    Any good pianist can learn to improvise with practice but this is next level because what she does is so structured, as if she knows how it ends before it begins. This is the type of spontaneous creation that was a defining feature of some of the greatest composers in history. The only difference is she isn't writing it down as much, but even then I'm so glad we have her recordings!

    I saw her live at harvard in a lecture/concert 2 months before the pandemic took over in the states. I had one of her albums from a long time ago and thought, sure she's a great pianist, but after attending that live session, I knew i had to get more of her musical output off of amazon lol. The album I then bought thereafter had a recording of Rach 2 and a piano concerto she composed. Her composition was by far my favorite of the album.
    The way she described her ability in the lecture was quite interesting. She said it was like an infinite source that she was tapping into, and like a water faucet, she could open it or close it off on demand. She doesn't know exactly where it came from but she was able to improvise things she had never even heard of before (like ragtime) at some point in her early life. She even went to an institute to have her brain examined while she played lying down not able to look at the keys (i believe it was a portable keyboard). It was said in the brain scans, the areas of her brain that really lit up surprisingly were the ones that had to do with visualization and visual abilities.
    It's great that she kept up with it all these years; her palette just seems to be endlessly widening.

    • @jimmynguyen227
      @jimmynguyen227 Před rokem +8

      @@henrykwieniawski7233 i don't think so, but I don't know for sure. I don't think I've heard her play anything jazzy ever honestly. I personally hear a good amount of influence from guys like Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev in this video like when I heard her live back a couple years ago and even in many other CZcams videos you can find, such as the one where she improvised a whole soundtrack for a silent film... but this still feels so fresh and original. I do know that she had kept her abilities to herself for so many years while still training to be a traditional classical pianist until Martha Argerich heard her improvising in passing (either this was in a class or like before/after a concert) and then told her she had to share her improvisations with the world and do more with it in public concerts.

    • @jimmynguyen227
      @jimmynguyen227 Před rokem +1

      @@fordstone6308 interestingly enough, i watch Sadhguru's videos from time to time and his channel made a recent video fittingly about Beethoven and whether he was an unconscious or conscious genius. Halfway through the video, I saw Ramanujan's name for the first time as Sadhguru compared Beethoven's abilities to those of Ramanujan's, his being able to describe black holes in the form of equations, suggesting both abilities came from going within and being conscious--especially since Beethoven's outer ability to hear no longer contributed to his musical abilities.

    Fantastic playing! Gabriella is a natural composer. I’ve known maybe 2 people who could do that on her level, but they were extremely exceptional performers. It’s not a talent that just anyone can pick up, but it would be beneficial to every player to try this and do it as often as possible. You get a lot better. A lot! Of course Gabriella is in a league of a very small number of performers, but you don’t have to be as amazing as she to benefit from doing it daily. What distinguishes Gabriella’s improvisation is the completeness of it. Polished. As if each song is a composition she’s honed for years. THAT is unusual!

    I saw her about 5 years back (or so) play Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini with the Houston Symphony. I knew of her improvising skills before hand, but when she came out and literally jammed on the Rach--better than anyone I have seen play it live before (and I have seen many) it just blew me away. I didn't expect her classical mastery to be beyond the many "stars" I had seen play it before, but she was THAT good. Gabriel Montero is one of the very best and as good as any "big names" out there...she just chooses a lower profile.

    Thank you, Ms. Monteiro: underneath the astounding creativity on the spot, I hear a flawless command of technique, so that all the ways in which a dynamic keyboard can express emotion are not only as available to you at will as are thoughtful words and phrases and concepts, but that you have explored over a long career all the nuances and possibilities of those techniques. Your ease, and facility with that vocabulary inspires us to do the hard work early in our careers to make the piano, an extension of our voice.
    I am 73 years old and 50 years from playing piano any better than a goose playing the harmonica. But I can listen. And you have made me a better listener as I try to anticipate, then follow your images and structures and songs.

  • @luigipati3815
    @luigipati3815 Před rokem +1

    this is one of the most extraordinary pianists of the LAST 100 YEARS. The improvisations are faultless, as well as the technique. She should definitely be a composer for the piano. However, this "many emotions, such as curious, etc" is a simplistic concept imagined by simple audiences.....as Arnold Schoenberg said: "Music cannot express the extra-musical.". I'd say: "language cannot define the musical", i.e. music is its own dimension, free from all others, including that of "defined" human "emotions". This is NOT a criticism about Montero, who is really an EXTRAORDINARY pianist and musician, one of the best 5 or 6 pianists in the world. She's simply "lowering herself to the level of her audience", so to speak, i.e. she's just doing what she's being asked to do. So none of what I mentioned is her fault. I am simply saying that common human emotions such as sadness, happiness, etc. are too limiting for the most beautiful and greatest of all arts, which is music. She's basically being asked to sum up Latin, Greek and Japanese in 10 simple words. And I am sure she would agree with me. For example, when you hear For Elise you aren't hearing simple sadness, but a huge palette of colours that no one has even defined yet in words. In other words: music goes beyond simple emotions, words, definitions, etc. But anyways, this is most certainly an amazing course! Hats off just to have a musician of her caliber in the studio.

