    I love the potting soil. It's extremely cheap (50 cents a bag) and the flowers in my outdoor garden bed LOVE IT! It's pretty good quality stuff.

    I bought several of the blue bags of soil. Mine also had wood chips in it. I plan to sift it and use the wood chips in the bottom of my containers or in my compost. Then mix it with a higher quality potting soil to cut down on the cost of my container garden.

    I bought the same blue bag, and it had no sand in it nor wood pieces. Mine was completely just plain dirt. It reminded me of mud! It just sticks to your skin like thin silky mud. I mixed it with about 50% perlite and I kid you not the “soil”runs right out through the drainage hole! It’s so fine and nothing keeping it together. It’s just a mushy mess when wet, I’m so disappointed. Hopefully it doesn’t hurt or kill the succulents I repotted 😩 🤞🏽. I can’t believe how different my mix was from your bag!

    • @vesgardens

      WOW! Did you only experience this with one bag or multiple? Not that it matters, I'd be mad either way. I'd repot the succulents too if you can! I watched someone else's video of them using this bag and theirs had red clay in it. Safe to say these bags are a gamble!

    • @vesgardens
      @vesgardens  Před 3 lety +2

      Yeah, soil mites were definitely a new thing for me. I checked the ingredient mixes again, both bags contain pine bark and compost/manure compost, which the mites are attracted to. Maybe I got a "bad" bag? Idk which one they came from since I mixed them.
      For the first time, I am trying to make leaf mulch, not much has been happening since it's been cold? And I would like to try burying small food scrap piles to see how that works. I don't plan on making a compost bin anytime soon.

    I've looked for and never found the seed starting mix, which I'd be glad try try since it's from American Seed. I bought a different brand at Home Depot instead - a much larger bag, so the total cost is probably about the same. Several years ago I bought potting soil at DT and it was pretty good, and larger bags than what they currently have, so I haven't bought soil there since. I usually use Kellogg Patio Plus for my outdoor containers.

    Hi vesma! I actually bought the blue bag from dollar tree and wanted to see what others had to say. Surprisingly seeing your video, I see that the didn't put the ingredients on your bag (which is odd because the one I have does have it right below where it says use for indoor & outdoor). It says "contain composted aged softwood bark fines, humus, sand, perlite." What are your thoughts on the ingredients? I'm still new at gardening and don't know if these are a good media.

    • @vesgardens
      @vesgardens  Před 3 lety +3

      It's crazy how much the bags differ. I've seen someone else have clay in their bag and another person told me they didn't have sand in theirs, and I could've sworn I saw a piece of charcoal in my bag too.
      I've read humus is good for soil and sand is good for drainage. Personally, I've never worked with sand in any of my mixes so this is new for me.
      I think you have a good mix on your hands! If you wanted to mix in some peat moss or coco coir, you could. I mixed coco coir with mine (after straining) and I like it. I consider that my premium mix now 🤣 If you have really chunky pieces I'd strain the mix so you can have more control over that.
      I do use this mix and so far it's been fine! Happy gardening! I hope everything grows beautifully for you.

    • @yawn011
      @yawn011 Před 3 lety +2

      @@vesgardens yes . I see skinny boy randy use it and his had clay and when I looked at mine it was just sand and bark. I barely saw perlite.. really good point to add coco mix. I put my peace lily in the soil by it self and it already rotted it so it does need something to fluff it up. Thanks for replying. I really appreciate your input. Lol I guess you get what you pay for lol but I'm sure with the stuff you add it will still come out a good deal but as a new grower it's really difficult to make quick calls like that.

    • @vesgardens
      @vesgardens  Před 3 lety +1

      @@yawn011 Yes! It was Randy's video that I saw his bag had clay in. I found coco coir bricks at Walmart. Check online to see if any stores near you carry it and get a few! I love coco coir and will be choosing this over peat from now on (unless peat is my only option). And yes, once you add things to it you should have a good mix. And you're welcome! Even though I've grown plants for years, i decided to take it more seriously, so I'm fairly new as well and I will try to help if I can. If I can't I will refer you to someone/a video that can!

    I just bought 2 of the blue bags of Dollar Tree potting soil mine has wood chips and tiny twigs in it I'm going to sift it. I am pretty sure it's compost sand and dirt mix. If anyone is concerned about fungus gnats mites etc in it just pour boiling water over it kills everything that's what I do you, my plants are loving it so far

