    This is a great tuutorial thx heaps bud and that landing so you can discuss radios was just awesome man... I usually do landings with that same approach but like a shit load quicker which usually results in me becoming part of the runway lol... very helpful thankyou.

    Excellent tutorial on huey navigation! Thank you for making it. One comment, I believe when contacting ATC, you need to press "ralt" plus "\", on your keyboard or you will not get a response. I have this key combo mapped to my throttle. Subscribed and liked!

      TheCraigHudson Yeah! I got the Huey a few days ago and only have 5 hours on it, have been practicing getting control of the ground effect and landing quickly, now I just need to get the handling under control and as smooth as this because right now I kind of sway around still, gotta learn how she moves

    OK, I had a play with the ADF and NDB beacon signals... this is a great way of getting round the DCS map :) I landed right next to one of the outer NDB transmitter stations after homing in on it via the ADF. I must say I never noticed how well these are implemented in DCS... The antenna accurately represents a folded dipole, i.e. for HF (high frequency) strung up between two poles. A small mistake was that one of the outer NDB stations was plonked right across a railway line at Krymsk 408Khz (KW)... but I suppose we can forgive that :) I would also advise to have a morse code chart to hand, because as you stated, some of the beacons are close together on the tuning dial and you could easily lock into the wrong one. As a radio ham I know morse code so can identify the correct beacon. Here is a link for a morse code chart to print if you want to start using the code letters... its easy and a great help.
    www.apogeekits.com/PDF_Files/Morse_Code.pdf
    Most of the ID letters (printed next to the frequency) are only one or two letters... so it does not take long to learn them from the grib sheet. I did read in the Robert Mason's, 'Chickenhawk' book (every one who flys a Huey has to read) that they used a hood over the peter pilots head so that they could only see the instruments to fly by and had no external visual aids to navigate by! Can we get that good? :) OK, this is great stuff... onto learning the radio ATC stuff next :)

    • @dirtywaffleiron1
      @dirtywaffleiron1  Před 8 lety

      Thank you for your link, I am terrible with morse code so I will be adding that to my digital kneeboard!! And that explains the letters that are written in DCS after each NDB. that will be a much faster way to verify i'm tuned in on the right freq.and they still use the method of using a hood to block your vision outside of the aircraft when you are testing for your instrument flight rules qualification... but the instructor is ready to take controls if you begin to get into a bad flight regime. luckily in DCS our lives are considerably less limited haha! I definitely suggest practicing instrument only flight and landings (IFR) so when you do find yourself in the fog or low light / no lighting you are prepared. even in perfect weather we need to know our huey's airspeed and rate of decent to avoid vortex ring state which is usually the #1 challenge for huey pilots, that and avoiding mast bumping.

    • @dirtywaffleiron1
      @dirtywaffleiron1  Před 8 lety

      I just found this list of NDB's with the corresponding morse code ID's and it shows the translation for people like myself that are not very fluent with morse code. here is the default file path you can use to find it in your DCS files (for DCS 1.5) : "C:\Program Files\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World OpenBeta\Doc\DCS World List of all available Beacons EN.pdf"

    • @Jammoko
      @Jammoko Před 8 lety

      +dirtywaffleiron1 Yup... that's my main sin these days; mast bumping. Normally when I am asking too much out of the virtual physics... my IP would be bashing me round the head LOL Still, knowing you can't die in a simulator encourages liberties. Sure, I keep forgetting how daunting the morse code can be to learn. I learnt it years ago to gain my HF ham radio licence (G4***) and it took me months of doggedly listening while I got my speed up to the required 12 wpm for the test. Thanks for the beacon list... I also managed to find same online...
      vk.com/doc1084679_396017486?hash=1f2ee3ceaacf660e5d&dl=455c15aee0729730e8
      I will print this out... but from what you have said... I gather you can add it as a page to the knee pad? I presume you just drop the file in a DCS folder somewhere?
      Again, thanks for all your help... this has added a whole new dimension to flying the Huey for moi...

    • @dirtywaffleiron1
      @dirtywaffleiron1  Před 8 lety +1

      I'm looking into finding a way to add it to the in game kneeboard so it will always be there when I pull it up... no luck at the moment. for now I just have it on one of my side monitors.

