I'm always finding excuses to play in the woods. Keeping isopods has given me another reason to go. I plan to look for mushrooms tomorrow.
:) I need to get out more. Good that this hobby spawns off other interests like this.
I live right next to a park with tons of oak trees, wood, and mushrooms! I collect all of my materials â€ïž
Very nice. How perfect.
We take the pups for a lot of walks and hikes and I almost always have some bags to grab some leaves or wood. We also walk around rivers to find nice pieces of drift wood for our other enclousures.
Nice! Perfect.
I love collecting. My family who live in other places, also collect for me.
Nice.... always good to have someone else do the work for you (Love you Angie :)
I enjoy every minute of it â€ïž
Nice one helping wally !
Thanks Gary
:D
I have a 50 mile drive to the woods, nothing but sagebrush for me. That looks like an awesome place to gather the goods!
50 miles! Ouch. I hope you collected enough for a few years. We take for granted the fact that every 5 miles it seems like there is a park or woods where we can collect.
This looks so relaxing.
It really is.
Itâs definitely good for the soul!
I use a few of my native MI species of isopods in all of my bio active snake racks. That way, a few times a year, I can pitch some of the dirty/old substrate into my gardens or my woods & not worry about introducing any other species to my area. I love harvesting leaves & old hardwood pieces for them & the snakes love their setups too!
Ahhhh, great idea!!!!
đđđ
Thank you buddy.
I collect in the woods đ
I am big into mycology so I am always foraging.
I have also been finding all sorts of beautiful isopods with high yellow colours on their back.
Oh! Nice. send me photos on FB if you get a chance.
I would love a follow up with how to boil/dry decontaminate nature picked wood for your culture.
Sounds like a great video. Just added it to the 'suggestion' list. Thank you.
Youâre very welcome Wally! Hopefully this helps others!
Some great comments on this video Angie. All credit to you! Thanks again.
Supreme Gecko anytime!
Great video. Wow, a snapping turtle. Be careful!
Thanks Van. I appreciate your support. Yes, crazy to see that turtle.
Thanks Van! Lotsa snappers at this place!
Well, this is catch-up Saturday lol, I always collect my stuff from the woods, never wash it either - can't see the point really if you know where it's come from and there are no pesticides etc around. Bag fulls of moss, tonnes of mossy bark and lots of oak leaves to be had out there for free. Why buy it? Mushrooms grow everywhere here because of our terrible weather, just like the moss. Handy for something at least lol Nice one Wally
Free stuff is the best stuff!!! (and any cleaning really takes away the good stuff- like good bacteria).
I went hunting in the woods today and brought home some wild isopods. I set them up in a culture. So wish me luck!
Nice!!!! Congrats and I KNOW you will do well with them. (just message me if you have any questions).
Iâve gone out and collected magnolia leaves for my frogs and pieces of wood. Canât beat free. Lol
You stole my like "can't beat free" :)
too cool, i went out and spent a whole day in the woods collecting diffrent bits of wood and leaves last weekend
Nice. Always so relaxing! Did you find everything you needed?
@@SupremeGecko And more! i should be pretty set for winter i think. I found some pretty nice pieces of soft flaky wood
@@toiletpete Perfect. I live to collect, put them all into a big plastic container, then, collect the dust/debris at the bottom and use it to mix into my soils.
Awesome video wally and angie. Iâve always struggled to find rotten wood as I wasnât sure what it looked like. This video helped a lot! I went out earlier and collected lots of rotten wood and I got free native isopods with it, just in time for my Pachnoda marginata coming. Thanks again đ
All the credit goes to Angie. I just edited to take away her naughty words (just kidding!!!!).
Glad to help!
Great video and I learned a lot. I never would have thought of picking mushrooms. Iâm lucky enough to have access to unlimited leaves and wood. Iâm using your method for the extra bags- just leaving them in the bag. The oneâs I need now, I bake at 200 for about 30â.
I am right with you. I take it for granted that I have woods less than a mile away. I do the bags as I am just plain lazy ;)
This was very cool. I like to go out in the desert when it's not 110 out lol. No woods around heređgreat vidđ€đđđ
Thank you very much. She did such a great job. Luck to have friends like this.
Thanks!
Great video (as usual)... what I like best is that we actually see what is good or bad... I need to remember to bring a good camera with me next time I head out foraging...
:) The next time I head out foraging, I need to remember to head out foraging.
Thanks Ken! Thatâs what I was hoping for. To show whatâs good and what isnât!
Me too XD
Awesome video al always Wally! Diggin the goat! I love mushroom hunting lol always fun to have something to do in the wood besides just walk or destroy nature lol
Thank you. All credit to Angie for her help and nice video.
Thanks! I appreciate that!
