelist. And all the other real novelists are standing on her shoulders because she got there first !

I definitely think of her as the first novelist to have proper character development. Characters don't seem to grow in novels pre-Austen!
