It’s so insanely backwards that gold and diamond gear is all fully renewable in Minecraft, but sand is finite.
Technically sand is infinite because of end portal, unless they fixed that
I see what you did there 😂

Sand can be traded from Wandering Traders.

I still get excited finding diamonds. yeah, they aren't as good as they used to be, but they still have value, and the contrast when used with a netherite armor and a trim is so nice in my opinion

Yeah honestly, I think this is the downside of opinions from people who spend a long time in Minecraft and are experts in the game.
As fun of an update as village and pillage was, it has a number of terrible legacies.
Diamond equipment should’ve never been something you could trade for. At the very best, you should be able to pay a villager to repair a preexisting piece of diamond equipment for a high emerald price. Certainly not be able to cheaply and repeatedly buy diamond gear, much less preenchanted diamond gear. This is just something that has to be completely removed in order to make diamonds regain their value.
Librarian trading for enchantments, at least as currently implemented, also significant diminished the enchanting table. The villager trading rebalance is making some head way in fixing it by making librarian trades biome specific, but that experiment still needs a lot of work.
Trading for mending is a problem, but it would not be as big of a problem as it is now if it were not for the anvils too expensive limit. That limit is perhaps one of Minecraft’s worst features, and makes it so that you have to rely on mending to keep the god pickaxe you painstakingly enchanted alive so you don’t have to recraft it every so often to all the time if you mine a lot.
The enchanting table should not be the worst block for enchanting. It’s literally its only function and is outclassed by both villagers and the anvil. A lot of things need to change. Here’s what I would do.
Significantly rebalance villager trading, they are already working on this in the experiment but that still needs a lot of work.
Remove the “too expensive” cap on the anvil. Also make it so enchantments can no longer be combined on the anvil. The anvil is now only used for infinitely repairing tools with resources and naming items. Also, using the anvil no longer costs xp and the anvil no longer breaks.
In addition to all of this, I would make it so mending is only renewable through trading with a civilization that exists in the end, similar to how soul speed is only renewable through piglin trades. Though mending could also be found in difficult structures throughout the world, in particular the ancient city.
The enchantment table will now be able to combine enchantments at the cost of xp and lapis, in addition to offering enchantments in an RNG dependent manner for experience and lapis like it does now.
Another major change I would make is that each enchanting table in the world will randomly offer the player a different enchantment, and all the worlds enchantment tables will be reset after one is used. This will reward the player for crafting multiple enchantment tables as they will now be more likely to find enchantments they are looking for.
We may also reward the player for crafting multiple enchantment tables by offering unique bonuses if the player places them all together in a unique pattern. This could be implemented by having the enchanting table have a connecting texture.
The enchanting levels could also use a revisit but I don’t have an idea for that right now.
Also, there are currently too many structures in the game that have diamonds and especially diamond gear in the loot table. That has to be significantly cut back on and diamonds should be reserved for the most challenging of dungeons. This ties into another one of Minecraft’s major problems, which is not having enough loot items for structures that are both balanced and rewarding.
I think the enchantment table itself should also have exclusives and I think mending would actually be perfect for it, rather than through villagers. I think it should stay in the Ancient City because of the warden but to be honest, I think there should also be some other exclusive armor types that can be combined with diamond armor to make it more valuable, but not in the form of netherite. Diamonds should also just get more uses in general, and one thing that surprises me is that we don't have iron arrows which should deal more damage than flint arrows in my opinion, but in doing that there should also be diamond arrows. And because of the lore around diamonds, I think it would be interesting to have the arrow heads break off the rest of the arrow after they're shot for diamond arrows because of how durable the diamonds are, so you get a new item and this arrow head can be reparied/refletched in the fletching table which can finally give it a use. I think it would also be interesting to add a durability feature for arrows, specifically diamond arrows, so that way you can repair the arrow head itself if you so wished. I think it would be completely illogical to spend an entire diamond to repair one to four arrow heads, so I think we should add a new block or tool into the game that can break down ores into smaller bits, so not exclusive to diamonds and not being able to craft it in the crafting table, which can open the door for more items down the road. I think it would also solve some issues with golden and iron nuggets if it's also implemented into this same concept. But because diamonds are the ore that is being cut mainly, it should also have diamonds used in the crafting recipe. Regardless, diamonds just need to have more things they can be crafted into to add value for them. If we make them more common, make them just as or even more useful than iron. Better yet, allow us to make diamond hoppers or other redstone items out of diamonds instead of iron and make both have different exclusive properties to balance things out. For hoppers, an idea could be having diamond hoppers sort and stack unstackable items for mob farms, in which these diamond hoppers can be then used directly with the crafter to even a decrafter to break down the items but only allow them for this purpose. So you would still need iron hoppers for other farms, but it adds in a new feature for diamonds and keeps the balance.
I’m pretty sure the reason they made the change is not to nerf villagers because they’re so op. But to “encourage exploration”. Which is literally the one thing they’ve been focussing on for a long time by adding frog lights, armour trims, new wolf variants and so on.
Whats also a theory, is that the worls doesnt change, YOU change. Practically all main features of gaining diamond stuff we’re always in the game. But when you were little you didnt have access to those so diamond were so rare for you and finding them was so cool. “But gary even when i have been playing minecraft when i was a bit more expierenced it was still cool for me!1!1!” Well, the more you play the game, the more risks you will take knowing you mastered certain skill. So if you are new/decently advanced you wouldnt go to end city’s use villagers and mine in giant caves, but the more you learn, the easier they get.
