@@jacksongreene3687 Because im a producer/songwriter/arranger. Vocal arrangement is normally done by the producer. The producer always knows what he wants to happen in a song. Granted she is a talented girl, the harmonies embedded inside the music she wouldn't be able to do!

@@trblmkr5139 I'm just saying. Whitney Houston arranged a lot of her own vocals. If you listen to Discipline, which Jimmy and Terry weren't a part of, those same layered harmonies are there. Janet, Jimmy and Terry were a great team though so I'm sure they brought their own strengths of what they were good at to the table.

Only Janet and Terry are credited for arrangement on Rhythm Nation. For the Janet album Janet is credited as the main producer, Terry as music producer, and Jimmy as music producer, keyboards and his vocals. Jimmy and Terry are credited for vocal arrangement on The Velvet Rope album....I wouldn't listed as a Jam and Lewis creation since this wasn't their signature style before Janet or even seen in their works with other artists.

Anyone that wants to learn how to emotionally deliver a performance needs to study Janet. She may not be the "best" singer, but she is the best at what she does. Pure emotions that you can feel. That is what makes her such a great performer. She makes you believe she is horny; she makes you believe she is in love; she makes you believe she is having fun; she makes you believe that she will cut your throat! Most anyone can sing if they practice, but Janet's delivery is sensual. Thanks for posting this. Going to share this with the singers I coach.

Now range does not define wether somebody is a good singer or not, but I believe Janet has proved time and time again that she knows how to utilize her voice and well. She may not naturally have a strong voice, but that's not her fault. She knows what her voice can and can't do, and at the end of the day she has proved her musicianship

Queen of harmonies and vocal arrangement, periodT. She may not sing like Aretha, Whitney, or Mariah but Janet is still up there with the legends. Pulling vocals off the way she does requires so much skill, precision, control, and impeccable ear for music that I find it preposterous Janet is constantly thought of as lacking in the vocal department. Just because someone has a naturally soft singing voice doesn’t mean their instrument is in some way inferior to stronger ones.
Especially for black women, the stereotype of having to "belt" is just wrong... What about PRECISION?
And she never sounds like she’s trying too hard, it just seems to flow out naturally and soothing as if she just keeps replaying the tracks and adding a bit more each time

Just to remind some of you, janet got a lot of vocal harmony practice with her family, she sang on some of Michael’s earlier songs ( PYT) is one and they all sang with her on her earlier projects and wrote for her, so janet still carries the Jackson sound. I think Jimmy & Terry really nailed the layering of vocals with Janet.

Critics has stated that Janet's soft vocals do not go over well in Concerts because they are too light, but that they do stand out on record. That may be the case in some instances, but she can't help that mostly all of her hits with the exception of Scream and Black Cat where hits with her singing in her natural, lower and mid high vocals...What she does in the studio with harmonies and layering of her voice is undeniably the best in the business. To preserve her voice, I don't think Janet doesn't do higher registered songs, and Diana Ross has stated this about herself that she doesn't sing aggressively or aggressive songs because she wants to preserve her vocals. That's why when you hear Patti, who for decades sang high notes, these days can't get those notes....Janet's background vocals are extraordinarily good because she delivers with so much emotions and knows her strong points in a song or songs. Her voice is so pleasant to the ear that she could do an acapella album with her lead and background vocals without music and it would sell. Her vocals mellow you out so, so if you're in you car or listening with headsets on her voice will take you to the stratosphere thats how mellow she is in her element. And a lot of people forget that Janet learned so much by watching her brothers and dad being in the studio's with them early on and also took what she learned to the studio with Jimmy and Terry....so she's a veteran at what she does...The thing that people hold against Janet and don't give her credit for is her own individuality. When the comparisons to her and MJ and also her being a black female in an industry where men control women, Janet was not that one and so that's why she's isn't given the credit by some and criticized by others....She is the poster child for female empowerment, overcoming all of the critics and naysayers.

Well, Mama Patti's big, massive chest voice lasted well into her 60's tho. And she can still sing HIGH notes thru the mixed voice, at nearly 80.
they said she was capable of singing very close intervals without losing her mind because Jimmy wrote vocals on KEYBOARD which is how her voice becomes another instrument in the song. Im aware of Steely Dan doing similar things with Michael McDonald, very close intervals on harmonies that drive singers up the wall. Somehow these singers could handle it
