Discussing the amazing high spec'd Nikon F5 SLR film camera. Video includes Nikon F5 portraits / landscape photos, Nikon F5 film loading and reasons to consider this camera compared to other vintage film cameras. The Nikon F5 film camera works great as a studio camera for me but it is nice to get it outside too with longer lenses. The Nikon f5 weight isn't for everyone but the Nikon F5 price probably is!

One of the best purchases I ever made was a new F5. I was shooting a lot of events with the N90 and when I got the F5 it totally changed my photography. It enabled me to start shooting fashion (by far the toughest shooting I ever did). Once I started shooting digital I continued to use it for all my film photography, and I'm still shooting it 23 years later. The quality and ruggedness of the F5 is truly amazing. One of the greatest AF SLR bodies ever made. Cheers for the great review.

The Best Camera Nikon ever made in my opinion, it outgunned everything out there when it was 1st introduced, and still to this day no-one ever needs more additional features,as many people that are still occasional user's of the F5 are still grappling with it's enormous potential even after more than near 3 decades.🙂

Refreshing to see the review of this undeservedly hated camera by an actual photographer. You took amazing pictures, Matt! Keep going! By the way, your humor is enjoyable, thanks for the laughter. ;)
A couple of observations by sports photographer. I grew tired of the endless "shoot-edit-shoot-edit" loop as it is physically hard to run and gun with the setup (300 mm f/2.8, 105 mm f/1.4, 20 mm f/1.8, 28 mm f/1.4, 75-150 mm f/3.5, 28-70 mm f/3.5-4.5 and a 400 mm f/5.6 in the same backpack sans the camera body - it's an exercise in itself) and mentally exhausting. So I went back to where it all has started - to the film for most of my personal work. Love the feeling of not needing to deliver photos to the client like RIGHT NOW!!!
Unlike most, I prefer big chunky bodies - they just balance better and feel nicer. Can't help it. Being the weirdo geek and having extreme case of GAS, I collect top-of-the-line bodies of yesteryears while keeping Nikon as the main working system for paid work. I got two Canon EOS 1 cameras, one Canon EOS 1n with grip, more basic EOS 650, EOS 750 and EF-M (1991), three Rolleiflex SL35s, one Rolleiflex SL35M, Nikon F5, F6 and yesterday got my hands on amazing F2AS with two lenses. F5 rises above all.
Build quality is unbelievable. It feels so dense, so "fit", so sturdy, so precise, it fits in the hand just right - its thickness is less than F6 and the size of its integrated battery grip is spot-on. F6 with MB-40 makes the setup taller and heavier, but the attachment has slight play. Canon EOS 1 with its polycarbonate shell on the metal chassis feels merely pedestrian and actually is less reliable. Feels like a tool. Just a simple tool. Well, not that "simple", but you get the meaning.
F5 is fast. Couple it with any of the D-type lenses and AF feels like the motor is ready to tear apart innards contaning the lens barrel. AF operation is faster than the F6, which is no different to any of the modern DSLRs in that regard. Accuracy is something much to be desired, but that is coming from a dude, spoiled by modern DSLR performance - these days you don't need the speed F5 provides anymore, so you can take your time to check and double-check if focus is spot-on, thanks to big and clear viewfinder. Menu system is cryptic - you have to have the sheet with menu codes printed, but once you've find your preferrable settings, you don't go back.
One of the biggest feature F5 has (and F6 too) is shutter mechanism enclosed in separate shell. Thanks to this, mirror slap is non-existent and coupled with all the sheer mass of the F5, you can shoot handheld at ridiculously slow speeds. Now, onto "the weight" argument. F5 with its integrated grip weighs just a tad bit more than gripless F4 and everyone loves the F4. How the weight of the F4 is "acceptable" and F5 is "way too heavy"? I guess, it's the perception that is at fault - not the physical parameter itself. There are heavier cameras on the market today - Canon EOS 1Dx, for example.
The biggest gripe I have with both the F5 and F6 is that they can't drive the aperture of E-type lenses. I'd love to shoot portraits with beloved AF-S Nikkor 105 mm f/1.4E on Portra 400, but the camera can't stop down the aperture and no firmware update can redeem that, unfortunately. But rejoice! If one's so depserate to shoot E-lenses stopped down on film, there's the workaround. It's quirky, but it works. Carry Nikon D750, D810, D850 with you - any modern body capable of driving electronic aperture will do the job just fine. While on digital body, stop down the lens to deserved setting: f/5.6, for example. Press DOF preview button (PV button) and while holding PV button, detach the lens from the body by releasing the bayonet lock. The aperture will stick at the setting you chose, so now you can couple the lens with your film body - be it F5 or F6. ???? PROFIT! Now you're stuck with stopped-down metering, but it's the only imaginable way of using these modern lenses on film cameras. I love high contrast and clarity of modern lens designs, so to me the newer - the better. Film cameras OTOH have stopped evolving in early 2000s.
All in all, the F5 is a marvel of Japanese engineering. Don't forget the circumstances under which Tetsuro Goto led the development of this amazing camera. The crisis, that's started in Japan in 1991, has put lot of Japanese compaines on life support. It wasn't that easy to throw money at new fancy tech while setting the standards that didn't exist yet at that time, while also having neighbouring Canon marketing juggernaut churning win after win after win on the market in the 90s. People overlook the impact 1991 crisis had on Japanese economy and trash the F5 for ridiculous reasons. It's an amazing camera that can be had for peanuts today. I've scored my F5 NEW for $250 with Kodak Portra thrown in the bag as a bonus. Not bad, huh?