Thanks for listening to my mini-solo podcast.
I agree, I nearly always play creative and I consider myself a professional in that sense but when I play survival I feel a little bit like a noob. I still get excited when I see diamonds, so I can't relate to the points toycat makes in this video.
Ok Gary
To be fair they did change diamond spawn rates by making them way more common and gave villagers the mechanic of selling diamond armor
But they like actually made diamonds spawn more in caves and chests
Ye i didnt rlly think of this but the average player now (even if they rarely play the game) is wayy better than the average player like 10 years ago bc many players (even more casual ones) can concievably have 100s of hours
but netherite upgrade kinda needs diamonds, unless you want to travel a very long way to find the smiting templates and want to make all your armor look weird you'll probably clone some templates
Yeah, the templates were a game-changer for diamond. They didn't really get enough credit in the vid.
Realistically, you need 7 diamonds for every piece of armor or tool decorated with trim or upgraded to netherite. So even if you get all your armor and tools from villagers, you'll need somewhere between 56 and 84 diamonds every time you need to make a new set of kit. Granted, unless you really suck at the game, that won't be too often.
I’m really loving the quality of the latest videos. These rooms you walk through are so well done! Way to go Toycat and crew
I am shocked the proposed villager trading overhaul wasn't mentioned at all in this video, as it would increase the value of diamonds - and hone in specific desired enchantments as well.
It’s a pretty terrible half measure to be honest, it still makes Diamond gear renewable, which is a huge problem. And it wouldn’t make trading any more fun. The trading system needs to be gutted entirely and redesigned from scratch. Even the interface is a dreadfully dull experience.
@@Nephelangelo I don't disagree, but I would argue it is an improvement over the current trading.
Regardless of the analysis of trading itself for better or worse, this could have been a good topic to bring up for this video.
Unfortunately this half measure trading change will mean we will not see a real fix for about another decade.@@Giraffasaur
0:24 Netherite Upgrade? You literally need diamond armor to make netherite, and diamonds to duplicate the template.
Side note, Netherite Templates, and even the Armor Trim, need to be renamed to Runes. At least that suggests some kind of magical function at work. Template just sounds like a dull blueprint, written on a rock for some reason? Why not paper? It makes no sense.
@@Nephelangelo Honestly Trails and Tales was a missed opportunity for a desert update, called Runes & Dunes
Lol no. Some of us still make our first set of diamond armor and tools the legit way before ever touching the trades or the loot chests so they shouldn't change the increase of diamond spawns. Just add more recipes that take diamond.... Like the trims
I think the problem is the use for diamonds isn’t there. The game is easy enough to skate through with just iron; so unless you like the upgrade grind; diamonds already hold little to no value. Maybe if they overhauled the village system to allow us to make rooms and accommodations so villagers would move in; then it would feel less like we’re stealing villagers. Same thing with building and transportation; there’s very little reason to do those things. Minecraft is a sandbox but eventually we get tired of the limitations of sand. If Toycat reads this; I urge you to look at why people get mods, especially create. It allows us to specialize in the things we enjoy. Create mods give me the means and inspiration to build more. Mods that add additional challenge and purpose are fun. Why do I make a large farm if hunger isn’t a concern. Why build walls if there’s no opposition. Why build a story when most things are easily acquired. There’s even create mods that are working on adding airships, boats, and landships to the game. It makes the game world alive when your friend arrives in a vehicle carrying food for you and your villagers because you have to prepare for a siege. Or when your friend found a spot for a foundry and is producing high quality equipment; meanwhile you’re investing in magic, producing some of the best enchantments. And now you have a reason to establish a trade route.
Bro really just said netherite upgrade doesnt need any diamonds💀
@2:20 ive made dozens of enchanting tables...theyre of one my favorite decorative blocks for builds. Well, enchanting rooms are one my favorites decorations. Any medium to large build i do has at least one enchanting room. Even one or two of my smaller builds does.
The problem is that Village and Pillage and Caves & Cliffs ruined diamonds
V&P: Enabled villagers to give enchanted diamond armor with not much cost (Seriously who thought this was a good idea?)
C&C: Made diamonds extremely easy to find (I found 33 ores in my hardcore world in a single cave without any mining...)
Hopefully they eventually make them rare and give them more unique functions that aren't purely for vanity
Nah I’m a long term player and I literally never do this. It’s much easier to fish for a bit and fully enchant a diamond pickaxed you craft than to buy a efficiency 1 diamond pick for 48 emeralds
@@Deadlyvoltage3 With respect, if everyone played like this then diamonds wouldn't have a perceived loss in value. But because there are lazier ways to obtain diamond tools and armor, their value has inherently decreased regardless of how you, I, OP, or anyone else plays.
Wdym extremely easy? Diamonds are harder for me to get now! Especially with all those mobs in the huge caves killing me, I rarely get diamonds in my playthroughs until a long time later
Precious materials like diamond and gold should be strictly finite, otherwise they cease to be precious materials. The fact that gold and diamond gear is all fully renewable, while sand remains a basically finite resource after 15 years, shows just how backwards Minecraft’s design really is sometimes.
@@Nephelangelo Diamonds themselves, and diamond blocks, have remained finite despite the villager industrial complex flooding the market with various diamond wares. The vaults in 1.21 will make them renewable by technicality but not in a meaningful practical way (similar but worse than getting sand from wandering traders, I suppose)
1.17 added raw gold and blocks of raw gold, which are non-renewable. So I suppose if some crazed lunatic with 129 accounts or accomplices tries to crash the diamond-based economy with vault-powered inflation, there's some backup currency options. Raw copper, raw iron and raw gold for metal-backed, or signed books for fiat.
But yeah, kinda crazy that a gold ingot is basically worthless.
I think more people use villagers for diamond* armour and tools than actual diamonds for crafting.
*Edit: misspelled diamond lol
How is diamond ore a better flex than a diamond block?? I completely disagree, it looks way less cool and it represents having way less diamonds than a full block of it.