    Gabriella, I hope this somehow gets to you. I’m also a classical improvisor, not in your league, but it’s something that I do because it’s important to me. But in 1979 I began studying the politics and hidden military actions of our country (USA). Subscribing to every journal I could find from the far right to the far left, and everything in between, I began learning. I took about 30 of them at a time, subscribing with money I should have spent on food, but I’d tighten my belt and just subscribe. Skipping the details, 30 years later I realized what a tangled mess it is, and how there are so many groups and individual seeking power. I had already sacrificed my solo career to this. I was a saxophonist, but I also arranged and directed, so that’s how I made my living in the 1990s and 2000s. I finally realized that knowing what’s “really” happening in politics had not done much for me, and I’d found that nearly everyone who expressed an interest was really just wanting to tell me what they believed. They didn’t want to hear what I said. I predicted an event like 9/11 would happen early in Bush’s term, and it did. I predicted we’d be at war in the beginning of his 3rd year, and we were. I predicted the rise of Trump and that he would mount an insurrection rather than leave when we voted him out. This I said in 2016 before he was actually elected.
    But nobody listened.
    In 2019 I formally switched to piano, bought a Boston/Steinway grand, and I’m playing Debussy, Skriabin, Prokofiev, and tons of Bach, along with many others. And I found my real calling: improvising classically. I’ve left politics behind now.
    Please let me give you my heartfelt comments on what you are doing. Your improvisatory (compositional) skills are off the charts so far above anyone else doing that today that you are a VERY IMPORTANT figure in music. We need you. I survived the academy, and so did you, but most musicians get turned into professors by it. It kills the creative spirit. We NEED YOU! Please, you’ve given all you can to the politics and fate of your country. You’ve been very effective. But now you just expose yourself to danger in a world writhing in violence. You’ve given more than your share. Please, now, turn back to music with all your heart and teach us to respond to the real thing - which you have in abundance - and to move beyond the music museum that has been the academy, the concert circuit, the competitions, and all that have combined to render music irrelevant in our time when we need it most. You have what the world needs to hear and see. Please, follow Marta Argerich’s advice and put it out there for the world. Please reserve your remaining years for promoting the actual language of music and encouraging others to follow in your footsteps. Most of us probably do some closet improvising. I spend about half my piano practice time (½ of 4 to 6 hours daily) improvising classically. Sometimes Old Bach visits and shows me how it’s done. Really, it feels like he just appears in the music. I’d love to understand how it works, how it happens, but I don’t. And Old Bach only comes occasionally. He’s not there every day. But when it happens, it’s the most amazing feeling in the world, and the music that comes out leaves me shaken and in tears. When I found that YOU can do this at will, always, I was an instant fan. A disciple might be closer to the truth. But that brings me to a closing argument: if Jesus - assuming he existed - actually returned to earth, nobody would listen to him. They’re too caught in their own webs to understand. They’d just assume he was another fraud. David Blaine can do magic tricks that put to shame “water-to-wine” or even resurrecting yourself, so the people aren’t going to accept tricks as proof. It’s the same in politics. If you have all the answers, if you have the inside info, that’s great, but most people don’t want to hear it. You’re in danger if you continue fighting these massive forces backed by nearly half the people (the easily duped ones). Please spare yourself and give the musical community the greatest gift since Sebastian Bach; Gabriella Montero. You don’t have to understand how it works. You’re there, and the world is ready. Please do that. You can always be a resource for those who need you in Venezuela and elsewhere where autocratic power subverts democracy. You can still help the causes. But what you can do in music - and you don’t have to believe it; it’s true regardless - what you have in music is orders of magnitude more important than trying to fix their politics.

All of our favorite composers like bach, mozart, beethoven, chopin, liszt, etc were known at the time not only for their groundbreaking compositions, but also for their unbelievable improvisation skills. People like her who keep this tradition alive are the ones who can truly define themselves as real musicians. Another modern example could be Lucas debargue, an amazing french pianist who often improvises at the end of his concerts with outstanding ease.

      it's good to see it coming back - it's in the uk board exams now. I got one of montero's cds ages ago recorded at abbey road i think. she doesn't say her ideas how she became so fluid and harmonically learned

    Variation # 8/Cranky at 9:34 strikes me was a bit Prokofiev-like. Great video overall and thanks for sharing Gabriela Montero's amazing musical talent!

    My wife a few seconds of terrified and immediately recognized Für Elise. This was much harder for me. Some passages are far from the original, like also in WoO80 variations.

    I never have once had so many emotions listening to Fur Elise, but this did it for me. When I listened to the movement of “Tender” I honestly cried and I had to pause the video for a moment. It was so beautiful and just so moving. 😢❤️ Bravo to Gabriella and her amazing talents!

    Montero is a genius . A great player who Argerich played with and promoted . Like most 19th century players she composes . Her "sad" rendition shows her imagination. "Confused" says she could be a Viennese 2nd school if she wanted . Tired is perfect,laborious intervals in left hand between Rach and Shostakovich really. Terrified shows she can think and feel on so many levels! I cant believe this remarkable musician ! Infuriated. These are finished compositions. She must have written a concerto and Sonata by now . Tranquil .Hear her in Chopin bminor Sonata!

    I've heard her improvise live in concert where she came up with melodies that were so good I _wish_ I could steal them. It's too bad she doesn't expand them into full compositions (I think she's written only 2 full-length compositions so far). Sigh.