Great video! I collect most of my leaves in the backyard, but for wood, I go into the canyon and find dead scrub oak and maple branches.
Perfect. I was told on one of the forums that it is illegal (in our state) to collect ANYTHING from the woods. So, after a couple hours on the phone chasing folks around (was really worried about putting up a video encouraging others to do something illegal), I hit a biologist for the DNR and he confirmed as long as I was not collecting for personal or commercial firewood purposes (and not on State National Areas) I could freely collect any material. State forest, wildlife areas, state trails cool but not SNAs. Not sure if this holds true for other states.... and probably more info that you were looking for :)
Just commenting to say how much I appreciate this channel. Recently got into isopods and I constantly refer to your vids (especially reviews) to troubleshoot my setups. Hopefully my pods will thrive. Thanks Wally. (p.s. would love to join the giveaway contest!)
Thank you so much for the kind words. If you ever have specific questions, feel free to message me on FB (Wally Kern or the Supreme Gecko FB business page) or on IG. You are in for the giveaway. Feel free to leave as many comments as you like on this year's videos to be entered 1 time for each comment :)
@@SupremeGecko Awesome, will do! Plenty more comments coming your way :]
@@bearthemighty Thank you!
Thank you Wally and Angie. The trees were beautiful. I have never gone mushroom hunting. I would like to see another video on mushrooms. I collect my own wood and leaves in my yard and going around town in my chair. The have no way to go on the country, but I find plenty in town
Angie knows a lot more than I do but there is so much to understand about mushrooms. But good luck with your hunting. I need to get out too.
What kind of video would you like to see regarding mushrooms? If itâs how to prepare them for isopods, thatâs Wallyâs job haha
@@angieschwartz5294 I would like to see more about collecting mushrooms. Thank you.
Barb Helle itâs starting to get a little late in the season. Maybe Wally and I can get something together
@@angieschwartz5294 Yes I understand. Mushroom hunting may be good for next year. I will probably not be on here much for a week. My nephew passed away last night unexpectedly.
I love looking for isopod resources in the woods! I am feeding all of the isopods right now! I realize I should probably get some more leaves soon đ€
Get them now and double what you think you will need. Last year, I estimated I would need 6 big bags. I collected 30! I have 2 left. Collection time again.
@@SupremeGecko ya thats probably a good idea considering this is the time of year all of the leaves fall and I definitely don't want to run out in winter
Great video
Thank you. And all credit goes to Angie.
Thanks!
I do I have a wooded trail that runs by my house through town by the beach and woods I found some wood and lichen just now definitely get seed pods with my son and anytime I see someone bagging leaves or fallen trees from storms like Ian that just came through I collect it for my isopods and millipedes and used bioactive in my 7 ft water monitor and black throat monitors enclosures last 10+ yrs
Way to go!!!! Nice job.
Thats such a cool turtle! I wish there were more turtles around here in Washington
Snapping turtles are so very cool. But that one could have easily taken Angie's fingers off (if not hand). Something not to be played with.
@@SupremeGecko ya for sure! They have a very powerful bite so, it is probably good to keep a distance
My roommate and I have been getting into foraging for native edible plants (and fungi). Haven't collected any isopods of my own yet but I'd like to!
How cool! What a great time together.
Enjoyed the video. Looking forwward to my own trip to the woods next week,
If this influenced you to head out to the woods, that is fantastic!
Thanks! Enjoy Mother Nature next week!
This was a helpful video for me as I often go hiking (as a pretext to find stuff for my isopod enclosures). Very useful to see what passes as good wood and mushrooms -- before I wasn't really sure, other than to check wood for flakiness. Thanks Wally and Angela. (p.s. I'd like to participate in the giveaway)
You are most welcome. I'm glad this works for you and was very thankful Angie did this for us. (also, EACH comment on ANY video in 2020 will be counted for the giveaway so get out there and start commenting!!! ;)
Youâre welcome! Hope it helps!
I've got some thick woods near my house, I bring a dog or two with me and we collect leaves, bark, rotting wood, moss, seed pods, and native isopods occasionally. I'm really searching for a giant centipede to create a bioactive terrarium around.
Outstanding. What a nice time you must have. For a giant centipede, have you tried Bugs in Cyberspace or Animal House in Wisc.?
@@SupremeGecko I check Bugs in Cyberspace periodically, they have been sold out. I actually got a Giant texas pede from him several years ago, need a new one now! I'll check Animal House, thanks for the suggestion!
@@thejuggernaut3778 tell them Wally sent you :)
I just went and explored the woods found a bunch of stuff even a baby rattle snake
That is so cool! Congratulations.