Knockback resistance may not be the most OP thing but having more protection against being knocked off somewhere really high or into a pool of lava is nice. Most cases you are prepared for that but having that added level of resistance is nice. Secondly if I recall villager rebalancing is requiring you to have diamonds to trade for the equipment depending on the equipment.
Iron has got to be better than diamonds it is in the most crafting recipes and you need it to mine diamonds.
Netherite upgrade does require diamonds now. Assuming you only have 1 or 2 templates, you need 7 diamons for each additional upgrade
Imagine if you needed a mace for netherite since there’s a hammer on the smithing table.
Hmmm 🤔
Diamonds seem to have a higher spawn rate now with the introduction of deepslate blocks, the deep dark and ancient citys, and if youre a boss you can have villagers with their respective jobs to get enchanted diamond armor and tools through villager trading, so mining for diamonds isnt really necessary anymore
The heart of the sea was a bad example, like, you won't need more than two beacons at a time...
2:41 i didn’t even know they existed until today
All precious materials cease to be precious when they are too abundant. And their value disappears almost entirely when they are renewable. And diamond gear is all fully renewable, plus diamond ore is way too abundant to begin with. In a world that made sense, diamond would be both rare and a totally finite resource.
We were kids back then , things have changed now we have machured, well that my opion at least
That could be a factor but they did increase diamond spawns in caves and villagers sell diamond armor

How does netherite gear not require diamonds when it takes 7 to make a netherite template?

