Janet Jackson has delivered some of the best background vocals and harmonies in recent memory. This is a needed look into her often overlooked vocal gifts. Enjoy with headphones.
Can’t b good, Funky Big Band, The Body That Loves You, If there are so much that I like! Thank you for this video, she is quite underrated as a singer, I always said that she is a master at this! Hope next will be MJ
I thought I was the only one who paid attention to her background harmonies. I've always said she was the BEST at harmonizing and blending in her songs❤😍omg
This is why I hate when folks trash Janet's vocals. She recorded the majority of these harmonies before the heavy use of autotune, when vocals were recorded to tape. She stood there and recorded each piece to elevate the music! It's interesting the more she starting writing and producing, the more the harmonies jumped out. So many of her harmonies are my favorite, but IF is such a pop classic with those backings. But, her harmonies on her duet with BUSTA always made that song for me.
I think the reason her vocal abilities are so underrated is because no one ever asks her about them. When ppl interview her they are not interested in her background vocals, harmonies and vocal arrangements. If I ever met her I would love to have a convo and master class on how she does what she does best.
i think is the fact that JJ is so true with her music while being so private with her life and that's why ppl are more interesting about her life and trynna pick some of her because she's a little piece of mystere and as she always cute and kind in interviews she just going on whatever they ask about her... That the thing when your music is as personal as Janet and what i love the most about her ...being so professional and that so truly human being
People always think because a person sings loud those are the best singers to me those people are not hearing this lady blend her voice so well its like u are floating on a ocean
Come Back To Me, the harmonies at the beginning are the best. This is my favorite ballad of hers. The harmonies are in the entire song but it's always the beginning of the song that gets you. 😊
I’ve always said Janet’s ear is sick. She may not have a powerful voice but her bgvs are genius. The arrangement and production and mix... but her ear must be siiiiick and probably her greatest asset.... Edit 1yr later: GIRL, JANET.. DAMNIT IF YOU OOOOOH WHA WHA ONE MORE DAMN TIME.... YALL. LETS NOT FORGET TO GIVE IT TO THE GODFATHERS OF PRODUCTION.., MR. LEWIS AND MR JAM... THEY CRAFTED THIS SOUND TOGETHER. JANET BEING THE ARTIST SHE IS... HAS HER OWN SOUND AND I BELIEVE THE THREE OF THEM ARE RESPONSIBLE. 2 notes. 1) Janet has a very wide range. 2) I think all the Jacksons are gifted with amazing ears, pitch and voice control... the best singers hit that note dead in the center. No sliding into it, no scooping...no! Dead in the center. The Jacksons all do that.
I mention Janet.’s bg so much to people who pay attention to the intricacies of singing how amazing Janet.’s bgs are. I think, for that, DaMita Jo is her most underrated album because she utilized backgrounds so much so for ambience. It’s such a vibe. I feel like she starts with backgrounds before lead... like working out the harmonies influence what she wants to do with lead and adlibs. It also helps that she knows how to play keys bc that’s the best way to iron out intricate harmonies.
Yaers yes!!!!! I was definitely trying to figure out which album is my favorite in terms of background vocals and Damita Jo is easily up there for me! I think Damita Jo and the Velvet Rope are my 1 & 2 (they switch often lol) then the rest. You know I didn’t know she played piano...I just figured this out a couple of days ago smh I’m not surprised though...she’s a Jackson lol
I Love Damita Jo. It's her 3rd best album imo. Behind Velvet Rope and Rhythm Nation.

A lot of the notes she sings are like right next to each other so hearing them isolated sounds odd but together they are extremely complimentary. Like her ear for it is just UNMATCHED.
Jimmy and Terry recently did an interview where they talk about they would look at each other and go why would she choose to sing that note or in that Octave it’s horrible. Then would let her finish doing it all then when they would put it together they would be like “oh my bad she knows what she’s doing”
TwoSpiritDivinity Starseed lol there’s so many songs that I left out and truly was one of them. I didn’t want the video to be too long (it still came out longer than I had hoped) it was on my list at first but I decided to trim my list down a few songs and keep my list around 50 songs. I may have to do a part 2 because I really wanted to include truly and moist so bad 😩
people always trash talk janet's vocals, but her voice is so angelic and amazing. and her harmonies are amazing. I've always noted that over the years. my personal favorite is what's it gonna be, her song with busta rhymes, that song is always a favorite and janet's harmonies on that song are incredible.
Alright Janet. I didnt know she did all of this. Her harmonies sound like its ten people in there singing with her. Her harmonies and background vocals up there with Mariah and Brandy. Edit: She's actually better than them and that says alot.
ii Marquise ii ii Marquise ii I Love LOVE this comment! She’s so slept on in this regard smh and a lot of times were so caught up in the production, melody and music that we completely miss that sis is layering and harmonizing the hell out of some vocals. Janet has the type of voice that is flexible to work with, especially singing background harmonies along with her leading vocals. Her artistry in the recording studio is beyond great.
Can't B Good is my favorite acapella of hers. The stacking of her vocals is just pure perfection on that track...not to mention it is just a beautiful song! Janet is a beast!!!!
Also “Accept Me” by Janet 😍🔥 It wasn’t included on the Velvet Rope Album But mannn her vocals Put me in a Trance !! That I’ve added her technique to my music taking the time to perfect my (Background Vocals) !!

