I dearly love this routine.
I have, since I saw it first-run, looong long ago, on Johnny Carson.
I can still hear Daddy and Mama, and myself, roaring with laughter at this Ace Trucking Company skit, and especially at Bill Saluga's bit.
I'm so glad I found this clip.
Especially since we recently lost 'Ray, Jay, Johnny, Sonny, Juney, RJ, RJJ, RJJJr, but ya doesn't has to call me Johnson', darling Bill Saluga.
RIP, Johnny and Bill, Daddy and Mama, and thanx so very very much, gentle souls, for the magic, music, and memories.
I'm 65 and I LOVE fond memories!! and this is one of the BEST!! LOL
And now Billy's gone (RJJ Jr). Rest In Peace. You made an entire country laugh. Michael Mislove (the son in the sketch) is now the only ATC member still with us.
R.I.P. Fred, you will be so missed. We love you dear sir.
Ray's signature bit of "Oh you don't have to call me Johnson" is as classic as the vaudevillian "Slowly I turned." 😂
"Niagara Falls!"
I went to see David Letterman's Netflix show in New York. They filmed it at the something-Johnson theater (Sorry I don't remember the exact name). When he asked the audience if we knew the significance of the person the theater is named for, I suggested he was Ray J. Johnson's brother, promptly launching into the trademark bit. Letterman flashed that gap-toothed grin and said, "You can leave now!"
A well rounded actor !! I believe he worked right up until his new home :) RIP dear Mr. Willard
God bless his soul.
He was the best straight man! Will be so missed!
What do you mean by, "Straight"?
I loved his character on, "Roseanne". He was who Leon married.
Straight means he plays it straight. He lets others be funny around him. And he makes them look funny. Has nothing to do with sexual orientation.
This bit even made it's way into one of Bob Dylan's most popular songs:
You may call me Terry, you may call me Timmy
You may call me Bobby, you may call me Zimmy
You may call me R.J., you may call me Ray
You may call me anything but no matter what you say
Still, you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes
You're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody
Slow train coming...gotta serve somebody...may be the devil or may be lord but you gotta serve somebody
Has to be one of the greatest lines of all time ...I dont know which way to turn... I think you take a right at highway five.......remember watching this with my grandfather fifty years ago.. seems like yesterday.....Bill Saluga was the man..
I love this stuff, that little guy is funny as hell. This brings back a lot of great memories from my past. When my entire family was intact and we were young, like Stevie Wonder said I wish those days would come back once more because I loved them so. You can call me Mikey, or can call Mike, or can M, ha, hahaha, hahahaha, I love it🥺
I'm with you on all you said.....
I enjoyed Fred Willard. Especially on Fernwood 2Night. I had totally forgotten about the Ace Trucking Company until I came across it while searching for something online tonight. Fun memories.
How Mull and Willard kept a straight face when Happy Kyne and the Mirth Makers took the stage was a true testament to their professionalism !!
"She didn't come here to be insulting!"
"Oh really? Where does she usually go?"
😂🤣😂🤣
RIP Ray J Johson (Bill Saluga)..Oh you dont have to call me Johnson
Bill Saluga was Raymond J. Johnson, Jr. This bit was repeated by anyone and everyone back then at parties.
He made a career out of that one joke back in the 70's.
I even remember a song called "Dancin' Johnson." I'll look for it here.
Here it is: czcams.com/video/s7knBOmHhaA/video.html
Saluga did have most of the laughs here though.
why? I love Fred Willard but this just wasn't funny
RIP Mr. Willard. You were funny in everything including A Mighty Wind. Whaaaa Haaaapened!
Greatest routine in history 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
Ol’ Fred gave us a lot of laughs...R.I.P Mr. Willard.
The Ace Trucking Company is in the top 5 comedy troupes ever! The rating system is bogus these days.
R.I.P. Bill Saluga.
"You can call me Ray, or you can call me Jay, or you can call me ...." Timeless!
Timeless? Maybe. Funny? Not at all.
Willard is 40 years old, here.
A little old-fashioned, but some funny lines!
“I don’t know where to turn…” “Make a left at highway 5.”
Still absolutely hilarious fifty years later. "Why doesn't ya jus' call me Ray?"
