- Wrestling Lists Presents - The Life and Career of Rowdy Roddy Piper
Remembered as one of the greatest villains in the history of wrestling, and one of the most beloved legends in the industry, Roddy Piper was one of the most unique individuals to step into the ring. He was wild and unhinged, especially with a mic in his hand.
His greatest asset was maybe his ability to draw emotion from fans, either when working as a good guy or a heel. This is a skill that is sorely lacking in today's wrestling product.
Piper's character and style of promo, much of it reflecting true to the man behind the gimmick, would go on to inspire future superstars in the wrestling industry. This video looks at the life and career of Rowdy Roddy Piper.
This mini wrestling documentary looks at Rowdy Roddy Piper in the AWA, his time in Jim Crockett Promotions, his debut in the WWF and his journey to WrestleMania 1, his Piper's Pit segments, his work against Bret Hart with the WWE Intercontinental Championship, Piper's 1996 WWF return and the Hollywood Backlot Brawl with Goldust, his work against Hollywood Hogan and the Starrcade 1996 fiasco, Piper's induction into the WWE Hall of Fame and his return to the company, and much more.

Roddy Piper is the ultimate example of what is missing in mainstream pro wrestling today. SO much personality, SO much character, SO much originality...
Thanks for all these vintage and tribute videos!
"Just when you think you know the answers, I change the questions."

Darius Kool he’s not even the first onehundredth person to say that supposed quote.
@@daytonasayswhat9333 He popularized it, though. Same with the "I came to kick-ass & chew bubblegum and I'm all out of bubblegum" saying.
@@TherealRNOwwfpooh --- I laughed so hard when I heard that line. 😆
@@daytonasayswhat9333 So what!!!! Was is funny when he said it? It is WWE/male soap opera, get a life!!

"I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass and I'm all out of bubblegum."
One of the Greatest Lines EVER in a movie!!
RIP "Hot Rod" We ALL Love & Miss You!!
Pipers Pit was my favorite and Hot Rod was my favorite all time wrestler. When he died I cried like a baby
Indeed, and now that I'm much older and know the struggles he faced growing up in respect him even more. Much respect to a true legend.
Best heel in the business period
Piper was great ahead of his time on the microphone the sad thing is he never won the World Championship. He was one of those wrestlers was great with or with out the belt but he should of had 1 run as Heavy weight champ it would of been wild. He was so great a great entertainer always had something going on. He did so much for wrestlemania 1 he was ahead of his time Pipers Pit!! He was great. He went through a very difficult life growing up he did great to were he reached in his life, and like he said I had a family and a house which I never had growing up.
There will never be another Roddy Piper. He broke the mold.
never,he was a novelty,now that he's left this world,now god has to deal with him,he was cool,damn cool,rip rebel
Not only an amazing wrestler, but he was in one of my all-time favorite movies, They Live. RIP Roddy.
Such a great bio, thank you! ! Love him or hate him, 1 of the biggest wrestling icons ever. " Piper's Pit," such a classic!
If not for piper I don't think hogan would not made it as big as he did like flair and dusty help make each other

There are 2 things you need to know about great wrestling promo's.

2) There was everybody else.
Spot on! No one could beat Rowdy's promos!!!
@CC Greening 8bv0
Let not 4get the Macho Man had some great promos too

Often misquoted, its actually "I am here to chew bubble gum, and kick ass"
40 year old Oregonian here, grew up with portland wrestling every weekend. piper, billy jack hayes, buddy rose, DYNAMITE KID, so many many more,
There will never be another Rowdy Roddy Piper. I still remember the promos he did with Black Gordman, those were hillarious. His feuds with Jimmy Snuka and the Tonga Kid were legendary. He knew how to piss off the crowd, I used to hate his guts early on. Who can ever forget the Pipers Pit segments on WWF? Those will never be duplicated. The man was a genius, RIP Roddy😀😀😀
Rowdy Roddy Piper, Oregon’s greatest adopted son. We are lucky to have him here. What a wonderful guy, great entertainer and he has an extremely nice family.
Roddy is truly missed.
Piper was not to be ignored. Even before he hit McMahonland, he had fans lining up to hate his guts. Eric Clapton plays the Fender Stratocaster, Piper played the crowd, live and on tv. He wasn't the biggest, the fastest, or the strongest. But to the end, he was the SMARTEST. God bless him and his family.
Really makes me sad that we lost Roddy so soon. He is was and will always be the greatest heel of all time. R.I.P Hot Rod.
Indeed. The greatest heel of all time and the greatest promo of all time. RIP to a true I.C.O.N.
A great heel and a great Babyface. R I P Roddy Piper.
I agree. There will never be another Rowdy Piper he is a Legend as was a great and Babyface
He was neither a heel or baby face he's always been a in between asshole type of guy lol
Piper was one of the greats he needed no title he was that great in and out of the ring
Piper was real when he grabbed a mic. He wasn't a persona or a catchphrase. That's why he was able to rile up crowds and make people either love him or love to hate him.
Rowdy Roddy Piper The Man, The Myth...…. The Icon. RIP Hot Rod you are truly missed.
He was controversial before that was
The thing to be.
A massive influence on the attitude era, and he fit right in with the ruthless aggression era!
@@trendmassacre8423 Definitely. He could strive in any era, for any company, and could cut a promo with anyone.

