Etabs 2015 - Torsional Irregularity check with seismic loads

  • Etabs 2015 advanced tutorial deals with the torsional irregularity check with seismic loads in high rise building.This is one of the most essential checks to be considered in high rise building design.Following are discussed in the tutorial.
    (1) Drift 1:44
    (2) Story Drift 7:07
    (3) Torsional Irregularity 10:47
    The initial part oft the tutorial explains on how to find the maximum drift occuring to a building when it gets subjected to earthquake loads in both direction and the check to make sure that the drift is within limits.
    The second part of the tutorial illustrates on how etabs software calculates the story drift of a building.
    The final part deals with the torsional irregularity check and explains how to find the whether the building is safe from this horizontal irregularity from the drift values obtained.

    thanx...i have seen that many building are in odd shapes and they come under torsional irregularities in mode 1 and. mode2 ...mode1 sometime easy to remove but not mode2...any solution how to remove torsion in both modes

    While assigning columns, u had assigned all at its CG ..! Actually it's not like that na..if columns will be flushed at any of face then it shall not be at CG location, while assigning..as it will give different results in modal mass participation..due to change in CG & CR. I guess shall be location with offset command. Pls comment

    Please awnser my folowing question.. is the first floors make the building none symitric so that in case of drift in direction of Xaxis there is a displacement in direction of Y also and vice versa .. or what makes a displacement in other axis??!!

      +Ali Karout building is just like column with a free end...so the displacement will b high at free end

      abhi shelke increase the size of your column or provide shear wall until your drift max is less than 1.2 or code provision..

    Sir, If we want to consider accidental torsion which is calculated according to FEMA provisions. Is it automatically applied in ETABS by considering the 5% eccentricity while defining the seismic load pattern or do we have to calculate it manually and applied it to each floor of the model as moment?

      step 1: make sure while analyzing, "calculate center of rigidity " option is checked
      step 2: after analysis, go to display>show tables>analysis>structure results>center of mass and rigidity and then click ok.