You can call me ray..🤠
More to Come...
Boy, that's a MIGHTY LITTLE Johnson! 😉
RIP Bill saluga-"ya doesn't have to call me johnson'
That weird bit, was part of a king of the hill episode.
Zig-Zag is that a local paper,? no man it’s nation wide.
RIP Billy
Very good B level stuff..!
Hilarious skit. I remember watching these guys back in the day, on Ed Sullivan and other shows . RIP Fred. But where was Patti Deutsch? She had the most noticeable voice.
She started doing "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In" that season. She might have left the troupe for that, or she just might not have been available.
=============== Wow, real comedy for a change. What we have in 2024 is swill, but these skits remind us of what comedy was before it became necessary to be "cutting edge" unnecessarilly dirty, etc. BTW, Carson was top notch.
Oh! Now I finally get him, he's trying to be a more dimwitted version of Groucho Marx, I was always told he made a career out of having just one joke, but really it's just that he happened to have a very long, strangely popular, catchphrase.
I thought the same! I never saw anything from him before except the famous thing, but.... This is like Groucho the 2nd.
Koth brought me here
🤣 you doesn't has to call him Johnson!! 🤣
You could teach a whole sociology class based on RayJayJohnson.
Too funny
R.I.P Raymond J Johnson Jr. . . . . .a top comedian
He's still alive, his real name is Bill Saluga
If by chance, can y'all put Roger Moore's appearance from 1974?
We'll get it posted!
@@johnnycarson Ok thank you appreciate it.
Rj reminds me of Charlie Chaplin.
Hmmm, I'm sure this skit was hilarious in its day, but it's really dated now. I love Fred Willard and am sad to see him gone but this is not really a great example of his best humour. RIP Fred.
Improv can be hard to watch and even harder to perform, knowing that they probably only discussed a basic premise and a couple set ups, this is a great example of a lot of hard work being presented to you on the fly.
I think it's hilarious!
Micheal and Bill are the only two left now.
Beat the citadel
why do i keep thinking Groucho?
johnny calling them "wild, crazy", and "flaky".
Avenatti from the past
And not a single F-Bomb... what about that?
Fuckin crazy man
RJJ 😂
Since this has a very Marx Brothers feel to it... RJ Jr. should have ended with, 'Since your husband is no longer with us... Will you marry me??? Did he leave you any $$$??? Answer the 2nd question 1st!'.
RIP Ray Jay Sonny June-y R.J R.J.J R.J.J. jr (not Johnson)😢
Oh yeah? Where does she go?
Vaudeville
Absolutely!
Dear Witch And Families Factorially....here in the factorial Camp of Laws ........looking up male law?
Tony Rosato as mom?
George Memmoli
@@bobgampert8654 thanks..I guess my timeline wasn't right anyway..Tony did some slapstick roles like that later with sctv
Anybody notice how heavy the mom is?
You know, I never understood the popularity of Bill Saluga's Ray J Johnson. I never found him all that funny; just REALLY freaking annoying.
But, as ever, Fred Willard holds these things together. Even as the effective straight man, he still brings the funny. We already miss him. RIP, Fred.
The good old days when a man in a dress was a comedy skit.
Bill is gone now
That kid is Booger from Revenge Of The Nerds and the voice of Snot on American Dad.
The son? That's Michael Mislove. Booger/Snot is Curtis Armstrong.
All of the hair looks like wigs.
Anyone here after Rick and Morty?
Bill Saluga is the only funny one in this skit.
Besides Fred's sideburns?
He was funny aside from his johnson routine. 😅😅😅
With all deference to Fred Willard, I thought that this was a pretty unfunny bit. Then 2:14 happened, and it went from merely unfunny to unwatchable. How Bill Saluga managed a career on this one bit is mystifying.
Agreed. I always hated the "you can call me Ray" bit.
Maybe you have to play it at a faster speed.
Randy Magnum lol. It wouldn’t help the material, but it would be over faster!
To quote Krusty....that bit was funny for about 5 minutes.
I think he was a tad generous.
I don’t know how Fred got involved this hot mess.
Flaky
This is the first time I ever say Ray J (Bill Saluga) do anything besides his you can call me Ray schtick
3:28
Wow that short guy was so annoying, I'm sick of him already