    You can turn the OBS bug on the ILS indicator till the vertical line is centered to get the azimuth to the Omni Directional Beacon(in case your aircraft doesn't have the double indicator needle) then flip the switch on the radio compass from ADF to VOR like you would to slave the needles.
    Something I found odd, if you try to land on the ODB(VOR antenna) it'll burst into flames and burn up, even though it's all metal. : /

    awesome video man thanks. I just got one issue: When I start a free flight, which is probably what you did here, the ground crew option in the comms list appears black. Is it a bug or am I messing with radios? Thx mate

    • @dirtywaffleiron1
      @dirtywaffleiron1  Před 8 lety

      I've seen that before. either you don't have the correct radio selected to broadcast on, or the is an issue with the game tower. if.you have easy communication on in options it doesn't matter.

  • @meshak8107
    @meshak8107 Před 7 lety

    Hi. Subscribed. Great video. I'm a little confused about one explanation. Setting switch to 1, you stated it's VHF FM. Number 3 is VHF AM. Why use UHF over VHF FM or AM? Is #1 reserved for tower and not ATC? I'm just trying to sort this out in my mind. Thanks

    • @dirtywaffleiron1
      @dirtywaffleiron1  Před 7 lety

      yes i get those confused all the time look at 19.26 mins in,... that knob selects what radio you "transmit" on, so 1 = FM, 2= UHF, 3= VHF AM. you can listen to all three radios but wherever that knob is set is what you will "transmit" on. so to talk to tower you would need to set the VHF AM to the correct tower freq. and set the "intercom mode" to #3... if tower was a UHF freq. then you would set the UHF to tower freq and "intercom mode" to #2.

  • @SpaceForceRecon
    @SpaceForceRecon Před 7 lety +1

    When conducting an ILS approach, shouldn't you also turn your OBS knob to the inbound course indicated on the approach plate?

    • @dirtywaffleiron1
      @dirtywaffleiron1  Před 7 lety

      Bret Fugate negative sir. The OBS knob only selects what radial you want to track when flying a VOR nav-com. OBS = Omni Bearing Selector and VOR = VHF Omnidirectional Beacon.

    • @SpaceForceRecon
      @SpaceForceRecon Před 7 lety

      dirtywaffleiron1 oh ok. I thought it had to match the localizer course. Awesome video! I'm trying to learn UH-1 Nav/Radios. The TERPS here look a little different than the approach plates I'm used to.

    • @dirtywaffleiron1
      @dirtywaffleiron1  Před 7 lety

      Yea the OBS knob wont effect anything when coms are on an ILS frequency.

  • @victorleonard7087
    @victorleonard7087 Před 8 lety

    You must have the download version of DCS Huey and i have the disc version. My kneeboard has several pages on Luchini but only shows ILS and ATC frequencies. It does not show VOR, FM, AM or NDB frequencies. Even after updating to latest version, this page does not show up on the kneeboard. You also have NDB's on your F10 map and mine doesn't. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Hello Dirtywaffleiron1!
    I appriciate your tutorial, very well done and very helpful! However I am having issues with the ILS not responding to me putting in a ILS number. Ive followed your steps from turning the actual navunit on to inputting the correct numbers but the arrows are not reacting at all (they just stay as a cross). Maybe you could help me shine some light on what I may be missing?
    Anyhow, appriciate the guide o7

    • @dirtywaffleiron1
      @dirtywaffleiron1  Před 6 lety

      if you have the correct freq. for the intended runway set and the COM/NAV turned on (right clicked on knob once) there is either a bug in the sim or maybe you are too far from the runway to reciece the ILS transmitter / not in line of sight of the runway.

    • @NoFear1979
      @NoFear1979 Před 6 lety

      dirtywaffleiron1 ty for responding. Ive tried it some more but cant yet tell if it may be bugged. I know that it has worked sometimes, others not. What i did note thou is that if you turn the right knob on the FM comm panel to "home" the tracker on the front dashboard does nothin at all.

    • @NoFear1979
      @NoFear1979 Před 6 lety

  • @RobertGeez
    @RobertGeez Před 6 lety

    VOR seems much more accurate and ADF is a bit dodgy in that you may not be on the exact freq.

    • @LtRiot
      @LtRiot Před 6 lety +1

      That's the entire point. This stuff was figured out in the 1920s and still used today, so obviously the system works. The adf is purposely not accurate and has a morse code for a reason. It's just to get you in the ball park. If you are worried about which adf you are on, look at your kneeboard. They drew a little beepidy boop picture for you like this: -- -- . . -- Is the beeping in your ear the same as what it says on the airport's plate? then you have the rght adf. Is it different? then u are on the wrong freq