Man, that goatee is coming in nice! I recently went out collecting and got surprised by finding a bunch of P. scaber, as I've only ever found A. vulgare in my neck of the woods. I even found two orange ones, which I was pretty excited about (despite them being common in the hobby)
Thanks buddy. I'm still feeling it out to see how it looks. Oh my, those sound like some golden nuggets! Congrats.
Yesterday I got half a trash bag full of dead leaves for winter and I think i will have to go get some more today
Nice! I've only raked half our yard. Looking forward to gathering leaves for the rest of the yard.
Iâd love to Participate in this years Give Away đ€
Thank you FDT. I wish you all the luck in the world.
Supreme Gecko Keep the Magic Going đ
I really enjoy all of the isopod videos on Your channel, and of course the reptiles, thanks! Also,,random question, if you keep multiple coleonyx mitratus do you notice they feed at separate times? Mine do,just curious, thanks
I believe I saw a similar question on the Coleonyx FB group. What that you? I have not noticed that mine do but I may not have been that observant :) Thank you for the very kind words.
@@SupremeGecko yes !that was definitely me asking on fb as well, just one of those things i had noticed and had me curious. I like peeking in on them, when they allow lol, as i have a ton of zebra isopods of all ages living in there as well, thank you so much for your reply and all of the info you get out to other hobbiests
@@jessicadanielson4543 Thought so. :) My pleasure entirely.
I wish we had more wooded areas around here.. I don't know if you have ever been here to my state Wally but trees only grow by the rivers all other tree had to be planted . and I think you are not to old to get out in nature lol.. nice to see that snapping turtle she Has great knowledge of the out doors . I do have a question if you can't get to the woods to find mushrooms can you buy some in the store to feed them and if so what mushrooms would you recommend we buy?
I did not get out once this year unfortunately. Next year for sure! That's a shame for your area. I take it for granted too much that we are so lucky here.
Mushrooms are pretty pricing in stores (as far as a supplemental food source for isopods)
The woods are a bit far from me and it takes an hour or so to get there
How do you prepare wood to ensure that you are not bringing nasties in your enclosures?
Great question- 1) either put them in a big black bag and let it sit in the sun for a week or two or 2) bake in the oven at around 210 for a half hour.
Hi Wall! I collect stuff from my yard. Iâm in a cast boot so I canât go into the woods. đ
Wherever you can get it ! Sorry to hear about your boot.
Do you pick the mushrooms to feed your isopods?
I pick some and Angie picks some for me.
If you have a dog, check for isopods in their dog poo.
Funniest comment I think I've ever had :) Thanks.
Hey Wally! How are you and Nanette?
Doing well. Some Covid scares but nothing +. Doing well though. Thank you for asking.
Wally what do you plan to do with that giant mushroom Angie found for you? Can that be isopod food?
I'll bake it, dry it out, but it up, and feed it to the isopods.
I think Wally meant cut it up :)
Does it matter what type of wood you put in with the isopods?
To be honest, for flaking wood like this, I don't care too much (other than non-toxic of course).
How do you care for dairy cow isopods?
:) I have a bunch of Isopod Setup Review videos and several feature Dairy Cows. I also have a Dairy Cow specific video that starts "Moooooo"
@@SupremeGecko Thanks! I really appreciate that you take the time to read and reply to all comments!
@@mellohi_kitsunee3063 I try to reply at the most in one day
I ues to go out in the woods
The backwoods? Sorry. Thanks for watching the video
Hey Wally, I collected some wood 3 weeks ago and left it in a bag since then, I used it a week ago and now it is growing mold and I have gnats... what should I do?
Great that you collected the wood. Congratulations. The time in the bag was great to get rid of any hanger-on insects. The reason for the mold is because it is a new enclosure (new substrate), it might be too moist in the enclosure, and also there might not be enough ventilation. Would you like to send me a photo or video of the enclosure to my FB or IG page? (or to Wally Kern on FB)
@@SupremeGecko sent a photo on facebook đ
@@louiseckeman2021 got them and replied
Are you aware of any mushrooms that are toxic to isopods? Are human-toxic mushrooms such as Galerina marginata safe for isopods?
I don't have a list. Sorry
Is it safe to get isopods from the wild
Sure. As long as you legally collect and you isolate them.
Ok
So mushrooms are good to give to isopods? I actually just got a bunch in the mail yesterday!
Absolutely. I feed about once a month and the pods love them.
What type of mushrooms did you get?
@@frankdughtank8327 isopods, not mushrooms lol
@@PardoNdSchuman oops I read that wrong
@@PardoNdSchuman What isopods did you get?
Had to laugh at the comment about you being to old to go out collecting. With talking to you and Nanette at the different expoâs, it sounds like the type of harassment you would be giving and receiving from friends.
Angie is such a good friend to our family. We are really blessed (and I give it back as well as I get it).
Haha yeah he deserves it at times!