Awesome Job!! 👍 love the quote from The Rock." Heaven just got a lil rowdier!!"
That was a beautiful, awesome tribute from The Rock! From one legend to another.👏
Man gotta say, this one hit the heart. R.I.P

@@billyray5232 I agree wholeheartedly.
Wow. Great presentation on the Rowdy One. Love.
One of my favorite characters ever. RIP. There will never be another as good at selling the crazy.
Rowdy roddy piper one of the greatest wrestlers ever 😎👍👌
Piper and Savage. Hands down. With about 10 Honorable Mentions that run an extremely close 2nd (Hogan is not one of them. His selfish greed over the years keeps him far off my list. Refusing to give others a chance to hold the belt. Not even for a little while. Not even people like Andre, a supposed good friend. Yeah, right. Hogans best friend was Hogan.)
@@Brandon-rq3ys Totally agree
Piper's my favorite. I've been watching for over 50 years.
Randy Savage, Piper, Curt Henning, Shawn Michaels and Ric Flair are the 5 best I've ever seen in my 30 years of watching wrestling.
Agreed, piper, henning, bret, flair and savage🙌
Rowdy, probably the most beloved Legend because he was without a doubt one of the most real human beings. EVER.
Piper one of the GREATS in the biz. Not the most talented guy in the ring but he made things count. Great on the mic and getting people to care. Just awesome.
So great that there was no need to put a title on him to generate heat. That's a mark of a legend.
I disagree. Piper has some AMAZING matches out of Portland with Don Owens. 🧐
Some of his matches with Buddy Rose were fantastic.
@@shannonmurray34 exactly! And the one time he did win a belt (intercontinental) he got pinned clean and put Bret Hart over like crazy at summerslam '91. Roddy rarely got pinned clean in his career., but he truly loved Bret and his family.
When Rowdy got to heaven, he hunted down “‘Frank Williams” , interviewed him, hugged it out and both went on to celebrate their perpetual prize of peace ,love and happiness forever!!.
R.I.P. Legend Destroyer
I met Rod at a Comic Con show. He was late by a half an hour but when he did show the people started to chant, "Rowdy! Rowdy!" He loved it and explained his delay. My then g/f kissed him before leaving and I think he was embarrassed. RIP RRP!
Piper did a few shows for Portland Wrestling and was part owner of a Garage repair shop in Portland called Piper's Pit Stop out on Division Street. He WAS Wrestling. RIP.
pipers pit stop was on 188th Glisan, i live less than 5 min away. if he had a shop on division it wasnt there long, the shop on glisan is still a auto shop today
He was always loyal to the Owens family too.
Piper was a folk hero here in Portland Oregon.

Thank you Rowdy Piper for allowing me to know such great legends like you watching on TV when I was kid. Wrestling in 80's was great cause of wrestlers like you. So much love for you and so much respect for you. RIP heaven is gonna need someone to control your Rowdyness which in turn is not going happen. Some of these videos choked me up a bit but this brought a tear to my eye. We miss you Hotrod. Thanks for making these videos.
It's been years but I still can't believe he's gone. He was just so special
An absolutely brilliant video. Especially the earlier photos in his career. Keep up the great work!!!
Piper was crazy i remeber being a kid in the late 80s watching him always interesting lol
Roddy was the Best ,no doubt about it!
I still have a poster of him to this day!
I’m 58 ha
Roddy Piper was in a class all by himself. He was unpredictable before, during and after his matches. One of the most unique aspects of his career is that he never had a signature finishing move, until he used the sleeper move in WrestleMania 3. He was so talented on the mic that wrestling gave him his own interview segment called "The Piper's Pit". The only one that can hold a candle to him on the mic was the Macho Man. He not only raised the bar, he blasted that sucker to the moon. R.I.P. Hot Rod
Jake Roberts' Snake Pit segments were at least as good as Piper's Pits
Lol, Macho never came close to Piper. Not even close to the same league on the mic. Jake Roberts was though. He was definitely as good as Piper.
"You don't throw rocks at a man with a machine gun" Roddy Piper