They really are talented outside of MJ...he was just extraordinarily talented lol

Oh and some of my most FAVORITE, and I do mean FAVORITE songs from Janet are : Come back to me, uh huh lol, the body that loves you, uh huh lol, can't be good, uh huh lol, miss you much uh huh, Moist, uh huh lol, funny how time flies, lets wait awhile, If , and some of the harmonizing INTRO's. These are just a few that I love. But there's a lot more where that came from, lol. Cant wait to hear the " BLACK DIAMOND " project. As well as other innovative music she and her team creates. They're the best in the business, in my opinion. 😄
If y'all have seen it, go and watch the making of the Unbreakable album. You get to see some of what she does during that short video. I would love to see a whole video of something like that with an album from Janet.
Tyrelle Williams No I didn’t lol my vid got blocked multiple times using moist no matter how much I filtered the background. It hurt my heart and annoyed me I had to cut it out and reupload this lol
Vesta Williams ( Rest In Peace ) & CeCe Peniston do the same techniques as well. I split their audio in some of their songs I listen to alot and was shocked how they were able to blend their vocals with the music
Janet's vocals, harmonies and backgrounds are not to be played with. When you listen to her with headphones on or in a quiet room, she will make you lose your mind.
What’s some of your personal favorite Janet harmonies!?
Can’t b good, Funky Big Band, The Body That Loves You, If there are so much that I like! Thank you for this video, she is quite underrated as a singer, I always said that she is a master at this! Hope next will be MJ

They're the best in the business, in my opinion. 😄
She is the best thing ever lived she unstoppable and she deserves everything in this life time 🎊 🎉 love her so much
bgvs in my need & the body that loves you are unreal. also never really caught the bgvs in special, thanks for this!
If y'all have seen it, go and watch the making of the Unbreakable album. You get to see some of what she does during that short video. I would love to see a whole video of something like that with an album from Janet.
I absolutely love the harmony on that love interlude! I play it over and over.🥰
The harmonies on Roll witchu is heavenly, if you love harmonies you need to listen to that one for sure.
I loooove that song!
Yall forgot "Moist" that song got sime of her best harmonies ever
Tyrelle Williams No I didn’t lol my vid got blocked multiple times using moist no matter how much I filtered the background. It hurt my heart and annoyed me I had to cut it out and reupload this lol
@@dafuture93 damn lol
"Moist" puts me in a trance everytime I turn it on. That and "Warmth"
@@Alan-ug7nl hell yeah
Yea, you should read my posts. There's 3 of them😉🔥🔥🔥.
Vesta Williams ( Rest In Peace ) & CeCe Peniston do the same techniques as well. I split their audio in some of their songs I listen to alot and was shocked how they were able to blend their vocals with the music
Yes! Been saying this for years
My Gawd!!! 🔥🔥🔥💪🏽💯🤎🤎☺️☺️😩😩😩😩😩😩🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹👑👑👑👑👑👑
always flawless!!
my fav recently is Damita Jo in the chorus
Janet has the best harmonies. Brandy is also good.
Janet's vocals, harmonies and backgrounds are not to be played with. When you listen to her with headphones on or in a quiet room, she will make you lose your mind.
Her background harmonies especially on the rhythm nation album was crazy
This was amazing! Thank u 💯
S. Ellis Wicks aw you’re welcome! I’m glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching! ❤️
Headphones in, volume up, Janet serenade. Her harmonies make me want to make babies 🤭
I also would like to add that BLACK EAGLE was bang too. And a few others from that album. Um a REAL fan. 🌟😀
