I like both versions. The second version although simpler is more chilling and captivating, the first version is more sophisticated and gentle.

I love how this feat with Winter in general: it's like the music was made for fight against the snow and cold. The strange feeling you have when you walk in the snow and try to go when you want.

Same, one of a few -- I meant to watch The Thing and The Shining again last winter (it's been years), at least I did revisit this one.

That’s pretty fitting because most people North Dakota are Norwegian descendants.

Indeed. Strangely, in spite of the title, most of the film is set in Brainerd, Minnesota, but that state is quite Norwegian as well of course. It's a funny film to watch from the perspective of a Norwegian, with the accents and names and everything. Even the movie poster is done in a sort of Nordic embroidery style.

@@Vingul Yeah Minnesota is very Nordic, I've been to a few Norwegian festivals over in Minnesota. Over here in Wisconsin its mostly German and Polish heritage but there is still a good amount of Nordic influence also. Also there is a Norwegian Museum over in Moorhead, MN which is connected to Fargo, ND. I think it has a stave church and a longship there with other cool stuff, I know on Washington Island, WI there is a Stave church everyone visits also. The Midwest is great to see all of the northern European culture that was brought over to the states.

I believe the melody comes from an Old Norwegian fidfle tune called the Lost Sheep.
I also think the original version featured the traditional Norwegian hardanger fiddle.
Beautiful, soulful, and perfect for the bleak winter setting.