My childhood hero. I'm so glad I got to meet him 2 months before he passed away. Such a kind guy.
Hot Rod will always be my favorite wrestler. There are very few in the industry that can match his skills on the Mike. When you hated Roddy, he made sure there was no doubts. When you loved him, he made sure he left no doubts. Thank You Roddy for your years of entertaining us. You will never be forgotten.
Never wanted or needed a title thats saying something
Roddy was a huge influence on me in my teens and early 20's. In the early 90's I was training in L.A. to get into wrestling. I had already developed the Romeo Brawley persona which was somewhere in between Roddy and the Brooklyn Brawler, Steve Lombardi. I was big and fairly quick for my size (6'4 300 lbs.) and I tried to talk trash as well as Roddy. Every now and then I hit that mark. In some off the cuff talking just goofing around with the guys at the gym somebody mentioned that I sounded like Roddy. There was no bigger compliment.
It was also that day that Bam Bam had showed up to work out with us and put some pieces of what we'd been learning together in the ring. He made me look like I knew what I was doing. Working with him was an experience I'll never forget. He told me on the side "Keep up the work and you'll work with Roddy some day.. maybe a tag team with the Big Boss Man." Which wasn't something I'd thought about even though we were similar size, build and look like I could be his brother (even today).
Shortly before Roddy passed I had finally connected with him on Twitter. There was one insult that I use (mostly in fun) today that never left my mind after Roddy said it in the early 90's.
"Did your mama put your swing in front of a wall?"
I asked Roddy about this because I couldn't remember who he said it to. I tweeted it out and went to bed. I woke up the next morning to find a reply from Roddy.. "It was George the Animal Steele!" After all the years of trash talk and all the comments he made. He could remember one quote and who he said it to 20 years later.
The reason I say all of this is because Roddy fought his own demons his entire life and into death. I want as many people to know that those demons were lying to him. He was respected. He was loved and he made a huge impact on my life and many others. He was a good, honorable, faulty man. I wish I could have worked with him. I'd be honored to call him my friend.
Highlight of my independent wrestling career was being in the same ring with Roddy May 2004 for Empire State Wrestling in Niagara Falls NY. Then becoming Roddy's Theatrical and appearance manager in 2013. And working with him for the last two years of his life. RIP to a True Legend. Miss you man.
Looking forward to watching this one mate 🏴🏴🏴
Heaven just got a little rowdier 😊 There is only one "rowdy one" 🙏
Thank you for this. Piper was one of the greats. Never held the championship belt, but a perennial fan favourite whether as a heel or a face.
I've come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass, and I'm all outa bubblegum. Best improvised movie line EVER
Man, hes great at pumping out good vids that aren't just top 10s. Thank you 👍
Fondly remembered, dearly missed... Roddy lived the wrestling entertainement as no other. He was part of it, saw it grow international, had a legendary run, and most of all, he did his own thing. Nothing but love and respect.
Popper and Savage were 2 of the best villains I can remember. Both gave such great promos.
When I first heard of Roddy, back in the 1970's, I didn't think much of him; however, by the time he started wrestling in the WWF for Vince Jr , you couldn't help but take notice of his greatness. He was destined to be the great foil for professional wrestlers, Face or Heel.
God allowed Rod to experience some things in life that mist people can't possibly imagine, but He also gave him the talent to excel at being one of the greatest characters ever to step into the squared circle.
I first discovered Roddy Piper in 81 as color commentary for Georgia championship wrestling, alongside commentator great,Gordon Solie. It is my opinion, that the rowdy one was in his prime,at least verbally.I saw stellar promos, quick wit without equal, charisma, charm, unparalled showmanship/entertainment; everything an impressionable, growing 13 year old like myself needed.
Piper known for one of the best lines in movie! As well, as being one of the best wrestlers ever, Face or Heel! Btw, if you haven't ever seen, "They Live," make sure you check it out!
As a Kid growing up in this Era....It hit hard when he passed.
I remember that Match with the Mountie, he had a shock stick, that he used on the opponents to put them down, and when it didnt work, on Hot Rod, who then jumped up and defeated him, he tore off the HotRod Tshirt, to reveal another one underneath that said Shockproof on it. one of the best moments ever.
I was born in 78 in Glasgow and when I first got into wrestling it was right around the same time as when mania started and I instantly fell in love with piper as a wrestler I was too young to realise that he wasn't born in Scotland but he had the Scottish persona bagpipes kilt all the hallmarks whilst every other kid liked hogan savage and warrior I wanted to be different and instantly he was my favourite wrestler amazing performer great charisma and a fan favourite.... Legend
Piper and Rude was the best match I had ever seen live in LA; the crowd went bizerk when he entered while interrupting Rude's theme music. They started brawling before ever making it to the ring. The match looked better than a real fight. That's because they were really hitting each other with verocity.
Will miss both of them!
I met him and i can tell you all!!!!
He was the coolest man i ever met!!!!!!
I grew up watching him here in Portland as a child in the 80s on Portland wrestling. Alway my favorite wrestler and had the honor of speaking with him at a restaurant in Hillsboro, Oregon when I was about 11. Even though he was eating with his family he still took the time to talk to me.... great guy. Miss him.
Roddy Piper was the best, he could talk the talk and walk the walk like no one else, that made for many great Saturday and Sunday mornings for me as a kid, RIP Hot Rod.

