This is why I hate when folks trash Janet's vocals. She recorded the majority of these harmonies before the heavy use of autotune, when vocals were recorded to tape. She stood there and recorded each piece to elevate the music! It's interesting the more she starting writing and producing, the more the harmonies jumped out. So many of her harmonies are my favorite, but IF is such a pop classic with those backings. But, her harmonies on her duet with BUSTA always made that song for me.

The most haunting thing about the way she stacks her vocals (for me) is how her vibrato is in sync

I think the reason her vocal abilities are so underrated is because no one ever asks her about them. When ppl interview her they are not interested in her background vocals, harmonies and vocal arrangements. If I ever met her I would love to have a convo and master class on how she does what she does best.

i think is the fact that JJ is so true with her music while being so private with her life and that's why ppl are more interesting about her life and trynna pick some of her because she's a little piece of mystere and as she always cute and kind in interviews she just going on whatever they ask about her... Come Back To Me, the harmonies at the beginning are the best. This is my favorite ballad of hers. The harmonies are in the entire song but it's always the beginning of the song that gets you. 😊

2) I think all the Jacksons are gifted with amazing ears, pitch and voice control... the best singers hit that note dead in the center. No sliding into it, no scooping...no! Dead in the center. The Jacksons all do that.
My opinion. What she lacks in vocal range like some other artists, she makes it up elsewhere

I mention Janet.’s bg so much to people who pay attention to the intricacies of singing how amazing Janet.’s bgs are. I think, for that, DaMita Jo is her most underrated album because she utilized backgrounds so much so for ambience. It’s such a vibe. I feel like she starts with backgrounds before lead... like working out the harmonies influence what she wants to do with lead and adlibs. It also helps that she knows how to play keys bc that’s the best way to iron out intricate harmonies.
Yaers yes!!!!! I was definitely trying to figure out which album is my favorite in terms of background vocals and Damita Jo is easily up there for me! I think Damita Jo and the Velvet Rope are my 1 & 2 (they switch often lol) then the rest. You know I didn’t know she played piano...I just figured this out a couple of days ago smh I’m not surprised though...she’s a Jackson lol

I Love Damita Jo. It's her 3rd best album imo. Behind Velvet Rope and Rhythm Nation.
A lot of the notes she sings are like right next to each other so hearing them isolated sounds odd but together they are extremely complimentary. Like her ear for it is just UNMATCHED.
Jimmy and Terry recently did an interview where they talk about they would look at each other and go why would she choose to sing that note or in that Octave it’s horrible. Then would let her finish doing it all then when they would put it together they would be like “oh my bad she knows what she’s doing”
What's It Gonna Be is on another level.
I believe there was a second background vocalist on that track, aside from Janet.

I didn’t want the video to be too long (it still came out longer than I had hoped) it was on my list at first but I decided to trim my list down a few songs and keep my list around 50 songs. I may have to do a part 2 because I really wanted to include truly and moist so bad 😩

I've always noted that over the years. my personal favorite is what's it gonna be, her song with busta rhymes, that song is always a favorite and janet's harmonies on that song are incredible.

You included all my faves in this video (well except One More Chance lol). Love how you mentioned it being a family trait. That sound is unmistakable. I remember when I first heard their nephew Austin Brown, I was like "yea that's that Jackson blood/sound"

Unlike most harmonies out there that are created just to beef up a melody, Janet’s are angelic and atmospheric. They envelop you sonically.

She's so underrated with her background vocals. I always knew they were there but I did a project some years back and had to break them down and sing them...I was MIND BLOWN. Still never got the hook backgrounds on someone to call my lover..
Edit: I couldn't find any Acapella back then, now I can, which makes it easy to hear now. I had a messed up aux chord that allowed me to hear the backgrounds better

I admit I was aware of Janet but did really *go deep* in her discopraphy til Kaytranada's remix for If in which her harmonies are very noticeable. And I was hooked ever since.
She is **THE** queen of harmonizing, no debate. They are unearthly! Those notes are ear candy, so delicious to the auditory senses I could keep coming back and getting seconds & seconds. That's just how unique & rare she & Michael are. They are the human embodiment of a literal **music-maker** it takes skill, yes, but original creativity to devise them, bring 'em to life & execute it out like a pro.