  • @hecatewolf2451
    @hecatewolf2451 Před 2 lety +1

    I bought the blue bag from dollar tree I saw perlite and sand and like bark chips in it I think there is compost because I put vinegar and lemon juice and I have a soil ph meter it went from 8 alkaine to 5 acidic and the next day I checked it and it went back to a 8 I heard compost neutralizes too acidic soil. Idk if the meter works anymore now it just says 8 lol I have the three way meter I guess it broke and soil meters are not really accurate . Too bad dollar tree don`t have the pink bag anymore it says the ingredients other stores have it but it cost more than 1.25 . Since the blue bag does state it is potting soil they would not use garden soil so it must be compost I did see perlite and sand in mine . I don`t think they would straight up put garden soil because it would be false advertising and they know that and they would get in trouble they can`t lie . I guess it varies and since I saw the other comment stating it contains composted aged softwood bark fines, humus ,sand ,and perlite I believe it does and I did go through mine and saw some perlite ,sand , bark. Too bad the blue bag in mine does not state it but a majority of potting soil has compost and some type of draining element sand and or perlite this seems a very good potting soil for what you're paying for . By the way fabric pots are way better than plastic pots because I always had that problem with too much water and leaking too much out and root bound the fabric pots will get more air and make the plants drain excess water and no root bound too which is a plus. The downside of the blue bag is that it tend to vary you might get more sand and or perlite and it just clumps up the pink bag that dollar tree used to sell clumps up too I would just say put more perlite you dont need to add soil amendments only put soil amendments for plants that like really well draining soil it really depends what type of plant likes what soil use whatever soil amendments that seems to fit your plant needs.

  • @hecatewolf2451
    @hecatewolf2451 Před 2 lety +2

    I am not sure what nutrients this soil has but I would use a water soluble fertilizer you can also use coffee grounds for the nitrogen, dried bananas peels ,for potassium and phosphorus, iron and eggshell powder for calcium . Besides I am just guessing what are the ingredients this potting soil if you are worried about fungus gnats and or bugs in the soil which I think it does not you can add turmeric powder which is great as a antifungal and ants hate it and fungus gnats too.

    • @vesgardens

  • @hecatewolf2451
    @hecatewolf2451 Před 2 lety +1

    I am still a beginner but I learned from trial and error I won`t use plastic containers long term fabric pots are the best . Oh I had a mint plant last year and I saw bugs aphids and I was panicking and kept adding water then I add a baking soda ,olive oil, soap mixture did not work saw from a youtube remedy made it worse and I had an ant problem with my basil I did not know what to do before now I know I hate bugs they literally will kill a plant . Use turmeric powder for ants and to treat a fungal diseases and I just got a mini rose plant use turmeric powder for the wounds it will prevent from getting fungal diseases . Use hydrogen peroxide and water mixture to aerate soil and to kill bugs for this soil if you like it does help if the soil you get is like very clumpy and thick it does help alot and helps with drainage.

    I bought the blue bag. 2 bags @ a time 3 different stores. ALL had about 1cup of stones & sticks,in addition,2 bags had sand,2 bags had chunks of things that were chunks that looked & smelled like animal excrement!
    None of my bulbs grew. They were moist & firm,but no matter what I tried there were NO results. The Only flower seeds that grew were the sunflowers. Flower seed packets & the rolls of seeds in a box that you just pot & watered didn't grow. The flower basket hooks were so Weak after planting,I found the finished badkets upside down on the ground. They need a stronger "S" hook @ the top to hold the joined chains.
    The solar lights are MUCH smaller & cheaply made. Most of the DIY's I'd tried after seeing videos didn't work. Everythings much thinner & poorly made now. There's a serious decline in the quality of almost ALL the products. I've determined it's better to pay a little more elsewhere & atleast have things that work & last

    How many lbs/gallons do each type bags have in them? Trying to calculate how much I need for a terrarium and how much what I need will weigh. I don't have the need to go get a huge bag from the gardening centers of places like lowes or home depot.
    The terrarium is a 1960-1970s tiara casa tulip base with the 20 in diameter globe. I have replaced the original globe globe with a brand new a brand new UV resistant polycarbonate globe for a lamppost so it is one piece sphere. Which the 17.26 gallons of water It is capable of holding would weigh 144 pounds (if I were to use it as a fish tank instead). The tulip base is rather lightweight and being 50-60 years old and plastic held together with a bolt and washers at the thinnest place in the middle like an⏳. I have yet to figure out the best way to reinforce the base to be able to not break under the weight of plants, soil, and water inside of the globe.
    If it Collapses and breaks under the weight of the globe Not only will I have a mess yes I'm angry about cleaning up but also I would be heartbroken about is about Destroying the terrarium, it's Palma it's the exact same kind as my mom had while I was growing up so I'm kind of emotionally attached to it.

    • @vesgardens
      @vesgardens  Před 3 lety

      The potting soil is an 8lb bag and I don't remember the seed starting mix, but it's a really small bag. I don't recommend either one of those for your terrarium. The potting soil that I got has a lot of sand in it and it's really heavy. I'd recommend you make your own soil mix with coconut coir, perlite and whatever other amendments would be best for your plants. Coconut coir and perlite are very lightweight, well it'd be lighter than the potting soil found at Dollar Tree. I've found 2 quart coconut coir bricks at Walmart, but not every location has them so I'd do a search online to check before you go looking, if you choose to, same with Petco, I believe they have it too.