I’m a proud fellow Canadian. Roddy always was, and always will be, my favourite wrestler. Hands down. I met him a couple of times doing cameos in a couple of movies he was in here in Canada. I’m a paramedic, and was used to play one in the movies he was in. I got to hang out with him at the local premieres. He was so gracious and humble. I’ll cherish those memories forever. I even have some pics with him - including one of him putting me in the sleeper hold. Such a gentle giant. Love him and miss him terribly.
One of the best talkers ever, got you into wrestling matches hard. RIP

The 1988 film They Live by John Carpenter starring Roddy Piper is in many ways a documentary and a prophetic film, more relevant in the modern world.
So is Hell Comes To Frogtown. Lol.
I just want to know where to get my sunglasses.....pretty sure they live.
@@michaelsmyth6296 yeah for real and they are probably all Democrat’s
In "They Live", the news network 'Cable 54' is broadcasting [spellcasting] a signal (& TV programming) that shapes & controls the minds & perceptions of the human population ... When you learn GEMATRIA (what Eye call the 'Matrix Code'), you wake up to/from the Matrix & learn how it works & who's running the show... You learn that "Jesuit Order" = 54 ... Also, "The Jesuit Order" = 201, a VERY important number to the Jesuits, which is significant when you realize that Roddy Piper died on the 201st day of his age. (Btw, the founder of the 'Illuminati' Adam Weishaupt was a Jesuit)... LEARN GEMATRIA TO LIFT THE VEIL & SEE THRU THE MATRIX. A good place to start would be 'Gematria Effect News'.
I came to kick ass....and chew bubble gum....y'all know the rest
R.I.P Roddy Piper one of the all time greats in professional wrestling..thank u for making a video about him
Ahh man l got chills watching this.

Roddy was one of my fav characters and one of the pillars in wrestling's early TV era.
When it comes to in-ring storytelling and promos he was a novelty, truly one of a kind and gifted beyond words. He set a very high bar, that only few had ever reached.
As a Black woman I have to agree with the narrator. I do not believe in any way that Piper was racist or trying to offend Black people. Some people just can't take a joke or separate life from a show.
As a Black woman, I disagree. His intention was to be offensive, as offensive as possible - that's a big part of wrestling, especially before this PG era. And as a Black wrestler, I wouldn't have wanted to wrestle him at all. We can separate life from TV, but there's a large part of this country that only experiences Black people via media. Therefore, it's very important that images of all marginalized groups are fair, thorough depictions - this includes Black people, women, Asian people, etc. And I have to say, while I enjoyed this documentary, I don't think a white man gets to dictate what is or is not offensive to non-white people.
@@loveblackpoem I truly respect your opinion and found it very well said. 👍