Rounded up all the test lenses vest, water and put the camera in the car and drove to a nearby park. Put on the vest, grabbed the bag and when I looked at the camera, had the d850 by mistake because they look so much alike. Went home got the F5, shot and was leaving later than planned and met a lady who was leaving and now we are dating. Similarly, I love the Canon 1-N HS, but the 1-V has been pushed to "collector's item" which is a terrible shame. No need to sacrifice a roll You should have installed a lens cap close the rear dioptic window. Set camera to 1/4000 or faster lens stopped down to 22 pop away. Use a film lead puller to retract leader or set F5 to leader out mode. And you have saved that roll. Remember this if next time you have the urge to waste a roll

Also, you can use Nikon F3 screens which are significantly brighter, and with a few minutes and some screwdrivers, you can swap an F5 screen for the F3 screen (just not the stock screen, any of the others) ALSO, I had the Meta35 which allows you to download the shooting data that is saved in the camera, and you can imbed the data in with the scans. Great video, Matt.
The F5 is one of the best electronic SLRs ever made. I got my first two F5s as digital bodies back in 2008, the Kodak DCS720X and DCS760C. These were my first digital SLRs after having used my Nikon F2 Photomic with a 50mm lens since 1998. Today I rarely use any auto focus lenses on my Nikon bodies, although I have a D4 which would be perfectly capable. I like the Nikon system for its great zoom lenses and stellar 85mm and 135mm primes. For travelling it could be a bit heavy but a zoom lens justifies the heavier setup in versatility. Mostly a Leica M setup with four lenses is still easier to carry around all day.

Yes! "Modern" SLR:s are great really great. I found an almost mint Nikon F100 for £120 two months ago and It is now my go to modern film camera, but I also use a Canon EOS 3 with my L-glass. I used to shoot a lot of medium format, but I find myself most of the times choosing a 35mm camera instead, because the prints I get from my Leitz Focomat v35 are so nice that I don't need the extra resolution.

Never held a Nikon F5, and normally, I LOVE large, heavy cameras. As someone who has more bodies than time to shoot them, I was always put off by reading that the F5 chews through batteries and that the active focus point doesn't light up. Which seems odd.
HUGE fan of the (elegant simplicity of the direct input buttons and dials of the) Nikon F4s, the F90x (with the grip), and Nikon's D-series bodies.
If I "had" to pick a favorite Nikon body......................I'm stuck between the F3 and the D3s.