As someone who hasn't beat the game yet, I'm always excited for diamonds!
Diamonds are still valuable and are more valuable since 1.20, because you can now duplicate the Netherite smithing templates & the armour trims.
Even if after you get netherite tools & armour you can still make Juke Boxes, Enchantment Table, Firework star, & Diamond Blocks (those are handy for bullying a pyramid for beacons)
They are ever more valuable, if you want to do armor trim and making copies of templates
Just find multiple of that trim, not like they’re that rare anyway tbh
Armour trim are nice to look at but in reality they don't serve a purpose so it a cosmetic thing and in most cases people will do that only like once.

I don't even make diamond armor, I only get diamonds for the enchantment table. Everything else I have is iron, and I just enchant them. At least in survival (which I ALWAYS play on) i'm sure for PVP you'd get diamonds to upgrader to netherite...but in terms of survival, not needed imo.
I have not used netherite due to the fact that I play with one small island and I restrict myself from using it and slow my progress substantially for my own entertainment

with the new armor trim thingy diamonds is kinda useful again, but.. the crafting recepie do not make any sense - you just smack a bunch of gems in the shape of the cauldron with a old template and material inside to get two of them. how does it work? do i grind the material with the diamonds to carve the template? do i magically press it together like a diamond block, so it is make indentations in the material in the process?

I disagree with the enchanted golden apple. Their true value to me is purely in their rarity and for the all foods challenge. Once I found my second one, which I never look for, I just play the normal game and inevitably come across them, any next one is just not exciting at all. I have one in my Wall of Frame and one that I ate for the challenge. Any others I keep, sure, but they do not excite me. I get your point that diamonds have become devaluated, but I disagree that enchanted golden apples are still more exciting than diamonds, they are not to me. I recently entered an SMP where keep inventory is off (I always play with it on) and I set my mind to getting at least four fully enchanted extra sets of armour and tools. So I need a lot of diamonds. Which is not at all hard nowadays with the new diamond probabilities.

I honestly don't have an issue with this either, tbh. It's this precise reason why I think diamonds should enter the redstone game to increase their value. Make certain items like hoppers have an iron and diamond variant, and the diamond ones can be used exclusively with the crafter to transport items in and out of it, which I think would seriously increase its value. I also think we should add a decrafter so we can break down items back into the recipe that made them, and I also think that the diamond hopper should be able to make unstackable items stackable by cycling them through the hoppers, and to balance it out, if you split, place, use, or whatever else a stacked unstackable item, it becomes unstackable again and must be thrown back into the diamond hopper. This would be so freaking useful for diamonds and increase value, and having the crafter and decrafter made with diamonds should also happen.
I don't think diamonds should be as rare as they once was. The 'content' to Minecraft is building and exploring. Now with the new world size to build in and all the mobs you might encounter, I think people will have more fun if they had greater access to diamond tools
Increasing accessibility to what's supposed to be and has every reason to be a rare resource is a bad idea, the entire game shouldn't be dumbed down on behalf of that especially since you can already outclass literally everything with a trading hall and an iron farm
@@EmperorPenguin1217 I do think there's another solution to this problem, rather than leaving it as is, such as tweaking villager trades to reduce enchanted gear or diamond loot, and making these said loot to be found exclusively as a post game content. However, the player base are filled with casuals, and only if they knew how to build "necessary" and "exploitable" farms and halls, and not to mention the additional problems this solution may bring...

I will never understand the minecraft comunity and the desire to make everything harder to get :/ I'm personally never in a spot where i can say that i have too many diamonds
I mean yeah they’re not but netherite is the new rare thing. A netherite Ingot is worth like 2 diamond blocks tbh
I have to respectfully disagree with you. I don't think diamonds were ever that valuable. Full iron is plenty for fighting mobs, you can make obsidian and by extension a nether portal with buckets, and every ore can be mined with iron picks. Iron has far more value and practical uses than diamond ever did. Also, the go to weapon for every boss is made from some sticks and string. I would have to say that the only real value that diamond gear has ever had was pvp. Unless you count showing off to friends, that's fair.
Me personally, I prefer zenytes and onyx.
I think a way to balance netherite and diamonds is to make netherite weapons to have a longer cooldown and they could add enchantments to the game that decrease tool cooldown
Well that just defeats the point
The thing is, you don't need to balance netherite and diamond. Netherite is LITERALLY an upgrade of diamond gear (you need diamond armor and tools to get netherite armor and tools).
Diamonds will always be valuable lol.
True but its lost is value to the point that iron unirocally has more value than diamonds due to how many more uses it has
What I'm tryna say here is while yes cooked steak is valuable its obviously not gonna be as valuable as netherite
This is a problem
But I like diamonds