Difficulty of use, hard to use with my vision, etc..... means I too started to use them less and less. They stopped being fun. So......I recently sold my Leica 111a and a Mamiya TLR and bought a Nikon F5. I kept my Fuji GW690 and GSW690 but for fun walk around stuff the F5 does the trick. Interesting F5 fact: Its microprocessor controlled shutter checks speed of every activation, and will automatically adjust for any error within the factory given tolerances. I just found this one going through your back catalog, and it's perfect timing as I've just been thinking about this. I recently stopped chasing the "modern and fastest" digital camera after being a Sony shooter since the A100 and going to mirrorless, adapting lenses, yada yada, and finally found a home with the M240. I don't care about video and even though the M240 can do it, I would hazard to say it's never been on. The M240 has not slowed me down, but has stopped me from shooting gobs of digital and not caring or considering the image or fiddling with knobs and lenses. Now I just shoot (95%) the 35mm Summarit and find the Rangefinder perfect for quick composition and focus...and with the Summarit-M, DOF is really less of a concern. And 1/4000th is just enough.
I thought the great counter-part on film would be the Leica R series. It still has the Leica glass look I like, and since it's film, I REALLY want to make sure the frame is exactly the way I want it. DOF preview, predictable coverage in the viewfinder and just enough control and proper metering to get what I want. It has 1/4000th as well. But I found I didn't shoot it much, nor did any of my Rangefinders (no Leica's at the moment) satisfy what I need in a 35mm film camera. Then I brought out one of the first film camera's I bought when I got back into shooting film, dang, almost 13 years ago now, the Minolta Maxxum 7. And you touched on a lot of this in your video, but film is precious and I REALLY want to make sure I get exactly what I want when I shoot film. The Maxxum 7 is an amazing tool for a photographer who knows mostly what they are doing. Focus lock, AE Lock, a visual honeycomb preview of your metering, film swapping with memory rewind, leader out, on and on. One would think it was over-complicated, but in an age where digital makes it easy to "best guess" a lot of the time, the Maxxum 7 assures me my film will be exposed the way I intended and it weighs less than my R5!. I also think that Minolta glass is pretty darn good and had a lot of A-mount glass already. Is my 35mm Minolta glass as good as the Summarit? No, but that's okay.
I often hear of people getting into film to "slow down", or "simplify" and go out and get a fully manual camera and most times, just guess at exposure, or miss focus, or miss the shot. I don't think that's what people actually really want, and I sometimes feel they fall into the "if you don't shoot manual then you aren't a real photographer" crap-trap. I do think there is some romanticism in simplicity, and think each of us is actually looking for that in a camera. What's the minimum criteria for creation of vision? I've been through DOZEN's of camera's and formats trying to find that. And I'm not done, but I'm a heck of a lot closer than I was 13 years ago. ;)
Great video's as always, and I know you are a Nikon guy, but the Maxxum 7 is probably the best modern SLR I've ever used. If you ever get a chance to shoot one, I'd highly recommend it.

But it was exactly the same as shooting a DSLR, huge but with a much worse AF even with 41 AF points. I was not happy with it. Every time I shoot with my Leica M cameras, it gives me a completely different feeling, and I can put all my Leica stuff in a small bag. And I got much less out of focus pictures with a rangefinder and MF. That's why I sold my EOS 3. Dear Matt, thanks for your defence of the F5, I must admit I skipped this camera for one obvious reason: the F4S...and I will explain why. Early in the 90s was using Nikon F2 and F3P to take concert pictures and decided to add a second hand Nikon F4S to my Nikon pack...big mistake ( lack of judgement when GAS syndrome strikes you ) as this camera was too big and heavy and was overwhelming with too many features I did not need in the end :-) (I sold it quite quickly afterwards) For me the F2 and F3P were just enough and I still have them. When the F5 came out...I was not at all interested due to that previous bad experience and it looked like the same big beast with even more steroids, bells and whistles. I then looked at what Canon was doing and bought a used EOS-1N....quite lighter camera (this optional booster grip was a much clever idea than having a bulky monster "the Nikon way") For some reason (or adaptation ? ) Nikon went that way too with the F100 and F6 that are lighter cameras with that booster option also provided ...that makes them way more interesting than the bulky F4 and F5

I got lucky and bought one in 2014 for £160 near mint ! Spare battery trays are rare as rocking horse poo though. Glad I had the foresight to buy one back then.
